As far as "hard rock", hell yeah. they dominated.
I'd probably include The Police and U2 in the popular music category.

Madonna was racing around back then too.

I cunt believe there wasn't a monters of schlock festival.

      COMPLETELY!

I tell the youngsters, "CLASSIC VAN HALEN were as BIG as G'N'R were, as METALLICA was, and U2 are....ANYBODY! And a MILLION times AS KEWL!!!!"

The problem is, none of the youth these days have ever witnessed an atomic bomb exploding on a stage.

Great call mentioning U2 and The Police. I saw The Police on the Ghost in the Machine tour. They fucking blew me away. Sting's ego, Stewarts drumming, and Andy's wonderful guitar work just blended into something fabulouse.

U2 certainly had the fire. Who can forget Live at Redrocks?

Van Halen really broke into the scene when disco was still the mainstream thing. I hated disco with a passion. A band like Van Halen wasn't mainstream popular in 1978. It was that band that helped kill off disco and bring back rock and roll. Punk, Van Halen, and Bruce saved us. LOL!
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

Bruce and the E Street Band...good call.
I think you also have to throw in AC/DC.

The Stones were popular too then, but by the mid-seventies their new music was really irrelevant - -they were popular then, but more nastolgia.

Those are your 5 biggest rock bands from about 77(fall of Led Zep and The Who)-85/86:
Bruce and the E Street Band
            The Police
            Van Halen
            U2
            AC/DC

            in about that order.

Most people don't recall it, but it was in fact a 3 day festival.

Not to say there weren't viable acts out there during the "Roth-era Van Halen" period, but could anyone else claim the "Hard Rock" crown back in the day?

I say no, but I'm obviously somewhat biased.
Van Halen is the king of hard rock.

They were a breakthrough in sound, image, recording style and stage performance.
