1983
Van Halen plays the US Festival at San Bernardino, CA. Van Halen received an upfront sum of $1,500,000 to headline the 1983 US Festival, which got the band in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest-paid single performance. Van Halen headlined ""Heavy Metal Day"", which consisted of the following bands (in order of appearance): Quiet Riot, Mφtley Crόe, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, Van Halen. This was a music festival held on 5/28/83 through 5/30/83 at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino, CA, that is often referred to as the ""Disgust Festival."" Van Halen performed on ""Heavy Metal Day"" (5/29/83) as headliners for the record-setting fee of $1.5 million. Originally that amount was to be paid to David Bowie, with Van Halen getting only $1 million, but their contract stated that their fee must equal or exceed that of the other highest paid group at the show. So Van Halen ended up with the bigger amount. The 1984 Guiness Book of World Records created a new category based upon the price of this performance. The band's own expenses for the show totaled around $500,000, which included a full line of merchandise for fans attending the event. The performance began with a 3-minute peek at Van Halen backstage just
prior to the show and was broadcast on a big-screen monitor placed high above the stage. It fades in to a giant party, hosted by Los Angeles disc jockey Paraquat Kelly. Kelly wanders throughout the ruckus, which includes revelers of all ages, a midget leading a saddled sheep around, a nurse, bodyguards, photographers, and several scantily-clad women. Each of the band members is interviewed for several moments with the highlight being Kelly ""accidentally"" walking in on David Lee Roth and a female fan in a comprising position on a piano in a room known as the Love Dungeon. An announcement is made just seconds prior to show time as the band and fellow partygoers gather for a final toast in which Dave dedicates his bottle of whiskey to ""alcoholics unanimously."" The band kicked off the show with ""Romeo Delight,"" and it soon became apparent that the band had perhaps had a bit too much to drink before the show. Dave mumbled the words to the first two songs and invented an entirely new set of lyrics to ""The Full Bug."" It wasn't the best Van Halen performance, but it was a wild performance that has earned a place alongside the best Van Halen videos on collectors' shelves. The set list: Romeo Delight Unchained Drum Solo The Full Bug Runnin' with the Devil Jamie's Cryin' So This Is Love? Little Guitars Bass Solo Dancing in the Street Somebody Get Me a Doctor/Girl Gone Bad/I'm So Glad Dance the Night Away Cathedral Secrets Dave's Tai Chi Solo Everybody Wants Some!! Ice Cream Man Intruder (Oh) Pretty Woman Guitar Solo Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love Growth Bottom's Up You Really Got Me/Happy Trails. Four of the songs performed were included in a special Showtime presentation of the three-day event: ""Runnin' with the Devil,"" ""(Oh) Pretty Woman,"" ""You Really Got Me,"" and ""Happy Trails."" The film was done by Pacific Video and was produced by Robert Lombard and Noel Monk. Donn Landee was in charge of the audio. All three tunes were touched up with numerous vocal overdubs prior to being shown. Two deaths occurred on Heavy Metal Day.
