The Choices for Notre Dame

Butch Davis. I think the guy is overrated...but...he may be the guy that knows how to bring this program back the way he did it with Miami...he can recruit...but can he under Notre Dame's restrictions?

Jon Gruden. Hometowner...just signed a new deal worth what...8 billion dollars? Don't see it...but would bring a bit of instant prestige

Dan Hawkins. Boise St....seems a bit Gerry Faustish to me...but...he may be the one guy that would come without precursors...and he's catholic...not that it matters...

Bobby Petrino. Louisville? I just don't see him making that transition...but has had a great year...

Nick Saban. I don't see Notre Dame hiring a rent-a-coach...but...he does seem to have a bit of Lou Holtz in him...

Bob Stoops. He has to be looked at for every big job...brought back Okie...could do it in Notre Dame...and WOULD RECRUIT...

Jeff Tedford. Maybe the one guy that can do it...runs a great offense...obviously can recruit...

A wildcard?...Charlie Weis. The New England offensive coordinator...and a Notre Dame grad. Obviously has a great offense...but...can he recruit? Someone would have to be hired to help him out there...

and Finally...the dark horse...Lou Holtz...Now...my thoughts on this are simple...He'd bring instant cred to the program again...and back to the old days...but he's old...but he'd be able to recruit...he could set his son up to take over...


Holtz is the interesting guy here...I think he WANTS to do it...would have done it three years ago...and may be a safe pick...but...would the Boosters go for it?

Given that the ND AD is an old Pac-10 bastard, he'll probably put a call into Tedford at Cal, and perhaps Chow at USC. Personally, I would prefer Tedford over Meyer, and I said as much BEFORE Urban took off to Florida. lol...

I really wish the AD would get fired, as he's the one who has fooked up the athletic department the past 5 years... one dumb decision after another...

More than a coach, ND needs a good recruiter, and in that respect, I wouldn't want to see Gruden or Weis or anyone from the Pro ranks that hasn't done it in college. I could see Butch Davis being easily talked into taking the job, I'm just not sure he's the right fit for ND, given the higher standards he'd have to work around in recruiting (Miami is a hell of a lot easier to recruit at than ND)....

So who knows... I wouldn't be surprised if that dumbass AD actually tries to re-hire Willingham just to add insult to injury and heap more embarrassment on the university....

Anyhow, they should at least make a solid effort at Bob Stoops... like Pojo and various columnists have pointed out, he'll be one of the legendary coaches of all time if he can bring back both OU and ND in the same lifetime.... lol... hell, maybe Barry Switzer is bored and needs something to do...
