Here We Go Again with Rumors . . . . Van Halen RUMORED to have new songs and to tour

If this has already been posted I apologize!

It appears that the mighty Van Halen may soon be back in action as a post yesterday from the vhlinks.com website’s “Forum Frontman” Fudd indicates that Van Halen are recording new music at guitarist Eddie Van Halen‘s 5150 studio and that they may be touring with Michael Anthony for a 40th year anniversary tour.

The following are excerpts from Fudd‘s post on vhlinks.com on December 21, 2016 at 7:22 pm:

“Ok guys. Was waiting on some more info and here’s what I got:

New music has BEEN recorded. It started over a few years ago and continues to this day. The photo of Dave at the cigar shop was very telling. Almost like a plant if you get me. They are recording at 5150 and that Dave and Ed are working together in harmony doing all new material. There is no animosity. Everyone is getting along. A lot of the “fights” and “hate” is extremely exaggerated. Wolf is the bass player for these sessions.

There is a box set/compilation set coming. The Sammy albums are being remastered. That I know. What extra material that is available is sketchy. Ed has the masters of the Sammyalbums. It will be done and distributed by Warner Brothers.


Wolf‘s album is slated to drop in spring of this year. Wolf wants to spread his wings so don’t expect him to be in the band much longer. Wolf is solely responsible for almost everything that has happened. Dave likes Wolf and they get along.

Van Halen will tour in 2018. Mike has been in contact with the band to be back in for 40th anniversary tour. Also, Sammyis not totally out of the picture but I don’t have a lot on that aspect of this equation. This will more than likely be the last we hear from the band. Wolf will be opening.

It was also stated that Brett and some others over there have quashed the rumor and say they've heard nothing with their sources close to the band. The posted artwork is also just reprints of old Soviet era prewar artwork with VH logos superimposed. The rumor sounds too far fetched to me, there would have more loose-lips if it were totally true methinks. I do think it's possible Ed is working on stuff - perhaps an anniversary box set..

It wouldn't surprise me if Van Halen finally reunites in the next 12 months with the CVH lineup. Or the Van Hagar lineup. Or some combination of the two.

It wouldn't surprise me if the band never does anything - far as recording new music or touring goes - again...ever.

I'd tend to think some type of box set with perhaps some new tracks thrown in would be a more reasonable expectation. As to what eras would comprise said hypothetical box set, who knows?

I mean, it'd be neat if Van Halen recorded a full-length album of new material with the CVH lineup, then hit the road. Don't get me wrong: if the band want to do that, I'm all for it.

Sooner would be better than later from where I sit. I can't honestly say that even if the CVH lineup does these things I'll go see a show. Mostly because they waited too long: Dave's voice is shot far as live work goes. He's just all done. Not a putdown or a slam against Dave, it's just the way it is. I wish it wasn't that way.

Good luck to 'em whatever happens, and whatever they do decide to undertake, my only hope would be that it is at the very least well-rehearsed and sounds decent for the fans who are willing to pay to see/hear it. Myself, I got no interest in spending money to repurchase old material AGAIN, even if just for a few new tracks. I've bought that CVH catalog in so many different forms - from vinyl to cassette to cd - that...it's just enough., you know?

Doing something... in terms of releasing new or old material would cost someone some upfront money in terms of recording, producing and distributing the music. There's a wide range of options today from really cheap do-it-yourself and upload it to the net to the full blown record label produced box-set. My guess is the band is too lazy to go the cheap route and put out a couple thousand dollars of their own to hire some kid to produce it... on the flip side... no record label is willing to invest in a big production/distribution because there's no money in it.

Touring requires someone to promote it... I imagine a limited tour could be possible and there's promoters that would take the risk. But... the band may have to settle for a far smaller guaranteed paycheck than past ventures which I suspect isn't enough to get the 3 senior members off their respective couches/asses...

Bottom line... I think Ed and Al are not motivated to do anything that's outside of something that fits the old big record label business model. In simple terms, someone else does all the work and they show up play music and collect a huge paycheck. Roth used to be motivated enough to do the solo artist/tribute to his former fame barn/casino tours and small label record releases... but Dave used to be far motivated and loved to perform than he appears to be today...

Looking at who's left alive and able to perform music from Rock's 70's/80's hay-day... You'd figure these guys might be up to celebrating their 40th anniversary. There's millions of fans around the world that would celebrate with them in whatever they could muster up. Maybe just waking up another day and dragging their pampered asses out of bed is all the celebration they have left in em...

A tour would be good but if Spammy is involved that is a deal breaker.
Sad to say I just couldn't bring myself to see Van Halen at Hollywood Bowl even knowing it may be their last ever gigs with DLR.
Having seen them on every tour starting with VH II thru 5150 (+ reunion tour) it's hard to reconcile what is with what was.

That seems the most logical explanation for how they operate from a business perspective... plus, no "active" management leaves them leaderless.

I'll add... Back around 1999/2000 Van Halen were early pioneers in Rock bands using the internet to promote themselves and interact with their fans. As much as we've ragged on Brad Starks and the antics of van-halen.com and the Pleasure Dome fan board... that site was very extensive in content and one of the first big-name bands to use that medium in the early days of the net.

Unfortunately... combine Ed's divorce/cancer/substance abuse debacles at the time and us... the fans on the net... and the shear madness we generated during those early years... I think we scared the hell out of the band to the point that they wanted to build a mote, raise some electric fences and stay as far away from us crazy-assed, rabid motherfuckers as possible!! This is why we can't have nice things... LOL!

Well, while others may have belittled Van Halen's official website/officially sanctioned fan board and those who ran them, I came to the conclusion fairly early on that none of the official Van Halen internet stuff was worth spending any time looking at, much less getting angry over. Mostly because the official sites were just putting out the bland band pr pablum in the late 1990s when Cherone was in the band, and then after Cherone left where there was years of nothing. No updates. No news. Zip. Nada.

I'd tend to imagine the band would want to stay removed from fan-based sites, because the criticisms of the group on those sites probably weren't something the Van Halens were even interested in hearing about, much less attaching their names to. However, what would it be worth to be a member of such a site and have the Van Halens or Roth involved if that meant you had to adhere to the principle that every time the Van Halens or Roth farted it was incumbent upon the membership to say those farts smelled like roses?

I think Dave kind of got it in terms of what the internet could be with his late 1990s Dave TV broadcasts, and later in the early 2000s putting out the odd No Holds Bar-B-Que clip online on his site. That the internet could be a way for him to get his stuff across to his audience despite not having major label backing or support. Sadly, Roth didn't follow up on these things and let his own site lapse into the same lame fodder Van Halen did theirs.
