That's a bit of a stretch, since this pension system started something like 45 years ago, when the costs where nowhere what they are now.

The truth is, if your going to make a huge obligation like that (ala Social Security) the money should be assured to be set aside. In this case, as in other where they got screwed (was it Northwest Airlines a few years back), they did not. If you want a rule, that should be it.

Well, the health care was actually in the federal budget way back in 1947. President Truman was trying to set it up here around the same time most of the other countries were doing it, but (as usual) the Repuke Congress got in the way. In fact the German & Japanese systems were set up by the occupational post war governments, and based on what was supposed to be deployed here.

Very true...

We should also add that the fact that the Japanese gov't takes care of much of their workers' health care has also been a significant factor in their profitability over American brands...
