Due to the fact that the forum is dedicated to music, it just seems like allowing .mp3 file attachments would be a great thing to have in the forum! I guess I am wondering why this isn't the case? I think it is most definitely something we would all utilize.

G'day Darling ! :D

This is pretty funny, I could explain this to you in person... :)

I believe we restrict MP3's attachments for several reasons,

Filesize, The average MP3 song (at a reasonable bitrate) is around
3-6 meg in size.Thats substantially more than the 349999 byte
allowable attachment size.
However, I feel that if you have something rare or unique,
(either Dave or Original Van Halen) we could arrange
to have it uploaded into the download section.

Most Website owners are charged for the amount of space their
site occupies, and also the amount of files downloaded, so
I guess if we all uploaded an MP3, it would also put a serious
load on Sarge's bandwidth allowance..

Alternatives ?? Well you can check if your ISP has given you
some webspace with your internet access account. Using
an FTP program, you could upload the MP3 to your webspace,
then post a link here to it... (But please read the next paragraph
before considering this !)

Legalities... Well the RIAA have been handing out lawsuits
left right and centre over copyrighted material recently, and
we could get into a lot of shit from that respect also.

However, I believe non-official releases (boots etc) dont
attract the same scrutiny, and seem acceptable to
freely distribute.

Not having asked Sarge this question personally, Im
guessing some or all of these factors come into play.

Thats my half-educated guess for an answer :p

ILUMF !

If you have something rare or unique for God's sakes don't put it in mp3.
