Not sure what to think of this interview, is Sam blowing things out of proportion or are Ed and Al being unreasonable. Neither is out of character for either camp.

Okay, so I fought off sleep and listened to the relevant 5 minutes of the interview.
Hagar claims his version of Van Halen sold "40 to 47 million records" (?!).
Trunk claims that for a certain generation/age of Van Halen fan, the Van Hagar material was just as iconic as anything CVH ever did.
Hagar states that he and Mike Anthony have separate publishing / a separate publishing entity than the Van Halens. So, basically, if Hagar wants to go on television and play Van Hagar material that is to be broadcasted, he needs to get the Van Halens publishing to sign off on it. I'm assuming that with any current live releases of that material Sammy undertakes, he has to both notify and pay Van Halens publishing. As to if Van Halen have any actual legal basis or standing to prohibit Hagar from performing the material...not really, although they can slap him with a lawsuit anyway just to fuck with him.
Hagar then says that "for whatever reasons" Van Halen currently isn't playing Van Hagar material live, so it's up to Sammy to represent that era of Van Halen live. Which is fair enough in the sense that were one (for whatever reasons) to go see Sammy Hagar live, you'd certainly expect him to play a few Sam Halen songs.
I can't imagine why anybody would WANT to hear the Van Hagar cheese ballads live in 2015, but Spam co-wrote them with Eddie, so he's got every right to sing them, if he wants to. Obviously Eddie doesn't ever want to play that cheesy shit again. Maybe the material truly embarrasses him now, and maybe it should? But that really doesn't equal him being able to legally keep the Ched "rocker" from singing them.
Now him and Sobolewski playing Van HALEN songs... that's entirely another matter. Yes, Mikey gets a publishing credit on most of those songs (dunno if his name is on the most current release of the 1984 album. It wasn't on the last one) but does anybody REALLY believe he had any actual involvement in writing them?
I forgot about that part.
If Sam always hated to play songs from the original Van Halen albums, then he shouldn't bother playing them now.

Doesn't matter how Spam explains his awesome abilities and how wonderful he is; to the camera, once again or how many albums he sold with Van Halen, once again.
He is the single most uninteresting person who ever told a story about himself over and over again.
Instead of being interesting he explains to the viewer, "about why you" should view him as interesting.
His lyrics with VH are so singular in their appeal they do not play in any other context, forgettable and without merit in any other time.
The lyrics are very trendy ...none worth hearing again and again...as uninteresting as he is.
I singularly hail ED as the driving force of why any Hagar VH sold anything...with DLR in VH it sounds like a group a band...with VH Hagar...... the listener is only hearing ED's majesty.
A lot of this constant bickering can be fixed to a large extent if a name change really did take place to note the obvious, they are two totally different incarnations of the band. Remaster the Hagar year LPs for the fans that appreciate that style of AOR music and change the band name to Van Hagar on those LPs. They are different bands not only from the voice but to the compositional approach and style of music, and if Warner Brothers would allow it now, it should happen. I guess if Roth would have been the ego maniac some observers claim him to be, he should have named the band Roth N Halen in the beginning instead of suggesting Van Halen, then the significant contributions of him and Hagar could be respected and stand on their own removed from the constant changes of those who happen to share the last name with the band's name. Those songs where not written soley by Edward and Al, the lyrics and placement of melodies (and to an extent the melodies themselves) where done by Dave or Sam. The arguing is being fueled simply by a name which does not share the same content in different incarnations held onto by the guitarist... and I doubt seriously Roth or Hagar joined a band thinking it meant they where part of a Edward Van Halen solo project as just accessories when their contributions went far past that assumption in my opinion

My point is that Dave is not down to earth but if you have relatively a notion of art and culture on a more refined level he will give you the time of day and some and if you are a ignorant fuck and know nothing about culture he would probably give you the traditional bozzy bozzy bop character routine of one liners. Sam has the cultural makeup of your local plumber, so the 'red' politician seems to appeal to the hayseeds of Missouri with ease and your average pot head.
