What do you all reckon the heaviest Van Halen song is ??
And to complement the choice, the softest ??
(If there is such a thing !)
Ive got some ideas but dont want to kill the thread before
it even starts....

man that is tough to narrow down to just one each.

Heaviest: I'm the One, Romeo Delight, Hang 'Em High
Softest: Secrets, Romeo Delight (the bridge), Dance the Night Away
I'm going to agree with House of Pain as probably the heaviest, at least as far as tonal quality goes. Followed by Sunday Afternoon In The Park. Lyrically, I'd say Mean Streats followed by Jump (any song that uses suicide as a main thematic element is pretty heavy in my book)
Lightest would be Secrets (very lite-fm sound), Big Bad Bill (bop jazz) or Could This Be Magic (frothy CCR swamp blues).
HEAVIEST - HOUSE OF PAIN
softest - secrets
TLC
You KNOW I got the blues.
Can you dig it?
Welcome to Massachusetts. Now get the FUCK out of my way!
Heaviest: AND THE CRADLE WILL ROCK...
Softest: IN A SIMPLE RHYME
I am not soft how dare you.
Achtung Baby I say, I say...

softest= push comes to shove

Heaviest. . .Loss of Control
Softest. . .Secrets
Keep on Rothing in the Free World
Heavy = Drop Dead Legs
Lite = Secrets
we seems to haves a consensus on Secrets...
Heaviest: Atomic Punk, ATBL, On Fire, House of pain, one foot out the door
Softest: Secrets, dancing in the streets, I'll wait, big bad bill.
Some parts of "So this is love" are pretty mellow, but then, once you settle into that E.Z. chair, that solo punches you in the face, kicks you out of the chair, and then rapes you. After the solo, you can get up, grab a cold one, sit back down and enjoy the rest of the song.
Heavy: fools
Soft: secrets(sorry secrets nothing again you,it's just about the song...soft but good!!!!!)
little french dreamer hate those Van Hagar backstage party!!

Heavy-- Panama
'softest'-- I'll Wait
Heaviest- Atomic Punk
Softest- Big Bad Bill or Secrets
Big Bad Bill ain't so soft...if it were played on electric guitar with the volume on stun, it would be apparent that the chords move fairly quick and it's up-tempo (taher than Secrets mid-tempo pace).
Same goes for "Could This Be Magic?"
Yeah, the clarinet thing got it lumped in there.Originally posted by academic punk

I got nothin' but love for vaudevillian remasters, but that clarinet sound ruins it.
It's like some redneck blowin' in an empty moonshine jug.
Now, "CTBM"....that has the whole damn the torpedos vibe that moppin' up that floor cunt fuck with.
Heavy - Romeo Delight/Unchained/Sinner's Swing
Soft = Angel Eyes

Fuck Scott Weiland. Fucking asshole. I get trashed all the time and still go to work. And my job sucks ass. -ODShowtime
Outta Love Again or On Fire. Both killer.
softer side of things... hmm... Big Bad Bill..?
"FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKIN' BITCH! WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE ANYWAYS? TALK TO ME LIKE THAT? FUCK YOU. DRAG QUEEN LOOKIN' WHORE- YOU AINT SHIT. YOUR THE FRECKLE TO THE LEFT OF MY BROWN EYE. NOW GO MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL...OH, PUT DAD ON THE PHONE"
Heavy - On Fire. Love Dave's falsetto on that one... kinda like Manowar. Alright, maybe I'm exageratting, but it fuckin' rules.
Soft - I'll Wait. Very poppy. One of me favorites, though.
Cheers! :bottle:
Dave sounds kinda forced in I'll Wait. I hate the synths too. One of Bill's fav's though! Manowar! Killer...
Oh yeah, and I love mullets too. Really.Originally posted by Big Troubles

Lots of cool responses
I was going to say
Heaviest: Light up the Sky
Softest: Secrets..
I'll wait is the beginning of the end musically for VH, but I really dig Dave's vocal on that.
Light up the Sky is one crazy mixed song. I mean that in the BEST way. Fast...Slow...great chorus awesome solo. I put it up there with Outta Love Again. and both are on my fav. album. II. I find VH2 to be one of the most underrated cvh albums ever. creative as a mo-fo.Originally posted by Panamark

atomic punk for me is the hardest song because it sounds very raw and "unpolished"...good to hear that dave has chosen that song for the last playlists!

Hmmmm, my opinion would be as follows;
Heavy; DOA, Unchained, Me Wise Magic because listen to how aggressive dave's vocals are. These are what I crank up with the windows down and speed above posted! *LOL*
Soft; Women In Love, Dance The Night Away, I'll Wait (but it seems too popish and that was a foreshadow of what we were about to be subjected to via Spammy McGee)
Water down the hatch!
