I am not passing judgment on Ed as a father, but he has been in his sons life since birth... the dependency gene is passed on biologically, whether the dad is around or not. Many kids who see what their parents become because of the drug of choice, are able to then make a concious decision to avoid that drug.

When things worsened, and after failed stints in Rehab, AA and counseling, I removed my son from the picture. My son see's his dad. Supervised by me and only when he's sober.
