Dave was smokin! Lost his range you say, no fuckin way!
His voice was in top form.
"Look at all the people here tonite" brought me and the near capacity crowd to a massive cheer and a great walk down memory lane.
During "HFT" he read my shirt "It Ain't....." and he gave me a smile that went from coast to coast. My wife was melting, "fuck he still gets me hot, 50 yrs old, and look at him in those spandex oh my God...why can't you look that good honey".
The set list included a few songs from VH1, II, WACF, FW and 1984, EEAS, SS CFTH and Diamond Dave.
The set list was as follows (not in order)
    HFT
    Mean Streets
    RWTD
    DTNA
"SOMEBODY GET ME A DOCTOR"(crowd went fuckin nuts)
    Ice Cream Man
    And the Cradle will Rock

Dave has his scream back, man he can still hit the highs and he can still entertain.
Dave does not come on stage angry.
He gets the crowd goin and keeps them on their toes for the entire show. But most of us MOFO's know this already
This was the second or 3rd show on this mini tour, and man Dave was in fine form.
The crowd ranged from the 50 yr olds, to the 40's, 30's, 20's and the teens.
There was this 19 yr old guy named Dave next to me who couldn't believe he was seein Dave, he loves CVH and had no good words to say about the...........he even was wearing a VH shirt with Dave above it that he bought on E-bay.
The band was tight. Ray was fuckin solid, Brian(man this fucker can shred) was "On FIRE" I swear if ya closed yer eyes you honestly thought you waz at a CLASSIC VAN HALEN show.
But that wasn't the case man.......................You was at a

    Ask away.
    David Lee Roth

This show, for all intent purposes, was a gift to Roth fans for 'Keeping and Defending The Faith', for not giving in and buying a 'BOBW' CD or for seeing those schlepps on this latest purposeless VH tour. We heard Van Halen the way it was meant to be heard, period. It was like finding an unlimited spring of fresh mountain water after thirsting in a talentless Van Hagar desert for 10 years (It's been 10 yrs since DLR graced the stage in the T.O. area). My feelings toward a reunion? Who gives a flying sh**. I don't. Dave proved without a shadow of a doubt that he don't need the remaining members of a once mighty Van Halen. He's doing just fine with his new band, his voice is back, his band played VH & Vai to a 'T', so screw Van Halen. If a reunion happens, it'll be 'cause Ed and Al BEGGED Dave to come back. And since I don't see that happening on this side of paradise, I'll settle for the alternatives....something 'Just Like Paradise'. Just when you thought there might have been some doubt as to whether or not a 50 year old could kick your ass and smile and still carry the good ol' VH flag of yore....he came, he saw and he kicked Van Hagar ass AGAIN!

Guys, I didn't like the show...

    Hey guys,

First of all this is my first post here!

And even though this is a not-so-positive review, lemme tell you something... up until last Thursday night, "Who died and made you David Lee Roth?" was my motto.

I do like Van Hagar, but watching Sammy sing Ain't Talkin' bout Love, Panama, and Jump, always made me cringe.

I was at the VH show back in 1984. I was there when the freakin' roof caved in at the Montreal Forum when the opening chords to Jump started. I remember when he did his jump off the riser during Unchained like it was yesterday.

Hell, I still watch my old VH bootlegs and feel the hair on my arm rise.

I drove hours to see DLR. My first time since circa-1987 when Poison opened for him.

Anyways, I wrote a quick review on another board... Here it is...

Just wanted to say that I went to the show. Sat (stood, actually) front row, a little towards stage right, in front of that 15 year old on stage - Joshi.

I went with my partner who is also a huge fan.

I am in a rush now... but here are some thoughts:

1 - The set list was AWESOME! So many VH classics, it was sick!!

2 - I had passes to meet him and comp tickets, but I used my own front row tix, and I MISSED the meet and greet! Shit! I didn't realize it was that far from Toronto. I met a girl at my cousin's wedding who met him backstage afterwards. She was the one he was bugging all night. "You are the best thing to happen to brunettes since Snow White"... remember that?? That was her. She was NOT impressed, and didn't like the aging-rock-star-thing... She did say he was super nice during the Meet and Greet after the show. (For casino high rollers)

3 - His people told me that they sold 4,600 tix out of a 5,500 capacity.

4 - We didn't like the show for the following reasons:

a - Dave COMPLETELY ignored the front row/audience. There was one book that he signed, but aside from that... total ignorage of all of us. NO hand slapping. No high-fives. No sharing of any JD. No JD at all. No nothin'.

It was SO rude. The guys near us had an awesome banner. He didn't even LOOK at it. Nothing. They put it on stage, and he pretty much stepped over it. Disgusting. My opionion of DLR went from God-Like to jerk in about 90 minutes. Where's the connection?? Aside from the canned "Don't stick your tongue out at me" stuff... Geez... Girls were even touching his leg... Nothing. As if the front row didn't even exist (at least not in front of Stage right, anyhow)

b - The crowd sucked. Borrrring. We kept turning around to see. It looked like everyone was sleeping. No one stood up. No energy. No nothing. When the opening chords to JUMP or PANAMA came on, there was a bit of applause, but hey... When I saw them in 1984, and Jump came on, oh my... the Montreal Forum nearly came crashing down. I think it registered 7 on the Ricter scale down in New York.

c - The band was boring. No great stage presence. It's like they were amateurs. That little kid, Joshi, threw a pick near me at the end of the show, and I am thinkin, "Pick that up! I don't want your pick!" Of course, when I sat Front row at VH a few years ago, I was BEGGING Michael Anthoy for a pick. When he motioned to me, "Okay... after.....!" I thought it was the coolest thing!

d-Dave was a clown. Unfortunately, being a clown worked very well 20 years ago, when he could've slept with ANY girl in the crowd. When he was Mr. Cool, with his long, flowing mane, he was THE MAN. Two nights ago, he was a total clown. It was like he was a parody of himself. I was quite upset. I may not sound like a DLR fan, but trust me... I always was.

e- Did I mention that he pretty much ignored the front row? Sheesh, there was one HUGE fan who was frantically waving his book in the air with a marker. Dave wouldn't even LOOK at him.

f- He's getting a little old to do his kicks. When he did a kick, my first thought was, "uh oh.. don't trip!" and "Phew! He made it!" My partner said the same thing in her mind. But it was still nice to see. Good for him.

It's hard to articulate my feelings. For the two hours after the show, on the way back to Toronto, we were trying to figure it out. "....What was wrong with the show?...."

As a lifetime VH fan, you'll probably understand why I was disturbed.

My partner summed it up best. She said, "I didn't feel the love... I just didn't feel the love."

And I think that sums it up.

Two weeks ago, we got free tix to Metallica. She went, I didn't. We both don't know any songs, but she can't refuse free tickets.

She said that even though she hsa no idea who Metallica is, they were 100% times better. She said the energy coming off the stage and crowd was NUTS. Crazy. Electrifying. (And she doesn't even like heavy metal).

I guess that is why Metallica SOLD OUT two nights in Montreal, with about 20,000 per show, and DLR was playing 2 hours north of Toronto, in some tiny city, selling 4,500 tickets in a casino.

Is it an accident? A coincidence?

She said they would talk about Montreal, and really jive with the crowd. I think the only think Dave had to say about the venue was during California Girls, he pointed to the audience when he said "and the NORTHEN girls..." I was happy that he remembered where he was.

I really thought that seeing DLR in front of my face, 20 years ex-post-facto, singing Jump and Panama would make me cry. (I'm the kind of guy who isn't too musically inclined, yet I know Jump note-for-note on my Keyboard and Panama note-for-note on my guitar.)

So, imagine my disappointment when I saw these songs at the show... I kept thinking, "Imagine if that were Alex behind the drums??????? Imagine if that were Mikey behind the base? Imagine if Ed was over there????

Like I said, it was a strange experience, because I've always -- ALWAYS considered DLR to be THE VH lead singer. I like Sammy and all, but seeing Sammy sing Panama was never cool, not in my books, anyways.

Also, they played runnin with the devil, too.

When I see Mikey do the opening BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM on my bootlegs, I have to rewind the tape again and again because it brings me shivers. And then, when David Lee Roth does his trademark flip over Michael's back, again, I rewind it again and again.

Two nights ago, I was watching them do Runnin' with the Devil, and I was thinking, "oh, this is cute... a cover band! They're pretty good!"

Now, here is what I have learned:

    Van Halen is David/Eddie/Alex/Mike.

I was picturing different combinations in my mind, and running them by my babe in the car.

"Let's say DLR left the stage, and his little band kept playing, and Sammy joined them."

    Okay, cool.
    Fun.

Now let's say Sammy played with his own band. Okay, again.. cool. Neat.

Now let's say Sammy was backed by Eddie/Alex/Mike... and of course, it brought a smile to my face.. it's still VH...

Then, however, in my mind, I pictured the following:

David's band of unknowns (who were still tight, by the way), left the stage...

The lights go dim, then fade to black... Then Alex surprises the crowd by taking over the drums, and starts the opening of Panama... and then Eddie starts with the opening riff... Mike is there grinning ear to ear... and then....

    ...out of stage left...

David Lee Roth slides out, and starts, "JUMMMMP BACK! WHAT's THAT SSSOUND?.."

Holy Sh!t! If that would've happened... I think that that the roof would've caved in.

    So, what can I say?

Sammy solo can probably sell out small venues and you'll have fun.

Van Hagar san sell out some medium-sized hockey rinks and you'll have some great moments.

David Lee Roth solo was... well, great setlist, no magic, no love... but a fun show, and can barely sell out a casino.

The original VH lineup.. Eddie/Alex/Michael/Dave could probably sell out olympic stadiums across the world.

The concert just showed me that anyone who would say, 'DAVID LEE ROTH IS VAN HALEN!" is just plain mistaking. Believe me, it's not easy for me to say this. I would LAUGH in people's faces when they would say, "I like the Sammy era better...."

But now I'm really down about this whole experience.

Tomorrow, I got tix for Van Hagar. I am sitting in the golden ring, next to Mikey. I am going to see how I feel. Maybe I'll be disappointed. Maybe not.

But all this to say, going to Casino Rama really screwed up my perception of Diamond Dave.

    My hightlight of the show:

When Dave first came on, and said his trademark, "LOOK AT ALLLLLLLLLL THE PEOPLE HERE, TOOOOOOO-NIGHTTTTT!"

We all said it along with him. That was great. I also loved when, during Aint Talkin bout Love, he said, "This is Sammy!" and started spinning around his mike stand and pretend to get caught up in it.."

    The band was tight.
    Dave did his kicks.
His voice was surprisingly very good.

    But no love.

There was no love coming off him.

    No magic.

Have any of guys seen him in concert lately, both at CasinoRama and elsewhere? Was it an off-night? Did you feel a strong connection with them. Did he look sincere to you?

Actually, I always laugh at people who prefer new-VH to old-VH.

What can I say? I didn't like the show.

As for Hammy... I always did like Can't Drive 55!
