    Now That's a Set List...

Thats a set list alright... but I I would prefer to see something that included at least half new music.

Van Halen made their name early in their "concert" career opening for big names and blowing them off the stage with music people had never heard before.

In 83, Autograph opened for Van Halen, and though they did not blow Van Halen off the stage, their music kicked ass. It sounded somewhat familiar, had a good beat, and left you feeling like each time a song started playing you would be like...Yeah... I've heard this one....okay, maybe no, but WTF, its good anyway!

A concert of mostly new songs with just a few classics would leave a few fans disgruntled thinking they didn't even play any of their good stuff. But for music connosieurs, and the future generation, a kick ass concert of quality tunes would leave the majority of the people in awe. Damn, they still got it. Now thats Van Halen.

I am an idealist. Thats what I want to see.

Autograph opened for VH on the 1984 tour, not '83....

I don't know where you saw them, but I saw them in San Diego, and the only thing blowing was Autograph, as in they blew dog.... In fact, the crowd booed them so much that they didn't nearly stop between songs....

That's a pretty damn good setlist Bob, I'll give that to ya... As few comments, if I may....

I've always thought that EWS would be an outstanding opening song in concert....

Because this is a dream setlist (we can all dream, can't we ), lose the drum and bass solo....

Jump can go away also, IMHO.....

Curious as to why no Pretty Woman ?? Just an oversight, or intentional ???

Me Wise Magic as the closing song is an interesting one.... Not sure I'd have that song close the show, although definitely would be on the setlist for sure....

IMO if I had the chance to pick a closing song that they've never done as the closer, and really making it a crowd pleaser, I think I'd pick Panama.... That song has all the elements suited for Dave, i.e. break in the middle to butter the crowd....

Great list!!! Talk about a show that wouldn't give you a break in the action! My voice would be history after this show. I love MWM as the second encore, that song would be an absolute must for a Dave/VH reunion. I wouldn't mind axing the solos (except for Ed and Dave's, if he has one) and throwing in Beautiful Girls and Jaime's Cryin. You gotta have Jaime's Cryin!!!

Ok, okay dokie, alrighty then. I saw then in Wichita, Kansas, and I am quite certain in was in 83 (June, I believe). If not autograph, then who opened?

I do not have to explain my musical tastes to any of you. hmphf. I would probably be the only one on this board that would be happy to see Dave back with Van Halen and do a show of ALL new songs. I can live with that. My world is a happy place.

How about some Dave solo stuff? I would love to hear Ed forced to play Drop In The Bucket, 40 Below, Wawazat, and Perfect Timing!

Nice... Though, I'd lose the bass solo, have "Me Wise Magic" switch places with "CGTSNM" and throw in "Could This Be Magic" and "Ice Cream Man". (Little acoustic number never hurt anyone, IMO...)
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

Knock yourself out with your musical tastes, as if I gave a shit, but you might want to get your facts straight before talking shit about them....

For the last fucking time, it was 1984....

Good ideas them all. I don't know...I thought MWM was a good choice for a closer, since it was such a monumental song in Van Halen history (even if it wasn't the fastest or the most amazing or...whatever). Seems like it'd be a really neat way to wind the night up, whenever I think about it...something nobody would really expect but something very appropriate.

As far as leaving out Pretty Woman was concerned, it was mostly intentional - you'll notice I didn't include Dancing in the Street either, I figured one cover for the night was enough. Beautiful Girls and Jamie's Cryin' are positive choices as well...well, fuck, they could go out and play two hours worth of anything (excluding "The Shit Years 1986-2004") and I'd still be there.

Hearing them do solo Roth material wouldn't be at all unwelcomed by me, but I don't find it particularly necessary. I would rather it be more about Van Halen music than David Lee Roth music, but if they wanted to throw in It's Showtime or Little Texas or something, bring it the fuck on!

Yes, Panamark, I dropped Hear About it Later...sorry, my bad! Just an oversight.

As far as the solos are concerned, well...I could drop them too, save Eddie's, but - so long as they're not ten minutes long and Mike does something other than make fart noises, I tried to place the solos in an appropriate part of the setlist, both of them being a good lead in to the next number (hence - drum solo introduces EWS, bass solo introduces STIL?). And, shit, it was mostly traditional in classic live VH settings anyway, so...but I would like to see the length cut down. I saw VH after the release of the live album (sue me) and, when all the reviews were coming in stating that Mike's solo was long and boring, he must have listened...because it only went on for about a minute or two and was (thankfully) over.

So...this brings up another question...does (or did) Van Halen listen to the critics?

And if so, what does that bode for the future, with all these reviews stating that Hagar's return has yielded a steaming pile of shit and everybody's longing for the Diamond Days?

    Interesting.
    Twistin' by the pool.

Damn. So I wonder whose concert I did go see back in Wichita, Kansas in 1983? The one where I actually met, Eddie, Alex, Michael and David. Wishful thinking maybe?

But now just what if that site has misinformation printed on it. But then this is the web. Couldn't possibly happen that someone somewhere else might be full of shit, or that list is maybe INCOMPLETE OR INACCURATE... Sheesh.

    You're reaching bro, you're reaching....

I know that the website says this, but remember that the only dates that VH played in '83 were the South American gigs and then the US Festival in May.... After that, it was back to the studio to work on the 1984 album....

If you have the "Early Days" DVD, Ed Anderson confirms that by talking about Dave's Amazon trip after the S.A. gigs, then having to rush back to start rehearsing for the US Festival.....

I don't have the early days DVD. I don't have my concert ticket stubs. I don't have the t-shirt I bought at the concert. But I remember meeting them. I remember the year because I was 17. I had just moved out on my own and away from all my friends and family a couple of months before this concert. My best friend came down for the show, and it was the first time I had seen anyone from home since leaving.

Its a lot longer story than that... but I am just saying... there are several reasons I remember! But fuck it. It don't matter. Okay, your right, I am wrong, until I have tangible proof otherwise. Happy?

I'd like to see them open with Light Up the Sky or House of Pain-Not their biggest hits, but tunes that would definitely get the crowd going. As for the rest here's my wishlist:

    Runnin W/the Devil
    Beautiful Girls
    So This is Love?
    Hot For Teacher
    And the Cradle Will Rock
    On Fire
    Mean Streets
    Pretty Woman
    Everybody Wants Some
    Me Wise Magic
    Jamie's Cryin
    Ice Cream Man
    Panama
    In A Simple Rhyme
    DOA
    Unchained
    Ain't Talkin Bout Love
    You Really Got Me

    Encores:
    Little Guitars
    Dance the Night Away
    Jump

I was almost going to leave out YRGM & Jump because I'm kind of tired of them, but who wouldn't expect to hear them again? I wouldn't mind them dropping them in favor of Hear About it Later and Women in Love though.

About the same. I just think On Fire is a hell of a Opener. I also Love Drop Dead Legs and Beautiful Girls.

My best friend came down for the show, and it was the first time I had seen anyone from home since leaving.

Its a lot longer story than that... but I am just saying... there are several reasons I remember! But fuck it. It don't matter. Okay, your right, I am wrong, until I have tangible proof otherwise. Happy?
Any chance it was during the Diver Down Tour ???

I remember seeing Dave with VH in 1961...they opened for the Broken Combs...who at the time had Pete Best and Phil Collins on Drums, and Patty Smyth singing lead...

    great tune...

    wait...I wasn't born yet...forget what I said...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

Heres what you have to understand. I did a LOT of drugs back in the day. Had a lot going on. I KNOW it was Wichita, I KNOW it was 83. I KNOW it was Van Halen. Anything beyond that as far as opening band, month of the concert, etc...I really couldn't tell ya-even as far as what all songs they played.

But really, I am giving up the fight. You are absolutely correctomundo. I will give you 5*. But if and when I get proof. IM POSTIN IT.

    LMFAO.... OK, truce bro....

Hope you understand, I'm not trying to rub it in or anything like that, just trying to point out that there's no way it was 1983....

But you go ahead and post it when you get the proof....

Realize it's a long setlist, but Roth was pulling off 19 or so tunes on the 2002 tour in 90 minutes. Just has to do with keeping the onstage raps to a minimum, eliminating the drum and bass solos, and keeping the unaccompanied guitar solo to a minimum.

This was a lot tougher than I thought, since any classic reunion tour would likely be the last tour......what songs would I want to hear, knowing it would be the last time they'd be played?

Plus, the reality would be that Mike would want his bass solo kept in, so there's 5 or so minutes there wasted, plus Alexandras multiple drum breaks, so there's another 5 minutes wasted. Plus you know Eddie would go out and noodle around for 10 minutes or so.......plus not even taking into account if they'd be touring off any new material or not........plus Roth rapping with the audience, so there's about a half hour out of what would I'd hope be at least a 2 hour show gone...

A reunited classic Van Halen wouldn't have the physical endurance nor the lack of self-indulgence to play as many tunes as I'd want to hear, but it'd be nice to see 'em try
