Bruce Dickinson flies in dogfight before sonisphere show

    Bruce is one groovy fucker

Before taking the Sonisphere stage to end Iron Maiden's 'Maiden England' tour, vocalist Bruce Dickinson took part in a WWI airshow above the festival grounds.

I wonder if his Fokker has a real rotary engine in it? You can use the torque of the engine to turn the plane fast. There is no throttle. The engine runs at full speed all the time and you just cut off the ignition. They were really holding back but understandable. The planes are expensive and you just can get people killed flying like they really did. Howard Hughes lost experienced pilots filming Hells Angels. It would be fun to see them pull the stops out and get into some serious Immelman and Spit S manuvers. I once read the life expectancy of a World War I fighter pilot was nine days.

Of all the swaggy British rock front men, he's certainly nailing it, ay?

And you know when you buy a Maiden ticket, you're gonna get a kick arse show.
            Respect. (Ali G's voice).

They certainly had some piss and fire to them. I haven't followed up on the band over the years but it looks like they are still pulling it off.

This was the engine the Germans copied. I got to see a jug out of one of them and I was amazed at how thin the cylinder walls were. These engines were state of the art for the time. It shows human nature. Just about a decade past the Wright Brothers first flight and people were putting guns and bombs on airplanes. I hate to say it but war was the catalyst that motivated and propelled aviation technology. Things have not changed. Our best engineers and scientists work for defense contractors.

He flies the big stuff too. Get an airliner too slow on final approach and they just fall out of the sky. Don't fly by the numbers on these and you are dead. Old Fokkers are more forgiving. It's not that flying is safe. It's that the people behind the controls are highly trained. Flying is dangerous.
