Why does Brian Young play, "Eruption" live ?

I love Brian Young and Daves band, but it bothers me a bit whenever Brian Young does Eddie Van Halen's eruption solo. Shouldn't some material be sacred to Van Halen's legacy, rather than cheapen DLR's setlist with a generic version of eruption?

I mean, it was great for the atomic punks coverband.

I just think it's something that shouldn't be done live onstage, unless in fact it's Eddie Van Halen doing it.

I wanna see Brian Young make original music with Dave too, while i'm on the subject. It bothers me to see so much talent wasted on cover songs, when they should be recording kick ass original music!

apparently they have recorded a full albums worth of

new material, and it is up to Dave when to release it.

Dave is also planning a world tour in the near future, so

we should probably hear the new material prior to this.

    (thanks Carmine and Golden Boy)

Dave and his band have had "full albums" worth of material since the '99 tour ended.

Brian kicks Eddie's ass currently. He can play any of EVH's stuff he likes and it's OK with me. EVH is a bum and yesterday's news now. Fuck him!

    Yeah I know Eddie's a bum...

I'm just kinds scared that the 1998 DLR Band CD will be Dave's last rock album.

I don't think he plays "Eruption" at all WARF, close, but not that close....

Yes, it's "Eruption-esque", meaning it's in the same neighborhood, so to speak, as Eruption....

I think he plays it like that because of the general Van Halen feeling during Dave's setlist, but at the same time not a blatant attempt to play the solo note for note....

And I'm damn glad he doesn't try it.... Although I'm sure he can nail it, I've heard so many people fuck it up, I don't want to hear anyone other than Ed (with the original lineup present) play it again....

Just because it's instrumental, it's a song just the same. He's not copying Ed's whole solo or anything.

On the same note, Sam should NOT be singing Dave's songs live either let alone putting that shit on BOBW IMO.

Because dave is so drug-addled that his management has told him that he IS playing with Van Halen and he thinks that that's Eddie doing his bit.

If Young were to play anything else, dave would have an aneurysm on the spot.

Just kidding, but it is pretty lame. If I wanna hear Eruption, I can go down to my local Sam Ash and hear just about anyone there play it. For free.

This has been a subject of discussion since the '99 tour when Bart Walsh was playing "Eruption". People were pissed that he got up on stage and played that song note for note because they were Ed's notes. But on the other side of the coin, was/is it o.k. for Sam Hagar and Gary Cherone (during his brief tenure) to get up on stage and sing "Jump" word for word? After all, those are Dave's words, aren't they? Just like the notes in "Eruption" are Ed's because Ed wrote them, the words of "Jump" are Dave's because Dave wrote them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Turn-about is fair play. If Ed can hire someone to sing Dave's words, then Dave can hire someone to play Ed's notes. All is fair in love and war.

Eruption is to You Really Got Me as Eddie is to Beer.

Eruption is the part before YRGM, leads into it and goes hand in hand with it. It's how it was played, is played, and will be played. Young plays it to keep that going. However, he doesn't play it like Ed plays it live, by extending it out, playing whatever etc.

True....the way he plays it blew me away at the Rama Show! He fingertaps over the neck of the guitar like he's playing a piano! I kinda took it as a light mockery. As in, "this is very easy to play"......and I do it BETTER!

First, your welcome. Ray and Brian BOTH said they have tons of stuff waiting to release. They also kinda smiled at each other when I asked them.(???) I took from the conversation that, whatever it is, it will be HUGE! And for anyone who has heard this band live, it will absolutely ROCK! But, I also feel that the "delay" in releasing it may have something to do with an original band we all know and love possibly reconvening in 2006!

    Aw don't worry, it's a market timing/motivation thing currently.

Also if Brian was butchering EVH's stuff, I would be the first to trash the guy, as a musician.

Secondly, when Randy Rhodes died, a lot of musicians had a problem with Zakk Wylde doing Randy's stuff, but Zakk was so damn good, and it got Ozzy back out on the road, that it all worked for the better, even with Randy's mom.

Brian is no Zakk, but Eddie is no Randy, if you look at the big picture on the matter.

Brian is good for Diamond. EVH is a liability now, not an asset to Dave. I would not have said that until this 04 Tour disaster, on top of the 98 Tour disaster, and going to see a VanSpam Boy's 04 gig.

Van Halen as a band is closed history.

I want to hear 'Eruption' when I see Dave, especially on the last tour when it was sandwhiched between '...Devil' and 'You Really Got Me'.

I think it's a cliche now that at rock shows-the chances are you're gonna hear a guitar solo-if you're going to see someone play a load of Van Halen material-it might as well be 'Eruption'-it adds to nostalgia, as well, I suppose.

That's the problem i have with it, actuially!

It reinforces that Dave is no longer (and would rather be) with the band!

Leave it to memory, let Young play his own thing, and leave eruption out in the dump. phooey!

have you ever LISTENED to what brian is playing? or do you just read the setlists posted in reviews where everybody just writes "eruption" instead of "brian's solo"...

he mentioned in an interview that dave asked him to play a solo and to play HIS stuff and not a cover of eruption...and if you bother to take a listen to the boots (where everybody names it eruption, too) it's not even close to the original but brian shredding his own shit...

I didn't know shite about VH - III so I watched a full video I got of the 98 Tour stop in Sydney. Great vid/pro-shot as to quality.

First Cherone totally sucked. The guy was just horrible, and didn't fit the band at all.

Second, it was funny, it was wierd to me seeing Cherone do Hagar VH II songs, not Van Roth songs. I mean everyone covers Van Roth songs, but nobody covers Van Hagar songs.

I listened to a couple of 98 Tour audios and Cherone sucked bad on those also. I don't know much about Cherone's previous work with Extreme, but I never remember the guy sounding like shite, as he did with VH III.

If he can play it, then PLAY it! A gig is still a gig, he's still a guitarist, it still impresses the FUCK out of a lot of people. If he can play "Eruption" or anything with Eruption-esque overtones, then SWISH! If i were at a gig, that's be a really cool thing to see. Songs are there to be covered!

I have heard Young's solo. I think Tydhurst got it right with "eruption" overtones. I still would prefer it's own seperate, unique entity.

I even prefer when the band is jamming on "Birdland".

I've thought about it a bit, and here's my trouble with it:

With Brian Young even referencing "Eruption" during his solo slot, it simply reinforces the theory that right now a DLR live show is essentially a VH tribute band that just so happens to have as its front man...David Lee Roth.

Let's put it like this: the five or so minutes that Brian is jamming away, wouldn't that time be better spent performing "Experience" or "Big Trouble"?

(I know that Young's solo is Dave's op to catch a breath and a blowjob backstage and change outfits, but work with me here, and imagine dave just wearing one pair of pants for the duration of the show)

well, we all already know and agree on that. That's why we all hate him so.

But sammy sings/sang them in large part because a) the three musicians behind him are the guys who originally played the song, and b) a large part of the audience DOES show up to hear dave-era tunes at a VH show.

When I go see Dave on a solo tour, I have no expectations or desire to hear "Eruption". Why? Because a) Dave didn't perform on this tune, and b) I didn't go to hear someone do Ed licks (or something highyl influenced thereof), I'm there to see DAVE.

Think about it like this: it's one thing to sing the tunes, but if sammy did Dave's stage-raps verbatim, that would be an even deeper transgression, right?

i agree that eruption is sacred but brian i believe does justice to it. i have seen many tribute bands try it and almost all fail.

by the way how can i get a copy of that pic. dlr is fucking awesome.

dlr wore a pair of blue shinney pleather pants for the news years eve show. apparently no blow job. i have to disagree with you when you state that dlr is now just a tribute band. dlr has no other choice but to play with another band. ediie is a fucking baby. the choice is to have dlr front his band or have nothing at all.

ASCAP lists the composer of Eruption as:

Edward Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth.

What Brian Young is doing is a symbolic tribute. No one can ever steal Ed's star by playing that song, because the first thing anyone thinks of when they hear it is Ed. Besides, Brian's version is a simulation of Eruption, and a pretty damned good one at that.
