Back to our Trader Joe's vintage ale though......

Cracked that one open tonight as I was tracking Satan Claus' journey on NORAD.

Turns out that it's made by UNIBROUE out of Canada. Been a while since I tried their products, but it probably compares to the Trois Pistoles best.

    UNIBROUE - OUR BEERS PAGE

However, considering the big bottles of this are going for 7 bucks or so on this side of the border, the Trader Joe's version is a great deal

And for your New Years Eve selection from the FORD Country beer taps......

Also from Trader Joes: Winterfest Lager.

as previously mentioned, some of the Trader Joes beer brands are actually available under another name elsewhere. In this case, it appears to be Gordon Biersch's Winter Bock.

No problem... any west coast winter beer is worthy of FORD Country review.....

In the 11th century, Bavarian monks sustained themselves during winter fasts with beers made from strong, dark flavored malts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Alcohol 7.5% v/v, Bitterness 24 IBU, Residual sugar 4.7%.

Available in 6 packs and kegs. This is a seasonal product available only during the months of October through February.
Though 7.5% is strong for a lager, this is a very "drinkable" beer that even a Bud/Miller/Coors drinker could probably handle. Though they would probably be out on their ass after two of them.

Don't see the GB label that often around here, but I'll definitely pick up the Trader Joe's version as long as it's in season.

    Happy New Beer to all!!

Came across this tonight when I was picking up some munchies for the State of the Union speech.....

    SLIPKNOT IMPERIAL IPA
    Available January to Mid March
As the name implies, every aspect of this American
style IPA is amplified - from the up-front hop aroma and
bitterness to the big malt body.
Available in 22oz Bottles and Draught
    ABV: 8.2% IBUs: 80

Very nice hoppy IPA. Too bad they aren't selling it in 6 packs.

Dear Lord Almighty Jesus, I can't believe it's been almost 8 months since my last Beer confession. But after a day filled with minor victories over corporate satanism, fond rememberances of high school frustrated romances and reconnecting with long lost friends (and a good deal of GAyR bashing) it was goddamned time to celebrate with a beer worthy of mention......

Thank God for our friends at Sierra Nevada breweries and their Torpedo Extra IPA.....

Sierra Nevada Torpedo Ale is a big American IPA; bold, assertive and full of flavor and aromas highlighting the complex citrus, pine and herbal character of whole-cone American hops.

Weird you bumped this thread today. I had a dream last night where I was enjoying a glass of some amber colored brew. No name on it, so not sure what I was craving. But was a rich golden amber color and very smooth and tasty. I never dream about beer either. Gotta hit the store tomorrow & see what I find.

We return to the Beercyclopedia with this special edition from our friends at the Deschutes Brewery of Bend Oregon.......

    Black Butte XXI
A Tribute to Black Butte Porter

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.

Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

    Releases:
    June 2008
    June 2009

    Alc. by Vol.
    11%
    IBUs
    55

If you are a fan of regular Black Butte Porter, this is a whole different animal entirely. I actually prefer Deschutes' Obsidian Stout to the regular Black Butte, but this shit is just something else entirely. It's like porter, stout, coffee, and chocolate all in one bottle. And at 11% alcohol, one bottle (22 oz) delivers a decent buzz. If this came in a six pack, it would be more than enough to put you away for the night.

Tragic that a beer this good isn't available all the time, but it is winter beer season, so it's not like there aren't many other great options out there.

Just a side note.... Trader Joe's holiday ale is available now (had some at the FORD family Thanksgiving festivities) and it's just as good as it was last year, so grab some of that too. It will probably be easier to find than the Black Butte XI (assuming there's a Trader Joes within reasonable driving distance)

Our Christmas 2010 selection comes from the frozen Arctic tundra of the Alaskan Brewing Company..........

Originating in England in the 19th century, barley wine is a style of strong ale so named because many versions have a high alcohol content comparable to wines of the same era. American barley wines feature big malt character and high residual sweetness, counterbalanced by the generous addition of hops.

Alaskan Barley Wine is a full bodied ale, deep mahogany in color and brewed with an array of complementing malts to achieve its high original gravity. Multiple hop additions in the boil and dry hopping during fermentation provide contrast to the big malt character resulting in the smooth balance that distinguishes this specialty brew. Like many fine wines, Alaskan Barley Wine may be aged in the bottle and gains deeper malt complexity and smoothness over time.

Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

Alaskan Barley Wine Ale is made from glacier-fed water, a generous blend of the finest Pacific Northwest hop varieties and premium two-row and specialty malts. Our water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field and from more than 90 inches of rainfall each year.

Alaskan Barley Wine is best if served at warmer temperatures, approximately 45 to 50 degrees. While impressive on its own, the richly complex flavor is enhanced when paired with desserts, strong cheeses and hearty, flavorful stews.

From the Alaska Natives who first trained dog teams for winter transportation to the Russian and American settlers of the 19th century to today's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race®, the history of Alaska is tethered alongside the history of dog mushing. Dog teams were the primary source of winter transportation in Alaska before the advent of the airplane and are widely used even today for sport racing as well as travel in remote areas of the state.

Leave a pint of this out for Santa, instead of the milk with the cookies. He'll appreciate it.

Well kids, it's allegedly summer, though you would never know it here in FORD Country, where it looks and feels more like about mid March. But since the calendar says summer, it's the time of the year when FORD drinks IPA. Had some of the Sierra Nevada Torpedo earlier this month, but I already reviewed that stuff.

So I stumbled across a new brand recently, Bridgeport's Hop Czar IPA......

This is not to be confused with the regular Bridgeport IPA. That stuff really didn't impress me, but they did it right this time, even if the guy on the label resembles the Burger King mascot. These dumbfucks have their website entirely in Flash, so I can't copy and paste the relevant details, but let's just say this is one of the hoppiest IPA's this side of Anderson Valley CA, and sadly, I haven't seen the Hop Ottin ale around here recently, so I needed something to replace it. This one definitely fits the bill.

So all you hopheads listen up to me. Stay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be.... and pick up some Hop Czar.

BridgePort Hop Czar, an Imperial IPA brewed from our award winning IPA recipe, first introduced to rave reviews in 2008. It is a triple-hopped bottle-conditioned, Imperial-style IPA that carries a deep malt background with enthusiastic citrus and floral notes paired with high hop bitterness. The newest in our permenant 6-pack line, the Hop Czar recipe blends copious amounts of Nugget, Chinook, Cascade and Centennial hops.

    Alcohol: 7.5%

So I saw this Guinness Black Lager in the store yesterday and couldn't pass it up. This product rollout is so new that Guinness doesn't even have it listed on their website yet, so I don't have any of the details about the product that I normally post with my reviews.

You can see from the picture above that it looks like Guinness, though the head foam is more like that of a typical beer, because these bottles don't come with the little nitro torpedo cartridges in them like the Guinness draught bottles do.

The taste? Well, it's a Lager that tastes a little like Guinness. No surprise there I guess. This would be the perfect beer to fill a cooler or an old washtub with some bottles and ice at a summer barbecue, which makes it even more ironic that they roll it out after Labor Day weekend. And at only 4.5% alcohol, nobody's getting drunk from this stuff easily, so you don't have to worry about anybody driving home.

So overall, I'd say it's a good beer, maybe even a great beer as lagers go, but when it comes to Guinness, I'll be sticking to the stout.

OK, so the Guinness Black Lager just wasn't doing the job, so it was time to break out some of the stuff I had hiding in the back of the fridge. First up is this entry from our friends at the Rogue Brewery of Newport Oregon....

Regular Dead Guy Ale (named for Jerry Garcia's band) is good stuff, so I thought I'd give this new spin on it a shot. I've always been more of a beer drinker than a whiskey drinker (obviously) but I always gotta give it a shot when my favorite microbreweries try to combine one world of alcohol with another.

Style: Barrel aged Food Pairing: Pork, Hot & Spicy

    Tasting Notes:

Deep honey in color with a malt aroma, a caramel, vanilla, and oak finish.

    8 Ingredients:

Malts:Carastan, Rogue Micro-Barley Farm Dare & Risk malts.
Hops: Saaz, Willamette, Rogue Micro-Farm Hop Yard Revolution hops.

Yeast & Water: Pacman Yeast & Free Range Coastal Water.
    Specs:

    16º PLATO

    40 IBU

    78 AA

    16º Lovibond

    6.4% ABV
The caramel overtones are definitely there, though I'm not really tasting the vanilla. The oak and the hint of whiskey from the bottle definitely come through, and that's what really distinguishes it from the regular Dead Guy Ale. One Hell of an interesting beer. Wish it came in 6 packs, since I had only 1 22 oz bottle for review purposes.

And our final entry tonight comes from the Ninkasi Brewing Company of Eugene Oregon. I believe this is their first time in the Beercyclopedia. Probably because their stuff doesn't get north of the Columbia River all that often, and in fact, this bottle was smuggled over the state line. After the Guinness Black Lager earlier, I found myself really craving a decent Stout to finish off the night. Thank God our friends at Ninkasi did not disappoint....

    Oatis Oatmeal Stout
Available in 22oz. Bottles and On Draft, Year Round

    Statistics
    First Brewed: 2007
    Starting Gravity:
    Bitterness: 50 IBUs
    Alcohol %: 7.2
Malt: 2 Row Pale Malt, Chocolate Malt, Crystal Malt, Roasted Barley, Oats
    Hops: Nugget

    On the bottle:
A rich complex Oatmeal Stout with just enough hops to balance the copious quantities of dark roasted malts, and the addition of oatmeal for a creamy smooth drinkability.

    Tasting Notes:
Oatmeal Stout is characterised by a roasted front flavor, smooth rich oats, a touch chocolate flavor and dry finish. Oatis is bigger than the traditional style with more alcohol, body and a touch more bitterness to keep it balanced.

    Food Pairings:
Beef, Pork, Lamb, Stews, Chocolate, Berries, Brulee's
Before tonight, I was sure that Deschutes Brewery's Obsidian Stout and Barney Flatts Oatmeal Stout from the Anderson Valley Brewery in Mendocino CA were the main contenders for the "Best Stout on the West Coast", but goddamn it, ladies and gentlemen, it appears we have a third contender. The chocolate flavor really comes through here, and of course that oatmeal will lower your cholesterol, so this shit even qualifies as natural medicine. Dr. FORD prescribes 22 0z, because that's the only way you can get it, unless you can find it on tap in Oregon.

The good thing about the Guinness Black is that it's designed to be drank from the bottle, while the stout definitely takes a taste hit by being bottled. Plus it's supposed to remain a part of the Guinness brand and not just a seasonal/anniversary type brew.

I went to a launch party for the New Belgium Belgo IPA last week. One of the less bitter IPAs I've had in a while. Not too bad if you haven't tried it.

New Belgium usually puts out good stuff, so I'll definitely look for it. Seems like I can always find something from them in the stores, though not the whole product line, sadly.

Yeah, a friend of mine is a rep for them and is always keeping them flowing when we're out, so I've grown kinda fond of them myself!

Looks like some interesting stuff, Lord. Too bad I'll never find it in this one-synagogue town.

(Can't even get Kosher Coke here, let alone Kosher Beer)

Not sure about the variety packs, but it just so happens that Fred Meyer has Deschutes, Pyramid, and Red Hook products for $6.99/6 pack this week, which is probably as good of a price as you're going to get anymore.

    So look for....

    or

    or

can't really go wrong with any of them. Or any other products from those breweries, really.

As a light "lawn-mowing" beer, I enjoyed the Leinenkugel Summer Shandy, which was light and tasty with lemonade aftertaste:

    She is gone now, alas...

    I'd give her 3.5/5.0:
