So what guitar (or other) instrumentals do you rate highly?

Here are some of my favourites in no special order:

1. Driving South - Jimi Hendrix (Radio One)

Great riff and amazing solo.

2. Lenny - Stevie Ray Vaughan (Texas Flood)

Soulful, beautiful guitar playing.

3. Paris Texas - Ry Cooder (Paris Texas)

Acoustic slide, very minimal but very atmospheric.

4. Sleep Dirt - Frank Zappa (Sleep Dirt)

Unusual, mellow acoustic solo.

5. Call it Sleep - Steve Vai (Flex-able)

Vai at his finest. Better than anything on Passion and Warfare IMHO.

6. Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing - Joe Satriani (Flying in a Blue Dream)

This track is way better than any other on that album. Very original and technically amazing!

7. La Villa Strangiato - Rush (Exit..Stage Left)

Rush instrumentals are often the highlight of their albums and this is one played to perfection.

8. Mediterranean Sundance/Rio Ancho - Al di Meola with Paco De lucia (Friday night in San Fransisco)

Amazing musicianship. This is up there with Spanish Fly in terms of wow how can they play that fast on an acoustic guitar?

I could go on but I'll leave it at that.

I'm particularly fond of the piece he played in "Crossroads"...the one that the Karate Kid played air guitar for....I don't even know if it has a name. On a sidebar...I'm wondering how long Vai had to practice to be able to fuck up that note without stopping to think about it first....

BTW...props on the SRV choice....it's the first one The Ol' Man thought of when I mentioned this thread and asked his opinion.

"Hocus Pocus" by the band Focus, Jan Akkerman on guitar - #1 instrumental.

I also like "Within You/Without You" by Joe Satriani off "Surfin' With The Alien" and am sooo thankful of that guy Cliff Cultreri for signing Satch. If he didn't do that album on his credit card the world of guitar would be a much boring place...

LOL, the Yanks won't have clue mate! That is too funny.

How about, YYZ by Rush, saw them play that last night and the audience, and I mean everyone, sang along to the melody.

That brought a smile to my face.

I saw Rush in the early 80's, when they toured for Signals. I had ordered 2 tickets, 4th row center aisle, to ACDC-Back in Black but didn't recieve them till the day after the show. Called and cussed as only a Jersey Girl raised by a trucker can..they sent ne 4 tickets to Rush. Sold 2 for more than the purchase price of the ACDC tickets, and got to see Rush for free. It was an amazing show. I'd never seen a 3 man band fill a stage so completely. Neil Peart is a Drum God!! His kit is a thing of beauty...jaw-dropping...excellant show!!!
