SS Guitars

Alright, so, my friend Keith from school owns an original production run SS solidbody guitar from the late 80's or early 90's. He's going to trade it to me for my hardtail Washburn Idol and some cash, not much. The thing is a cross between an SG and a Strat, he says. It's red in color and has hot-rodded EMG humbuckers in it. It also features a double-locking Floyd Rose whammy bar... And a 22 fret rosewood neck. I don't currently have a picture of it, but the guitar seems sick. What I was wondering was, does anyone know ANYTHING about the guitar/s i'm talking about? If so, thanks, because i've looked around quite a bit for anything on them.

If you can get me a shot of the neck pocket and heel (if its a bolt-on) I may be able to identify the factory for you.

Never heard of SS though.

You know, Kramer was mostly an importer of Japan- and Korean-made guitar parts assembled in the US.. I know one or two guys actually had some skilz there, even if they weren't utilized to make an entire guitar.

I'm glad Kramer is out of business.

All I know is that it's a 22-fret rosewood neck with a Kramer-esque banana headstock that trims down to a point. Then, it's bolt-on with four screws into the body. He doesn't have a means of taking pictures with it, but it doesn't have any strings on it so he thought about bringing the neck into school. If so, i'll take pictures... But once I physically get the guitar, I will take more pictures.

Odd name for a company.

Why not Gestapo Guitars, it has more of a ring to it.

I've seen one or two. It's worth about $50 and I doubt a pawn shop would even give you that...

buy a good Korean guitar like an Agile or something. I wouldn't trade a Washburn for it. Especially not an older Washburn...

They're supposedly rare, i'll have to see tomorrow when Keith brings it in to school (neck and all, disassembled). But, the Washburn isn't anything special, just a hardtail Lyon Washburn Idol (Think of it like a Starcaster Strat). It's not very old, but hey, he wants to trade...

@Sesh
My mistake, it's S/S guitars, not SS. Sorry.

The shittiest guitar I ever owned was a Kramer. I also think the guy that ran it was an opportunistic asshole more into selling the hype than any kind of quality. I think he kissed Eddie's ass and took advantage of the relationship.

Are you bashing American made Kramers, or the Asian made ones?

Better yet, why are you flaming in MY thread? Haha. I posted this thread to see if anyone knew anything about what I was discussing.

Well, it is not exactly 'flaming' to talk smack about someone who is not even a member of this site.

I was never impressed by Kramers.

But to each his own.

The Kramer Voyager I had in high school was American-made, and had funky electronic issues from the factory, but except for having a neck like a baseball bat was otherwise OK...a couple of my friends had Barrettas, and while some played well, they always looked like melted wannabe Charvel/Jackson Strats to me...

Haven't been knocked out by the current Gibson/MusicYo/Whatever - Kramer offerings of late, either..

But I've never seen an SS.

Yes, I think I said that. It's a nice guitar for the price and brand name, two really good humbuckers, a heavy body, glossy black finish, and a nice rosewood neck. But i'm getting older and want better guitars...

Well, I thought about it, and I seem to think that the S/S is better...

S/S Guitar
-22 Fret rosewood neck
-Hot-rodded high gain EMG pickups in neck and bridge pos.
-Double-locking Floyd Rose trem
-Glossy red finish
-Volume and tone control
-"Super-Strat" body design
-Banana headstock that crosses between a Kramer and a Jackson
-3 way pickup switch
-Low action

And, my Lyon Washburn Idol
-22 Fret rosewood neck
-2 no-name humbuckers
-Hardtail string-through design
-Glossy black finish
-VCC Tone control (Blends humbucker sounds into single coils)
-Weird body design (Looks like an SG, a Tele, and Les Paul had babies)
-Arch-top headstock
-3 way selector switch
-Unfixable high action :/

In my opinion, the S/S sounds better... Keith says it plays and sounds like a beast.

That's my attempt at a Frankenstrat given the limited resources I had at the time.

I took a knock-off Stratocaster with a rosewood neck and Kramer-style "beak" headstock and striped it up with electrical tape. It's pretty lame how the transformation was made but it turns some heads when I bring it into school.

No dude, I just don't want to sound like an a**hole!

I respect anyone who picks up an instrument and I really do like to be helpful...

That is always good, I respect that. Some people are really just douchebags about it. If you're better than them or worse then them, they insult you either way, it's like Catch-22. I'm certainly not the best but I have some really good guitar gear, better than most people. If you wanted, I could list my gear in another thread. But this one's for my Showster S/S guitar.

I found out that my guitar was made in the late 80's or early 90's, is American made, and i've noticed it has a serial number on the backplate. Next to the traditional pickup switch, it has a much smaller two-way switch, which I am not sure what it does.

I will post pictures very soon. And I need a high E string, haha.

Well, i'm certainly going to keep it, at this point. I spent far too long restringing it anyway.

But yeah, it's a kickass guitar, here's some pictures. If you wanted any more, let me know.

Not too shabby, looks like an Ibanez S series.

How does it play/sound ?

You kidding? The thing is a fucking beast. It's got great resonance and sustain, it holds notes out really good. I really like the harmonic response on it as well. I was surprised at how easily and loudly I could do squealies on it.

I like it. Nicer than I imagined...and if it's really made in USA...

Does it say where it's made ??

Looks like Japan, but either way, and you like it...

I like red, but clean up those rusty screws...

I'm going to replace the screws eventually. And i'm certain it's made in America, i've scoured around the guitar.

hey, Japanese guitars are great, and those silverish dots on the fretboard are indicative of a MIJ guitar...even Japanese Strats usually have those unless it's a Craft Shop model...

Wow. Even Gar could not get up the balls to post pics of his cardboard Charvel and his imaginary amps.

Kudos to you dude. I did not start playing electric until I was 16.
