Ex manager says 'Axl Rose ‘Disgusted’ By David Lee Roth'

Notice that the headline here assumes this story is completely accurately reported, the memory of a single guy in a bar 30 years ago. Also in the same interview the same guy relates at length how Axl fell out with Slash over his collaboration with Michael Jackson because of the pedophilia allegation against him. A simple check of the dates show that those allegations were two years later so I'm not sure about this guys memory. Also context is everything, Roth maybe sees a distraught Axl and tries to tell him it wasn't his fault (inquiries later proved it wasn't) with ill judged chat?

Also the terrible events didn't stop our precious snowflake Rose from actually starting riots in the years to come over issues like a fan taking a picture of him at a gig.

    Anyhoo

Axl Rose ‘Disgusted’ By David Lee Roth Mocking Tragic Deaths
    By Brett Buchanan - Apr 4, 2018

In a new Guns N’ Roses Central interview, former Guns N’ Roses manager Doug Goldstein was asked about two people passing away during a Guns N’ Roses performance in Donnington at the Monsters of Rock festival in 1988 with KISS and Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth. Alternative Nation transcribed Goldstein’s comments.

“I knew during the show, I knew when it was happening, but I didn’t tell the guys, because it crippled Axl [Rose]. When we got back to the hotel David Lee Roth was staying there and he was at the bar, and Axl said: ‘Can you introduce me to him? I want to talk to him.’ I said, ‘Yeah, sure. Dave, this is Axl.’ ‘Hey man, how you doing? Diamond Dave! Sit down!’ So Axl said, ‘How do you deal with stuff like that when it happens?’ He goes, ‘Aw fuck man, you’re in the U.K. 10 people die every time they hold a soccer match. Fuck it! It’s rock and roll!’ Axl just said, ‘Really? I’m sorry, I don’t really want to sit here anymore.’ He went back to his room. He was disgusted at Dave, and I was kind of embarrassed that I introduced them. To each his own I guess. Everybody has their own way of getting through things.”

He added, “When I was working with [David Lee Roth], he used to get fucked up and want to throw kicks at me. So I went to knock his head off one time in the elevator. Andy, his bodyguard jumped in and said, ‘Doug, you can’t hit him!’ I said, ‘Fuck you.’ I said, ‘Where I come from, if somebody continues to throw kicks at you, you knock them on their ass and then they don’t throw kicks anymore.’ ‘Well he pays the bills!’ ‘I don’t care, I’ll quit, I’ll go home. I don’t give a shit.'”

Axl claiming to care about his fans while he shows up for am 8 pm gig at midnight? Okay...

The fucking bullshit excuse given on that one by Goldstein is that Axl had a 4 hour vocal warm up and if he made one mistake he would start again. He did all this because he loved the fans so much and didn't want to give them anything less than 100%. Fans would prefer he go on at 1am than on time and be anything less than perfect.

What a fucking crock of shit. It's a 3 hour podcast I've only listened to about an hour or so but stuff like that did make me tend to want to defend the Roth thing.

        Meh.

I don't even care if Goldstein's characterization of what Roth said to Rose post-Donnington in 1988 re: the deaths is 100% accurate or total bullshit, since both Roth AND Rose are a couple of looney tunes.

The time for Goldstein to have told this story was 30 years ago, since it sounds made up. As pointed out by Sesh and twona, Rose has hardly ever been the example of a rock musician who was accused of caring too much about the fans, and Rose earned that shitty reputation time and time again on the Illusions tour and countless times during the early 2000s.

I don't believe that at all, except for Dave maybe did say something to make Axl feel better and not blame himself.

I have read more than once (probably somewhere on this site), that Dave had a few fans die at the same festival, and when he found out later, he hand-wrote a letter to each of the parents.

No way would Dave not care about anyone's fans dying.

Dave was on after Guns N Roses and you can listen to the bootlegs as he spends lots of his show doing crowd control stopping until fans could get help and so on.

If I had the time or motivation I would put all the clips on YouTube right underneath their podcast.

Sounds to me like Axl is the type of guy who can find a reason to hold a grudge pretty easily.

Chances are Dave was just trying to try and make Axl not feel responsible...sure a bit flippant but c'mon.

Referenced in the latest DLR Podcast here he is talking again about Dave from around 9 minutes in.

Stories from when he was Director of Security for the EEAS band.
