I know! The earthquake was a 9.0 and moved the island 100 feet to a south!

I'm actually surprised no one else mentioned it before. I was waiting to see how long before someone said something.

    i'm betting there'll be
    some big waves on the
    north west coast of western
aus, the surfers will love it.

there was a big quake a
week or so ago south west of
    new zealand, but luckily
    no tsunami.

i waited too ally, to see if
    anyone would post.
    didn't wanna spoil ya b'day.
    how was it?
    hope you had some fun!

    the media are reporting
    up to 25,000 dead today.
    very very nasty.

    Ahh...

My pal flew from Thailand where he's been for the last couple of months to Western Australia just last week.

    Lucky.

    Cheers!

    sorry sesh,
    i didn't quote ya.
    but yes, last week would
    have been a good time
to leave thailand or sri lanka.

    heard on the news this
    morning that in indonesia
    thousands
    of homeless are sleeping
    in the streets with thousands
    of now bloated corpses.

    contaminated water,
    flies setting in,
    tropical heat,
    sounds like a stephen king
    story.

    not pretty.

    Just brutal.

    Saw some footage earlier....

Alot of tourist's children that have no idea where there parents are...toddlers that survived and obviously can't communicate, etc.

    Truly horrifying.

They said that sumbitch actually affected the rotation of the Earth. Any more questions as to why the squaw and I are gonna buy a couple of acres in the mountains when we build?

As long as the mountains aren't live or dormant volcanos (like most of them around here are) A good 9.0 quake just might be enough to set them off if the fault line is in the right place.

Apparently some islands have moved 100 feet.

My nearest bar is 20 minutes away so here's hoping it'll be a shorter walk tomorrow...

I'm sure it's fine otherwise it would be all over the news.

I just listened to a 10 minute report on NBC about someone that was at the WTC and within 2000 miles of this disaster and surviived while they spent 5 minutes on the 30 000 dead children.

Even now the US media is very inward looking and since not that many Americans go to this area on vacation in a few days it will probably stop being reported.

If you think that's fucked up, the US Government is only putting in 35 million in relief effort. That's about the equivalent of 5 hours spent on this Iraq war.

I found their site and it has nothing on the tsunami and I can't find a donation link. I recommend The Am. Red Cross, Amerihelps, and the AmericanJewish World Service. They claim a 90% delivery of funding to relief efforts. They also appear to check out. The Red Cross is just so big, they do already have tons of money.

Ooops--I meant AmeriCares. Action Against Hunger-USA also appears to be an efficient charity.

    Interesting Side Note

Did animals' 'sixth sense' save them from tsunami?
Thursday, December 30, 2004 Posted: 4:49 PM EST (2149 GMT)

    CNN
Wild life officials found no evidence of large-scale animal deaths from the massive tsunami at Yala Safari Game Lodge close to Yala Reserve Wildlife Park, southeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to notions they possess a "sixth sense" for disasters, experts said on Thursday.

Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.

The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards. "There has been a lot of anecdotal evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven," said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.

"There have been no specific studies because you can't really test it in a lab or field setting," he told Reuters.

Other authorities concurred with this assessment.

"Wildlife seem to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds ... there are many reports of birds detecting impending disasters," said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.

Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators.

The notion of an animal "sixth sense" -- or some other mythical power -- is an enduring one which the evidence on Sri Lanka's battered coast is likely to add to.

The Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster and many ancient cultures viewed elephants as sacred animals endowed with special powers or attributes.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday. It killed tens of thousands of people in Asia and East Africa.

The Aid is Making a Difference!

    Aid arriving for tsunami survivors

Military aircraft and trucks have started delivering food and medicine to tsunami survivors in the hardest-hit areas of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. Meanwhile, the death toll from the Indian Ocean tsunamis has climbed to at least 135,000 people.

Initial indications are that Diego Garcia was not affected by the Andaman Tsunami of 26 December 2004. It is located south of the tip of India, well with in range of what the tsunami, with a max elevation of 22 and an average elevation of only 4 feet. Civilians monitoring shortwave radio reported on rec.radio.shortwave that a female operator, in answer to a query from an aircraft after giving weather information, reported no ill effects from the earthquake.

Officials said the Diego Garcia Navy Support Facility, which houses about 1,700 military personnel and 1,500 civilian contractors, suffered no damage related to the earthquake and ensuing tsunamis. Personnel at the facility reported no unusual activity or problems over the weekend. Diego Garcia, the southernmost island in the Chagos Archipelago, sits about 1,000 miles south of India and roughly 2,000 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter. Even though an earthquake like Sunday’s will radiate destructive waves in all directions, the damage caused by the water differs greatly depending on the undersea topography.

Favorable ocean topography minimized the tsunami’s impact on the atoll. Diego Garcia is part of the Chagos Archipelago, situated on the southernmost part of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge. To the east lies the Chagos Trench, a 400 mile long, underwater canyon that ranges in depth from less than 1,00 meters below the surface to depths that plunge to over 5,000 meters. It is one of the deepest regions of the Indian Ocean. Diego Garcia is located to the west of Chagos Trench, which runs north and south. The depth of the Chagos Trench and grade to the shores does not allow for tsunamis to build before passing the atoll. The result of the earthquake was seen as a tidal surge estimated at six feet.

Tsunami runup at the point of impact will depend on how the energy is focused, the travel path of the tsunami waves, the coastal configuration, and the offshore topography. Small islands with steep slopes usually experience little runup - wave heights there are only slightly greater than on the open ocean. This is the reason that islands with steep-sided fringing or barrier reefs are only at moderate risk from tsunamis.
