1988
David Lee Roth releases Skyscraper. David Lee Roth's second fulllength solo album. The album was released in February 1988, beginning a 27-week run on the charts on 2/13/88, reaching U.S. #6 and U.K. #11. Billy Sheehan was at a very low point with this album - it was the beginning of the end of his involvement with the band. He felt it had too many overdubs and that none of the songs were really taken apart and looked at properly, the way a piece of music should be. Both ""Just Like Paradise"" and ""Stand Up"" featured sequenced, synthesized bass lines. All of the songs were planned to be played slightly faster on the supporting tour. The day Sheehan left the band, he, Brett Tuggle, Pat Torpey, and an unknown guitarist went into the studio to lay down background vocals at a faster tempo, with Tuggle later loading them into a sampler. So, even though Sheehan was no longer in the band when the tour rolled around, he was still providing background vocals, albeit in a digital capacity. As part of a promotional gig for the album, Dave scaled a plaster mountainside erected atop Tower Records in West Hollywood, CA. Drummer Greg Bissonette's brother, Matt, stepped in to replace Sheehan for the accompanying tour. ""Damn Good"" features Billy Sheehan on fretless bass. ""Hot Dog and a Shake"" came about after hearing Dave wisecrack, ""Hey baby, can I get a hot dog to go along with that shake?""
After Sheehan left the band, he planned on starting a band with Steve Stevens. That fell through for unknown reasons, and Sheehan went on to form Mr. Big with Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin, and Pat Torpey. Tracks: • Knucklebones • Just Like • The Bottom Line • Skyscraper • Damn Good • Hot Dog and a Shake • Stand Up • Hina • Perfect Timing • Two Fools a Minute. The Australian release also includes ""California Girls"" and ""Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody."" The mountain-climbing sequences in the video for the song ""Just Like Paradise"" were filmed at Yosemite National Park's Half Dome. The only other video made for this album was ""Stand Up.""
