I have always loved this song from the first time i heard it> It just gives me the feeling that it is talking about me in a way. It is a great song and the band sounds great. I love the solo the best though. It sounds as if the guitar is in pain you know? What are your thoughts?

i feel you. That was the first song that really pulled me in. a lot of bands use that same chord pattern (G, E, C, D.) but not many make it original. that solo is a peice of art too.

my other favorite is Atomic Punk!!!!!!! and Light up the sky...those three (the 3rd being little dreamer,) are the songs i play for my friends who are caught up in the mainstream bullshit. i try to promote the best when they "try" to understand my music.

Well i think it was my dad. He didnt listen to them or anything but i remember him mentioning them one day. Then one day in the car i heard a song come on. I think it was hot for teacher or something. So i found out who they were and thats how i got into them. That was about last year or so

niice. what's your take on the solo stuff? you should see dlr perform on his next tour, if you can

DLRdelight!
08-30-2004, 02:28 PM
If i can i will. Well if your asking me how i do solos, well i dont know. I cant really come up with stuff just doesnt come out. I know i can like sort of solo away and it will flow together not just sound like a whole bunch of crap that doesnt sound right together. Ive been playin 4 abot almost 3 years. If your askin about Eddies. Man that guy is a genius. One of my favorite solos to play right now is the "You're No Good" solo. Kicks ass

Always loved the song and I always will. It had the potential to be a "Runnin' with the Devil" in my book.

Not only the guiter, but Dave's voice is quite expressive in this one as well. He sounds great all the way through, but especially at the end when he says "Little dreamer..." he's got that sadness in his voice.

Yeah, I've always liked Little Dreamer a lot. Was one of my favourites when I first got the album, long ago.

And I agree, it definitely shows off Dave's singing. His overall delivery is great, and his phrasing, timing, tone, and mood are top notch. He really shines on it (it's a good one to shove in the face of "he can't sing at all"-type goofs).

I used to love grooving out on the main chorus riff and verse guitar part when I was a beginning guitarist.

Yeah i know what you mean. That opening riff is just sumthin you can groove off to

Songs like "Little Dreamer" showed us as kids who listened to them a bit of the heavier side to adult life then parents cared to caution us of: in like contrast, could Hagar write a tune like this?

Fact is he didn't. Nor does he even write from reality.. I even doubt he's been Up For Breakfast in the last 2 decades!

Lyricist of this song was a genious and kudos for Dave's inflections on it.. I can't even recall who wrote it. Grate choice.

DLRdelight!
09-23-2004, 11:34 PM
I never paid attention to that, very true. While classic vh wrote about things that really happend or they felt, van hagar just made the bullshit up, very good point

What do you mean? Dave and VH wrote it.

Yeah, I'd have to say that was one of about a half dozen tunes that came across the best the night I saw them last tour.

"Then they went and they voted you...least likely to succeed..." such a great line!

Agree. For me it was the "hidden gem" of the show. I've always loved that song. Mostly just for the sound of the guitar. To me, it is the best example of Eddie's classic tone/crunch/brown sound.

Plus, as a hack guitar player, it's quite easy to play.

Ahh...What the Hell...I'll shamelessly plug my video again from the New Orleans show in Feb 2008...Apologies for the camera and it's annoying auto focus issues...

Just goes to show the best tunes aren't necessarily the most technically complicated...a la Angus Young.

Kick-ass tone and lazy groove...I love how it goes from Roth's "Yeah-Ee_Yeah" into the solo, which is a tasty treat in itself.
It's a ballad, but, it isn't....
Another fine example of 'Halen Harmonies.

I have to say I was very little when I first heard Van Halen. The songs that started it all for me were Runnin' With The Devil, Jump, and Jamie's Cryin'. Funny combination, huh?

You've gotta start somewhere, and those 3 are an interesting cross-section of CVH for sure! For me, it was Panama in 1984.. I was 10 years old and was just blown away with the sound and the swagger of VH... they looked like they sounded! I've never looked back...

Awesome song. Here's a recording I did of it - I even do the singing!! Kinda crap I know but the backing track sounded empty without the vocals. People can dish DLR's vocals but if you ever try and sing like him its impossible! Guys a legend.

at least the harmonies were easy ;)

One of my favorite songs off VH... Love that "lazy groove and tone" he lays down. Same reason I like Drop Dead Legs so much.

Yes, I wouldn't quite say it was a ballad, either...what I dig about it is where it was placed in the running order on the album: following tune after tune of slamming, azz kickin' rock, LD kinda takes the intensity down a notch (sorta like Push Comes To Shove on FW).

I love the song. Granted I love just about ALL of Dave's songs, but this is an awesome ballad and it provides a nice interlude to the rest of the hard rock on the first Van Halen album. You haven't lived until you've heard DLR sing this live under a starry night time sky.

Oh God, Little Dreamer is one of my favourites. I love it, hence the username! :hee: It shows how they don't have to stick to the heavier stuff - Van Halen are so fucking awesome they can pull anything off.
Same goes for Dance The Night Away. I love that one too.
