    Thumbs down Early Years-VH Documentary

    Hey,

Has anyone out there seen the documentary Van Halen: The Early Years? I bought it and promptly returned it because it sucked! It didn't do these guys any justice. I was surprised because it looked like a couple of college kids put it together. Any thoughts?

Gotta remember, it was completely unauthorized....Think about it, no way the Van Heinikens are gonna authorize a documentary about the Roth years....

So, in that respect, they couldn't play any VH songs, couldn't show any copyrighted VH videos or concerts (the ones you did see were bootlegs), and any interviews they did with the band were ones from network TV pretty much...

Based on that, I enjoyed the hell out of it... I thought they told the story of their rise to a powerhouse band quite well.... The interviews with their buddies, roadies, etc. really provided a great perspective....

If ya want Van Halen Early Years, re-read "Crazy From The Heat", baby! You'll get it right from the horse's mouth, and you'll get a cool-ass view of it, too!

I thought it sucked as well. Nothing new, nothing revelatory, and very little in the way of actual footage. I doubt we'll ever see a truly GREAT film on the band.

Well I liked it 'cause it was not authorized. 'Cause they were friends from the very beginning.

You don't get entertainment but, you do get info from people close to them.

UNTRUE, good DRGrafenberg. I WANTED something that would SINK EVH & SHEMP on this DVD. "They were in Ballet as Teenagers" "They were members of the Chess club" "They performed in the Gay rodeo" etc. It would have confirmed a few suspicions. Okay, out of context.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I like the thing. Lots of early history of the band. How things got started. Interviews from early roadies, managers, fans, Mark Stone (bass player pre-Anthony) etc. Lots of good stuff about Dave. Made things evident that the band never would have got anywhere without Dave. Later in the tape Alex does start slamming on him but you can fast forward the thing. Anyway it's the closest thing to a VH: Behind the Music we'll ever get. Also there's a 2-3 minute spot on the Atomic Punks! Great!

    Confusion!

 So, is the damn thng worth shelling out the dinero, or what? Some of ya make it sound intriguing, some of you make it sound like it should be avoided like the Plague!

    WHAT'S A ROTHAHOLIC TO DO??????

My theory on the Alex V's hatred of Davy Baby: He was sexually attracted to him, and in brave moment fuelled by large amounts of alcohol, he let Dave know about it! Dave, in a fit of laughter, dismissed this revelation by telling Al, "Dude, quit fuckin' around! I ain't no faggot!"

Yeah, kind of a pointless exercise in one sense, since a DVD about Van Halen without the music is like a porn vid without the sex.

Interesting in getting some insights of the band dynamic from people close to the band/persons other than the band themselves.

    Definitely non-essential.

The first time i watched it i also was a little disappointed. Mainly because it did not have any vintage video's of the early concerts. But after seeing it a few times it really starts to grow on you..now i watch it about once a month usually after a night of drinking. One of the best parts is Mike's old band mate from "SNAKE"..dude that guy is funny as shit. Remember that any old Van Halen is good Van Halen....my friend try playing it a couple of times it will enter your sole.

They couldn't throw the music on there for legal reasons since Ed's ass is sitting on all that shit. Or he got drunk one night and forgot where he put the stuff. Whatever.

There's lots of previously unseen interviews with people close to the band. Most of the stuff does focus on the early days, alot more than just the PA stuff. Tons more stuff than the Sammy/Dave life after VH VH1 deal. This is not somethign I'd shell out $50 for but I got it for 10 plus shipping. At that price I'd highly recommend it.

There are the interviews of Alex on the DVD where he's ragging Dave for the Diver Down album, specifically "Dancing in the Street? That's not Van Halen!"

Evidently the boys hated it so much they included it on the BOBW fiasco. Go figure.

Sorry....my vote is that it's great. It's a classic VH DVD with some info I wasn't aware of....plus those extra shots of the WACF cover I've never seen before...I like the DVD...

Oh, I totally understand WHY none of Van Halen's music was on the DVD.

My point is, if you are unable to put the music on the DVD, why bother making it?

Would have been better off to load it up with live classic clips and sell it as a bootleg.

The interviews with people around in the early days are worth seeing.
"Dave man.......Dave was THE DUDE". LMAO!

Some nice early stills of the Van Halen brothers as kids....Ed's smoking at like 13 and Al could pass for an adolescent Imelda Marcos.

You'll get ultra-pissed with some of the back-handed comments from the other members.

If you're a VH fan you should have it.
