Yeah, this sucks...you simply would not believe the things I've seen at the supermarket: people buying everything, complete panic.
Home Depot is a nightmare.

The local tv is doing the usual "The Sky Is Falling" routine, with hysterical "reports" of what we are in for, regardless of the fact that NO-ONE, even the National Weather Service, seems to know for certain where this thing is truly headed.

3 windbags in one month: two hurricanes, and a Sammy fronted Van Halen on the 8th.

Me? I'm stocking up on beer and scotch.

...craig:rolleyes:

What worse than not knowing? Ask the people in Punta Gorda.

The satellite view of Charley was twice as bad as this thing and there’s nothing in the way of Frances. They’re practically the same size at this point.

By the way, any looters on the beach areas need to be very careful.

I am still kinda nervous though... it's taking the hurricane Andrew path!
I already lived through Andrew... and would hate to see this happen again!

Set your lineups way ahead just in case.

Not that it's that important, not as important as having everything in tact.

True.

I actually have a waiver claim for Lawton... so it might alter my roster... if I get him... maybe I should just forget him... and update my team for the next week.

The only reason i'm online right now... is because everything is stocked up... batteries... water... food... we just sold our house... and my new place doesn't have SHUTTERS.... but I think we'll manage!

They didn't. They called it Frances. I don't know exactly how this works, so I might have this wrong, but I think what they do is name hurricanes after women's names, alphabetically. So the first hurricane of the season will be named Alice, or Andrea or some name starting with A. The second would be named Barbara or Beulah, or something....etc. Apparently, this is the 6th one, so its name is Frances. Could have just as easily been named Freida, I suppose...I have no idea who decides on the names.

WARF
09-01-2004, 06:47 PM
There is no such thing as basements in Florida. LOL

Right now... it's very calm... hardly any wind at all... sunny 85 degrees... no sign of a hurricane yet.... we should be gettin' the effects sometime later tonight.

WARF

We haven't even been issued a warning yet.

Possibly later tonight.

This is exactly why I wouldn't live in Florida. As much as I hate cold weather, the Mid-Atlantic portion of the US doesn't get any of the extremes--no tornadoes, no earthquakes, no hurricanes, no floods unless you live in Jersey, no 3 months of heavy snow, no droughts, etc.

I wish all of you down there the best.

SoCalChelle
09-01-2004, 06:49 PM
Oh ok, I have no experience with hurricanes, I just figured everyone in the path of them would have a basement to hide in. *embarrassed*

The World Meteorological Organization are responsible for maintaining and updating the list. It featured only women's names up until 1979, when men's names were introduced. The men's names alternate with women's names and are listed in alphabetical order. There are six lists of storm names, and they alternate once every six years. So this year's list will be used again in 2010.

No big deal chelle.

There are plenty of shelters.

As of right now the projected path is around plantation for landfall... which is about 50 miles north of me... I just hope it draft up more north.... perhaps Jacksonville... or even better... have it make no landfall at all!

This is the big hurricane we've been waiting for...

A Big one comes to Florida every 12-13 years.

1966- Betsy
1979- David
1992-Andrew
2004- Frances

Being on the West Coast makes things a little different. The east gets the biggest impact from the storm, and while we're still going to take a hit the storm will have weakened a lot when it comes. Regardless, we're all ready.
Due to the fact that schools on the west are being used for shelters, I just got out of school for tomorrow. Add that w/ the weekend, labor day and a teacher-work day and I've now got myself a 5-day break. Too bad I'll be doing homework the entire time. Fucking IB...

The real stink of it all, though, is the fact that while my buddies are headed to the east for the weekend to catch the swells I'm stuck here w/ a god damned cold. Hopefully I'll get better before the storm hits; you don't see waves like that too often.

Florida-Hurricanes or not, still the best state.

I'm staying.

With gun in hand!!!!

Warf lives right down the street from me.

He probably took off.

The coastline of Palm Beach County and St Lucie are expecting catastrophic damage.

I'm about 5 miles west of the coast.

They will stop selling beer after 8pm tomorow night. From that point on the alcohol restriction will be indefinate.

An 8pm curfew has been established to minimize looting. Indefinately.

St Lucie County, after the hurricane, will require 2 forms of ID to get off any highway there. (looting)

If you don't hear from me in a week assume my computer got damaged.

2 weeks - I'm dead. LOL

Really I'm very worried. More for my home and possessions than for me.

I'll go out into it.

I wen through Andrew - I was actually an insurance agent. The devastation in Homestead (Miami) would make you cry.

I'm rambling.

I'm worried and pretty prepared.

pretty much.

It's a good thing we don't get hurricanes like the ones in the Western Pacific. There was a storm in 1979 (Super Typhoon Tip) that had a central pressure of 872 millibars and winds somewhere between 190 and 210 miles per hour.

Let's get ready to rumble!!!!
Frances is going to be one mean bitch and will cause a lot of damage in most parts of our Sunshine State. Please take all precautions (prescribed medicines, water, gas, food, batteries, clothing, and legal paperwork - insurance, etc.).

Let's prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

8/31/92 Jesus said to Nancy Fowler at Conyers, GA..."Do not fear speaking my words. More hurricanes, more earthquakes, more tornados, more volcanos will erupt, more violent storms will come and great waves will hit the shores of the earth."

In the evening of the same day as Nancy and a roomful of people were praying the Rosary, the blessed Mother said, "My dear little children, time is running out. Time is my Son's gift to you. Please return this gift to My Son through prayer and living holy lives. Many of you are not prepared to greet my Son. Children, please heed these words. Return to God without delay. Help our brothers and sisters. I am crying. You are stubborn and do not listen. More disasters will befall you. One will come after another quickly. I implore you again. Pray, Pray, pray and return to God. Keep His laws sacred. More suffering will befalll you, America. You have wandered far. My Son has sent me to help you. By the grace of God, I am appearing in many places."

The very next day, 9/1/92, a major earthquake under the Pacific Ocean created great waves ( a tsunami) which devastated the coast of Nicaragua. On 9/11 Hurricane Iniki hit the western Hawaiian Islands with winds as strong as Hurricane Andrew 17 days earlier and caused extensive damage.

Jesus replied, " My people shall know I am GOd. I am tired of all this rejection. The world has rejected My Mother. My hand is about to strike and strike it will. Very soon My hand will strike. It will split the earth." On 10/13 "I decended from My throne to shake the earth." The day before an earthquake described as one of the most powerful earthquakes in Egypt's modern history shook Cairo.

This was published as the messages during a period of time by Our Loving Mother's Children Po Box 309 Conyers, Ga.

When Jesus and Mary apperared to Nancy Fowler on her farm. Roads were cut, crowds of 60,000 came. Scientists did tests on Nancy Fowler, and she was propesying in a deep sleep. Jesus appeared and the machines registered 3 3 3. Jesus asked, "Why do you put me to the test?" Mary appeared, it registered 4 4 4 Then Satan appeared and it registered 6 6 6. They dropped their machines and ran with fear. They said, "We are the antichrists, putting our numbers on her head and hands." And believed.

Trees are down everywhere, so we can't leave the apartment complex.

We just had power restored, I truly feel for those without.

Info is scattered pretty poorly, as local tv continues to concentrate on ghastly images, rather than giving out useful information.

Since I'm located just west of Fort Lauderdale, if anyone has any info about what's going on to the north (several friends and family, yet no telephone in many areas and cell phone use is out , too), let me (and all of us) know how you are doing!

All the best, hope you and your's are safe.

Hi, everyone!

First and foremost...

I'd like to thank everyone for the prayers and support...

It's been a long tough road... and it's too long of a story to get into.. but I've been busy feeding the neighbors and giving them water and ice.... because I am one of the lucky ones... who got their electricity back.... there are over 500,000 people in my county alone... who have no electricity... or gasoline... some people don't even have water... all I hope is that lionsfan and pete are okay... have they posted here yet?

Pete lives closers to the water... so i'm guessing he's one of the HALF MILLION Florida residents to not have power... lionsfan lives even more west than me... and probably wasn't hit as hard... but who knows... this storm wasn't as strong as ANDREW... but it was moving WNW at 4 mph... and took almost 3 days to pass us... the flooding was tremendous!

This shit just amazes me how people pull it together during these times....really. But ya know something Warf? It's people like you who pull it together for those that just can't. I am sure you went through your own tunnel of hell, but are there for the others. You should be commended on that. :)

We will hear from Pete and Cubby. You wait and see.....they'll be ok. We have to hope, as we have no other choice.

Well Susie Q...

Tragedies can bring out the BEST or the WORST in us!

I was fortunate enough to live in an area, that regained it's power overnight! I massive tree landed next to my car, only about a 3 feet away.... or I would have lost my car... so I am thankful... and I've been well supplied at my house... so I've been able to help out some people.... with ice ... water etc... you can't help everyone... but if everyone contributed a little.... there wouldn't be these starving people waitin' in lines.... or walking around because there is no gas in there car!

I didn't even know sunya was in Florida.

It's affecting alot more people at this board, than we know about.

People have been electocuted from merely walking across the street... and stepping in a puddle of water! There are elderly people sittin' in their homes without air conditioning.... it's just very scary down here in Florida.

Are people walking in a daze down there? I can't imagine going through that. Believe it or not....wind scares me. Of all things.....we get a 35 mile wind thing going on here, and I am scared shitless.
The most we get here is a snowstorm, which...well...those are not too bad except for the shoveling part, and gettin' to work n' stuff.

It is pure chaos.

I feel guilty just being able to access the internet right now.

I am hoping that the rest of the Florida posters are okay. I live in Southern Palm Beach county... and I was about 30 miles south of where the eye made impact. Vero Beach got hit the worst... because it was on the North East side of the EYE WALL... the north east side produces the most tornadoes and rainfall.

Ah, now we're getting all that rain.

The subway is flooded and service was literally at a standsill for a long while. Shit is slowly getting back to normal. Had an afternoon class tht was canceled because of it. Got an evening class now, and I'm hoping that gets called because it started raining again bad here in Queens. My mother says tha she's making me go anyway. Should be fun trying to get home in one piece.

Back…

Thanks for all the warm fuzzies, everyone. :D

It wasn’t too bad over here. 40-50 mph sustained winds with a few hurricane-force gusts and some rain. I stood outside in my driveway during that and it was awesome. Sunday is when everything started winding down, and that’s when I decided to take a drive around the neighborhood to see what Frances had done. There were leaves everywhere, a few trees had been knocked over, and some street lights were gone. Overall, though, my neighborhood faired pretty well.

There are a few houses here that still have their hurricane shutters up. I wonder why…

My friend posted this in another board I go to --

Normally wouldn't post something like this in it's own thread, but considering a lot of people on the boards, and those who read the boards are from the Carribean or have friends or family in parts of the Carribean, I thought I'd mention it.

As of 2AM AST (same as EST) Hurricane Ivan is a Category 5 Hurricane, the first category 5 cane of the 2004 season. Sustained winds are at 160MPH with gusts estimated up to 200MPH. Although the hurricane is about a week away from the US, it's estimated path takes it right over Jamaica, making landfall in Jamaica sometime Friday night. It will be devastating for Jamaica if it hits as a Cat 5, or even a Cat 4.

This storm is dangerous. Unlike Frances, which had ideal conditions almost the whole way through, but that just couldn't keep together, Ivan has had to deal with some factors which could have weekened it, but it stayed together and grew stronger. The most notable thing in the last 3 hours, has been the pressure drop at the center, from 938mb to 925mb, indicating this storm really blew up in the last few hours. (winds increased by 15 MPH in 3 hours).
Also, from a meteorology standpoint, reconnaisance aircraft have reported frequent lightning around the eyewall, and severe hail. Both conditions are very rare in hurricanes and incated a very potent storm.

Jamaica looks like it's in for, followed by the western part of Cuba. The only way this cane will miss Jamaica is to the west, but since the strongest winds are in the Northeast quadrant of a hurricane, it will still most likely be greatly affected. The biggest thing with Ivan is the rapid intensification it just endured, along with signs that it's not done getting stronger. It's set to move into warmer waters, and then make more of a northern move into the Gulf Of Mexico. This could very well affect Florida come next week.
THis storm really hasn't been hyped up, I think a lot of the reason is because we're still focused on Frances, but as of now, it is a much more dangerous storm.
If you have relatives or friends in Jamaica, hopefully they've already made preparations for the storm, but it is very important they get ready for this storm and take it seriously, as it might very well be the worst storm Jamaica has even seen.
More updates to come!

Actually, he's tracking Tropical Depression 10 in the Atlantic, which formed and dissipated today. I guess he isn't a good enough forecaster to write advisories for Hurricane Ivan. :D

Oh Christ, the agony...the much dreaded Miami Dolphin home opener has been moved a day earlier, to Saturday.

Haven't we suffered enough?

The Dolphin's chances of scoring this year are worse than mine, and I'm married.

I work in a retail store...remember last week? Well...it's back.

Hunker down, Floridians...man: Sam Hagar (Fort Lauderdale Show), the Dolphins and another freakin' hurricane...with all this wind blowing around, no wonder everyone is buying plywood.
