Question Roth-era Van Halen: Do you think it OWNED the "ROCK" genre?

I was thinking about this after noticing the "Main VH" part of the suggestion title.

There were some pretty big acts lower on the US Fest totem pole.

Not to say there weren't viable acts out there during the "Roth-era Van Halen" period, but could anyone else claim the "Hard Rock" crown back in the day?

I say no, but I'm obviously somewhat biased.

they could have sold twice the amount of tickets had sammy been at the helm of the band back then. too bad he wasnt, although they did want him there before the release of the first album, according to alex. better late than never!

did they own the rock genre? no. to be fair, sammy didnt either, but once they got sammy and van halen TOGETHER, it all just kinda fell into place.

I can't find the band list of the New Wave day, at US Festival but I'm fairly sure Sammy Hagar did perform on New Wave Day, with the Clash headlining.

Most people don't recall it, but it was in fact a 3 day festival.

if only sammy and van halen had crossed paths back then, 1984 might have been a much, much better album than what it was.

age is relevant because of the fucking u.s. festival and who was old enough to be there. you insinuated i was - i was not - you were - i insinuated you were - my insinuation, erego, makes much more sense than yours.

is this easy enough to comprehend? never give a rothtard an inch for brains.

I think they owned the rock genre at the time.

The "Sammy would have if he'd been fronting van halen" argument is irrelavent. He wasn't there.

oh sure, and david lee roth was jesus christ reincarnated, invented a whole new religion that the entire world followed, moved mountains, saved the universe and lowered gas prices too. any more undue praise we can heap upon him?

maybe his voice aligned the planets and allowed for time travel to finally be perfected by a secret branch of the u.s. government, too. he fed hungry countries, healed the sick, raised the dead, and single handedly designed a future of peace and prosperity for every single human being from now to the end of time.

    fuckin a...

Yes, there was definately a time that Van Halen owned the crown.
It was never with that fat-ass either. I have a hard time even
classifying Van Hagar as Hard Rock.

hell yeah they owned! they didnt last to long as an opening act cuz headliners (sabbath ,journey etc...)got tired of people showing up for van halen instead of them and when they were headliners they had the worst opening acts ,no body wanted to open for van halen because nobody gave a shit about who was the opener! i saw the last 3 tours with dave and literally every body tailgated like crazy right up until van halen hit the stage ,sadly the opposite was true when alice in chains opened for van hagar everybody was there to see alice and thats all people were talking about before the show ,especially what badass's jerry and layne were !!!!

If you include either U2 or The Police as "rock" (who both asscended at EXACTLY the same time VH did, then it gets tricky.

As far as "hard rock", hell yeah. they dominated.

By the time Women and Children 1st came out, they were doing double nights at arenas...then on the Diver Down Tour you had double and triple sold out shows in America, and sold out Arena tours throughout South America...and by the time 1984 came out, they did triple nights at arenas in every major city...and in cases like NY and LA, they'd play 3 nights sold out at MSG and come back 3 months later for 3 sold-out shows at the Meadowlands, and then another couple sold out shows in Connecticutt. If there hadn't been such friction in the band on the 1984 tour, that would have EASILY been VH's first "Rolling Stones" type tour with sold out STADIUM shows all over the globe.

After the split, the two competing bands pretty much SPLIT their popularity square down the middle...for the competing EEAS album/tour and 5150 tour/album. If you include Dave's spanish sales of that record, EEAS pretty much equaled 5150...and his tour was more extensive (and better of course, but I'm just talking popularity).

if only sammy and van halen had crossed paths back then, 1984 might have been a much, much better album than what it was.
If that is the case why has 1984 been their best selling album of all time. Sammy had a chance to make it better 4 times and not one of his albums with VH has had the success of 1984. As a matter of fact with out 5150 1984 has sole than the other 3 studio releases added together. Dude, I like SH Van Halen, but get your head out of your ass. In 50 years nobody will remember When it's love, but they will remember Jump, Panana, and Hot For Teacher.

Back in the day CVH were giant killers. They gave knock out punches to Journey and Black Sabbath which was no easy task at the time. If they were not the top hard rock act back then, they never would have headlined the Us Festival. As far as Alex VH claiming they wanted Sammy Fatgar as their 1st singer is BULLSHIT. Ed and Al said that shit out of anger for Dave leaving VH. These young VanHagar fans fail to realize that early VH was a full frontal assault on all of your senses. Ed's over the top guitar work and Dave's flamboyant energetic style formed a well oiled machine that just rolled through town after town leaving behind complete devastation.
When Spam came on board he basically did what Ed told him to do, forming a comfort zone which appeared on stage and on the albums. I am not going to knock this Three Lock rock dude, he has a right to his opinion. But for crying out loud, do your homework before running your mouth.
I would recommend comparing some of the live performances between the two frontmen. There is footage of Unchained, On Fire and Dance The Night Away floating around. Compare the energy of these performance's to any live Van Hagar footage and you will see that DLR is the only singer for VanHalen. As for the U2 comparison, if Dave had stayed in the band they would be selling out Stadiums and giving U2 a run for the crown. Unfortunatley they just don't have that kind of clout with Hagar fronting the band. The proof was in last summer's BORE TOUR. They couldn't sell out a stadium with Hagar if they gave the ticket's away. And if the rumor's are correct, they will kill their legacy even more by opening for Aerosmith this Summer.

Did VH rule Hard Rock...yes after Zeppelin's crisis in '77 and then after Bonham died in '80 VH was it.....I am old enough to have been there...and I was...alive and aware in '78. Van Halen was THE real deal, the only ones who came close were Ozzy's Blizzard of Oz and albiet a distant 3rd, Rush's Moving Pictures. Remember the Knack was the new Big Band at the time. The US Festival didn't happen until '82 and Motley was already making waves then, along with all the others mentioned before.

    3-Lock:

You are obviously unaware of the accomplishments of the Roth-era Van Halen. There is no way Van Hagar was more successful than Roth's Van Halen. Please look at the existing data compiled by the music industry. These are undisputed facts.

I believe that since you were not born during that period you cannot comprehend how amazing was the Roth-era Van Halen. As a matter of fact, once Roth left Van Halen ceased to be Van Halen and had to resort to a journeyman like Sammy Hagar to continue playing to less than 1/5 of their talent and ability. The reason is simple: they do not have any other skills.

In summary, Roth's Van Halen is Van Halen, whereas Sammy fronting Van Hagar is a Tommy-2-Tone wannabe ensemble at best!!!

I'd probably include The Police and U2 in the popular music category.

Madonna was racing around back then too.

I cunt believe there wasn't a monters of schlock festival.

The problem is, none of the youth these days have ever witnessed an atomic bomb exploding on a stage.

Great call mentioning U2 and The Police. I saw The Police on the Ghost in the Machine tour. They fucking blew me away. Sting's ego, Stewarts drumming, and Andy's wonderful guitar work just blended into something fabulouse.

U2 certainly had the fire. Who can forget Live at Redrocks?

Van Halen really broke into the scene when disco was still the mainstream thing. I hated disco with a passion. A band like Van Halen wasn't mainstream popular in 1978. It was that band that helped kill off disco and bring back rock and roll. Punk, Van Halen, and Bruce saved us. LOL!
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

Bruce and the E Street Band...good call.
I think you also have to throw in AC/DC.

The Stones were popular too then, but by the mid-seventies their new music was really irrelevant - -they were popular then, but more nastolgia.

Those are your 5 biggest rock bands from about 77(fall of Led Zep and The Who)-85/86:
Bruce and the E Street Band
    The Police
    Van Halen
    U2
    AC/DC

    in about that order.
