Interesting take on it... somewhat believable...
Reaffirms some of what I thought/guessed back then, which is that Wolfgang was the one among the Van Halens who initiated bringing Roth back into the band and that Ed was basically playing because he enjoyed playing with Wolfgang...that had it all been left up to Eddie and Wolfgang wasn't brought into the band, a Roth reunion wouldn't have necessarily happened when it did. I think Wolfgang was a positive choice, despite how freak-show he looked onstage during that first Roth Reunion tour, in that it facilitated getting Roth back and probably helped get Ed in a frame of mind to attempt to get sober and active.
Although I think the band would have gotten back with Dave eventually, Wolfgang or not, if Ed and Al wanted to play in arenas again. After the Cherone stint and the 2004 tour, no promoter was going to pay substantial guarantees for a Van Halen that didn't have Dave in it.
I’ve said it a Brazilian times , without wolf ed never tours again or gets any further than practice with al in his little comfort blanket and probably drinks himself to death covered in porn wives.

In the end, it wasn't a bad thing. His enjoyment of playing with his kid got Ed out of his downward spiral, got him out of his bunker mentality and got him back on the road. Not too far-fetched to say it probably added some years on to his life Ed might not have had left to his own devices and inclinations.

Point of fact, for all the weaknesses of it (1/2 old reworked demos, 1/2 of the new material not particularly strong), when one considers Ed's own output post-1996 - as well as Roth's - ADKOT ended up being much better than I thought the band were capable of by the time 2012 rolled around.Quote:

I seem to recall Ed doing a telephone interview on Stern in 2006, just after it was confirmed Wolfgang was to be the new bass player, and Ed also had a whatever attitude about Roth rejoining on the phone. Then again, in 2006, Ed looked to be in pretty dreadful shape so little in terms of erratic behavior should be surprising.
It came off to me that Roth and the Van Halens enjoyed playing with each other on the first reunion tour. I have no real idea what it was like offstage, but I get the feeling that Roth and Eddie can tolerate one another offstage for only so long, and apparently it was that way going as far back as the early 1980s. That it wouldn't be surprising that Roth and Eddie don't share dressing rooms and don't see much of one another when they're offstage or not working. Roth and Ed never gave off a vibe of being a couple of guys who were best buds and hung out together much anyway. But I didn't get a sense on that first reunion tour that Roth and Eddie weren't enjoying playing together again.

What do you figure royalties for the entire Van Halen catalog generate today..? I don't think EVH is worth that much. Who knows how much EVH Gear brings in. Ed has a large estate in the Hollywood hills and a house in Malibu. The taxes alone are substantial and maintenance and insurance aren't cheap either. You are right also. Janie will be the inheritor of the wealth unless Eddie has specified something in his will which who knows if Eddie cares about such things. Wolfie could be kicked to the curb. I've seen it. I've seen kids of wealthy parents party on dad's money and when the parents are gone they fight over the inheritance. They often burn through whatever money they get quick and end up being druggies. I even saw one such person suicide themselves when the money is gone. So yeah Wolf would be smart to educate himself with his dad's money. Who knows how smart he really is. You don't get into the good schools without good grades and high test scores. But Wolfgang has nothing to sell music wise, plus that industry isn't what it was. He's not some hot looking DJ who is going to be in demand at clubs all over the world. If anything Wolfie has the means to start his own business.
