Smile Info Needed On New VH Album . . .

. . . now that it's official that vh is working on an album have any details surfaced about who's producing, engineering, etc?

. . . glen ballard seems like an obvious choice to produce, really loved me wise magic; and the p.o.d. recording rocks . . .

. . . btw, whatever happened to diamonddavidleeroth.com?

Glen Ballard is a douchebag. He and Steven Tyler tried to turn Aerosmith into the Alanis Morrisette band. The only way I'll buy it is if they get Mike, Ted and Don back.

Miss your meds again, Katie?

The obvious choice for a producer would be Ted Templeman. He made 6 great albums with this band, and is principally (if not literally) the 5th member of Van Halen.

If that is impossible, then the best possible choice would be Rick Rubin. That guy gets the best possible sound out of anybody he works with. Rock, Country, Metal, Rap, whatever.

For producer I would say Templeman or Brendan O'Brien (who kinda made Brian Johnson sound like Brian Johnson again).

The whole experience would be ruined for me. Even if they wrote great songs I would resent it because of Mike's absence. Senile 'ol Ed, I do wish he'd get his marbles back or atleast learn to be an adult before he dies.

Unfortunately I think Eddie is gonna produce it all by hymself, that means the whole concept is gonna taste a little VH III.-
I guess there´ll be some weird tunes, some a´la Police and maybe one or two jewels like the old days. There´ll be tons of promotion but the whole thing won´t fill the right shoes. It will be completly acceptable for AOR people but it will feel halfass for real VH fans. I hope I´m wrong but...( sad but true)

He should go down the FUCKING STREET to Henson's on La Brea.

They got the biggest bestest room for a real Van Halen album, Studio A. Those drums would sound NUTS in that place!

I need. The fuck-eeeng DRUMS. To sound. Like fuck-eeng DRUMS on a VH album. And not like they was done in a garage - Ed's converted .. uhps, scuse me, "studio".

Man, 5150 isn't and never was big enough to do Van Halen drums and vocals. If he uses those vh3 buzzbox amps to record with, that's another ding.. don't want that either.

As far as producing, anyone good with bouncing digital to tape and back again so we can get some good old analogue tape saturation with Roth vocals and drums.

I don't think EWS would sound the same digital and the new stuff should have the best in the world available engineeringwise..

I am in the minority.

I really liked the songs...hate the sound quality.

I hate the clipping....the distorted sound.

I can not listen to Death Magnetic with headphones.

If they used an outside producer then Brendan O'Brien was the guy I was thinking of too, he has sold say 5 millions+ units with AC/DC so he may turn VH down as that is only going to shift 200,000 on a very good day.

Because ED will be in charge of promotion, which means that he and only HE will give interviews to promote it, and as we all know that guy brings an end to happy hour.

There will be no Dave interviews/stories, which will be a shame as Dave is always good copy for a journalist, Ed is not...

Wow. It never even crossed my mind that Eddie might record the bass tracks on any new recordings & just have Wolf play them live. I guess I've been distracted lately. But Eddie is good on bass. In fact, wasn't he credited as the bass player for Sammy on the album Sam put out after OU812? Or maybe it was before OU812...fuck, I don't know exactly. The untitled one that had Eagles Fly on it.

As Winston Wolf so eloquently put it in Pulp Fiction, "Let's not start suckin each other's dicks just yet" Let them get in to the studio first. A record or distribution deal wouldn't be a bad idea either. IF they record, I'm sure Ed will be handling bass duties. Ed & Dave should produce.

. . . rick rubin -- when he was in his stripped-down prime back in the '80s maybe. his stuff seems kind of mellow now. maybe that would work for van halen?

. . . o'brien's an interesting choice, that is if he could produce a whole album, not just one choice hit single (rock 'n' roll train ) and an hour's worth of filler. that's not entirely fair, there are some very cool "experiments" and hints and suggestions on ac/dc's black ice. perhaps we'd be grateful for another hit single and a hit single only from van halen. could you imagine? david lee roth back on the charts and radio with a hit song? when's the last time that happened? your filthy little mouth? did slam dunk chart?

. . . i agree, it is sad that anthony's not on board for the reunion . . .

. . . wawazat! could do it and it would be magnificent of course . . .

I don't think EWS would sound the same digital and the new stuff should have the best in the world available engineeringwise..
I agree...

The first five albums were recorded on an old 50's or 60's era tube console in a real studio with a real engineer and producer...

1984 was done in Ed's garage...err "studio" with the same guitar amp he used on every album and sounds thin to me...It sounds ok (because it was done on tape) but lacks the warm, heavy sound of everything prior...even Diver Down...

But I would take Rick Rubin over Deadwad trying to do it himself...

It's a bit premature to be counting on a new VH album just yet... few things need to get out of the way first.

Honeymoon... didn't Ed mention they were traveling all over the globe. August may be too early to even consider ground work being laid out... That old fuck Ed will need to rest after all that moonin... Maybe he'll find a "round-to-it" after the first of the year. Remember we're dealing with Van Halen time... not real time.

Distribution won't be an issue as Azoff will have an exclusive WalMart deal in hand. But something tells me that WB may have some loose strings attached... even though publically they parted ways in 2002... They own the whole VH catalog distribution still. There was an option for another full album following III. They had their hooks in BOBW... It would figure they'd want a piece of a new VH album, especially with Dave singing.

There ain't a snowball's chance in hell that anything will be recorded outside of the 5150 bat cave. It's evident it would be advantagious in so many ways... but Ed won't come off of Howdy Doody Mountain for anything. There in lies the producer problem... lot of good names kicked around but it's going to be hard to find the "right" fit for Ed and also someone to "make it work" with Dave.

Wolfie will play the recorded bass... that Ed tells him. Look for some silly shit to emerge... that number one genious son is credited with. He'll probably invent some new fangled slap bass, two handed dick wanking to showcase the kid's virtuoso elements...

I wouldn't be surprised if Ed did it which would suck; I'd much rather prefer Brendan O'Brien who's done great work with STP, Velvet Revolver, AC/DC and is working with Aerosmith on their "new" album.

There's so much shit that VH needs to do to get with the times, the stuff that happens in the studio is the tip of the iceberg...

For instance...

Can't blame Starks for the black hole that could suck start a Harley on the net with the VH official site...

He's been hog-tied ever since Ed & Al got pissed off reading the truth and real opinions from the fans when they hosted the Pleasure Dome. We'll all be in a virtual net time-out until Ed gets over that bullshit... if ever...

. . . the ballbreaker album rubin did for ac/dc was awesome mind you . . .

. . . ed van halen would be a difficult choice as producer -- just listen to vh III or the solo album he did with sammy. i know mike post produced III but what does that mean anyway? the recordings were not horrible of course but producing isn't ed's forte . . .

. . . as far 1984 sounding thin -- HOLY SMOKES!!! are you serious dude? throw it on and have a listen, you won't need to get too deep, just listen to the depth and punch on jump alone. that's thin? diver down is known for having a thinish sound comparitively speaking but 1984 cannot be detracted from. period. if you wanna talk thin take a listen to dokken's tooth and nail and you'll hear what thin is. brittle sounding cd . . .

. . . if you think 1984 is thin then you are THICK!

Assuming that we'll get a new album (which I doubt), if Ted can't produce it my pick would be Matt Hyde - his work with Monster Magnet is exceptional, and I really think he'd capture the raw, spontaneous vibe of CVH....

O'Brien can't record guitars.......
