    I'll Wait?

I love the 1984 album. Every song on it is great (well Top Jimmy is merely OK) except for I'll Wait. I've come to the conclusion that it is in fact a Van Hagar tune in disguise! Along with Jump it showed that Ed was moving away from the guitar towards cheesy synth sounds but at least Jump is a great tune. The only redeeming value I'll Wait has is the attitude Dave brings to the vocals, but even so the song leaves me to wonder what the future would have held had they not split. The two '96 tunes proved that CVH would definitely been able to crank out awesome rock tunes, but a question remains: Could the have kept making albums that equal the 6? I simply can not see Dave liking I'll Wait. The only reason i can think of for that song ending up on 1984 is that Ed wanted to include it and Dave agreed to compromise. I believe that had they stayed together there would have been more cheesy synth tunes on future VH albums due to Ed.That's why i believe that while they certainly would have kept making tunes to equal the classics, the quality of the albums as a whole would have declined. Not by much but still noticeably.

I'll Wait is a difficult one.

i love the vocals, like you say, and the lyrics are good in places too, the idea of Dave flicking through a magazine to pick out girlfriends makes me chuckle.

However the chorus suffers from a little generic ballad syndrome.

Musically, it was definately a shape of things to come, although without screaming poodle vocals to make it really bad.

However I do think that the rhythm section separates it from the Van Hagar songs of the same ilk, there is more of a groove going on and it sounds nowhere near as clunky as some the crap they laid down with sammy.

It probably is my least favourite CVH tune, although I never skip it.

You have raised a valid point tho.

    mmmmm

I think what MAPRamone is getting at is that it was the a presage of the keyboard driven ballads to come.

Of course it's nowhere near as bad, but it could be considering the beginning of the road....

I've always dug it, especially in direct contrast to Slappy's tunes....

The groove in that song is NOTHING like they did in a synth song after.....

It's got an almost foreboding qualit to it.

And Dave sounds great on it.

I didn't by any means mean to imply it's as bad as Spammy tunes, i just don't think it stands up to the rest of CVH catalogue. Dave does sound great on it and really on every track on the album.

dave almost rescues that song with his attitude and good lyrics...trying to shake cream out of shit...but it's far away from being a "killer" tune...

Awesome!!! Great comments. I also agree with the groove the boys have going. Alex sure was a talented drummer back in the day. This song I like very much!!

Van Halen with Roth took music about Babes to a new level.

There is a special quality that gives the overview of CVH top billing.

Not a lot of -I got Burned- the flow is like -Good Times- are ahead
and Fine Babes are just around the corner.

I'll mention Spam now and finish with Dave, i don't like haveing to mention Doornob every time i mention Dave.Spams tunes about
women are like a little kids fear or over-elation fantasy gone wrong
with no bite / lack of passion boring easy nothings.

Dave and ED (but from Daves Solo) I'm leaning to Dave is the Master of the CVH sound and attitude and lyrical style. The true enjoyment
of the Fem is displayed as a appreciation of what may be.

This lust and desire is very well executed in -I'll Wait-. It may be one of the finest tunes ever written, concieved, engineered, produced, displayed, layed down, listened too, and for the ages . On the subject
of the complexity that is The Lady.

I agree with you on the keyboards. It makes the song so... dated.

Nevertheless, it still gets major play on my cd player. I always said "'Tisn't about the instrument with which is played... 'tis about the QUALITY of the music."

And that music IS Top Shite! You can't get that kind of vibe from Van Hagar, synths, guitars or otherwise.

    Cheers! :bottle:

They should've used a Rhodes instead of an Oberheim...
