    The Heaviest Van Halen Compilation

A Mate of mine has requested that I make him a "heavy" classic Van Halen compilation. He never really got into the whole Van Halen catalog like I did. I played him "Light up the Sky" recently and he fucking loved it. He asked if I could make him up a compilation CD of Van Halens heaviest songs.

I know this guy would hate "Dance the night away" but would love stuff like "Romeo Delight". If we had to pick 10-12 songs off the first six albums, what songs would be the heaviest ??

My first pick is "Light up the Sky"

Take away that ON FIRE song....I can't stand that song!

Then Dave had to remake that song with Baby's On Fire.

Danger in the rear view mirror, there's trouble in the wind

I made a C90 tape for my car:

    Runnin` with the devil
    Hot for teacher
    Romeo delight
    Women in love
    So this is love?
    Little guitars
    I`ll wait
    Secrets
    Unchained
    And the cradle will rock...
    I`m the one
    Somebody get me a doctor
    Eruption
    1984
    Jump
    In a simple rhyme
    Hang `em high
    Feel your love tonight
    Mean street
    Light up the sky
    The full bug
    On fire
    Panama
    Everybody wants some!!
    Sunday afternoon in the park
    One foot out the door
    Ice cream man

You`d have to cut 15 minutes out of that for a CD, though.

Right, but Jump made the list for Mr. Badguy as well.

If you need to trim 15 mins off his list, drop Jump, 1984, Secrets, and I'll Wait.

    DLR7884
I wouldn't consider those "heavy," there's a few others I'd replace as well.....

You are correct Sir. I also love Secrets, but my friend is more into the heavy/thrash types of metal, so I wouldnt put Secrets on there, even though I like it myself.

I really like "Relentless" off the DLR Band CD. Seems heavy to me.

    "Relentless" is a cool track.

Usually I put that on first and follow it up with a loud dose of "Indeedido."

    DLR7884
Best combo of back to back rockers on that album for sure.

Making a tape is a complex thing.

You`ve got to time it right or it runs out half way through a song or you end up with a blank spool at the end.

Yes, I like "I`ll wait", maybe because I play keyboard.

My original choice was "Hear about it later" rather than "Sunday afternoon in the park/One foot out the door" but it didn`t fit.

You should make a CD so you can figure out the track times, total disk time, etc.

That would be nice but I have a family to keep and a mortgage to pay and can`t just go around buying CD players for my car willy nilly.

I actually like tapes anyway, as you have to listen to the whole album without the luxury of a skip button.

True, but it sucks when the tape player eats the tape up, and it's nice to skip through the shit when you are listening to albums loaded with filler.

I don't know about over there, but here in the US you can get a portable CD player that hooks up through your tape player for about 40-50 bucks. Some are even cheaper.

    DLR7884
I hate it when I play a tape and it gets eaten!

Yes, you can get them cheap over here.

Then again I would still rather buy a CD and tape it rather than risk some shithead stealing it from my car.

My car, my CDs and my guitars are my favourite possesions.

If someone stole my car I would be doubley pissed if they got one of the other two with it.

Just a short list from me, but I'd say (in no particular order, natch):

    Atomic Punk
    Runnin' With The Devil
    Unchained
    Mean Street
    One Foot Out The Door
    House Of Pain
Eruption (although it's a bit on the short side for a full song, so leave it out if one must)
    On Fire
    'Dirty Movies'

Unfortunately, the songs from 'Halen II elude me slightly... Gotta dust off that one and have another listen. I think some of the first ones from there are heavy enough.

Agreed! I don't think it should be left off of any VH comp, tho.

Anyway, my list would look like this:
    On Fire
    Atomic Punk
    Im The One
    Somebody Get Me A Doctor
    Light Up The Sky
    DOA
    Fools
    Romeo Delight
    Tora/Loss Of Control
    Mean Street
    Sinners Swing
    Sunday Afternoon/One Foot
    Hang Em High
    Girl Gone Bad
    House Of Pain

You can't go wrong throwing 'Everybody Wants Some' in the mix, too.
