It is a form of compressed archive that does not lose any quality at all. Otherwise known as a "lossless" type of compression. You can take a .wav file in all of it's glory, and compress it into a really small file, much more suitable for trading over the internet.

Or in Lou (zer)'s case, downloading like Pron.
