Question Metallica - Some Kind of Monster

Anyone catch this on VH1 last night ??

I caught bits and pieces, flipping back and forth between this and a ballgame...

Holy shit, just another indication that Metallica is dead and buried in the music world...

Sure, they can still put on a helluva show, and sure, even their latest bomb of a CD, St. Anger, went to #1, but obviously (if you've listened to it) that it was based on past success...

It is clearly apparent after watching this that:

    - They have completely lost touch with reality as a rock and roll band
    - They have absolutely no drive and no edge.... They're too worried about their inner feelings to make any decent music anymore....

I can surely understand and respect Hetfield's feelings about being more of a family man...

But Hetfield and his fellow egomanic Uhrich constantly going at each other, while Kirk just sits their laughing at them internally, is just sad when you consider how bad they've deteriorated...

The role of the therapist, making 40 GRAND A MONTH, just cracked me up....

40 grand...man oh man...I could not believe that.

I got a laugh out of Kirk's odd comment on not really having any input all those years...

Sorry, I thought it was a great, great movie. And I've thought they were out of touch for years. I also really grew to love ST. ANGER. It's edgy, totally different, and really new sounding...not based on past success or NU METAL.

As a big fan of documentaries, MONSTER is the best one I've seen in a while and actually turned me back into a Metallica fan.

I saw that pile of shite last night!

    Impressionss:

    1)-METALLICA died with Cliff Burton.

2)-Hetfield couldn't write a Kewl lyric if his life depended on it.

3)- LARS.....Suspicion confirmed. Raging Megalomaniac. Complete ASSHOLE.

4)-Kirk STILL has no say in the band.

5)-Jason Newkid is the only person with an ounce of INTEGRITY in this film.

6)-DAVE MUSTAINE FUCKING RULES! ROCK ON DAVE!!!

    6)- BOB COCKSUKING ROCK.
WHEN DID THIS FUCK BECOME A MEMBER OF METALLICA?!?

I thought it was great, unflinching.

For a band in their position, and with their fan base, it was a pretty bold move to film them discussing thier "inner feelings" and whatnot.

That's the equivalent of Joni Mitchell releasing a documentary of her going out and hunting deer with Ted Nugent and eating their kill raw and bloody right there in the wild.

    Let me clarify my position...

I too am a big fan of documentaries, so in that sense, yes I enjoyed it as well.... I think I've watched every rock episode of "Behind the Music"....

My problem is with the attitudes displayed by James and Lars...

Look at the footage from the "Kill 'Em All" days, and then fast-forward to those Dr. Philamaniacs....

Yes, but they were also young alcoholics that surpressed half their emotions are problems with alcohol. The documentary literally captures these guys as they come apart after years of denying that anything is wrong. When Jason left, the band suddenly realized they were fucking assholes. That's what I love about the film...it shows James and Lars really realize that they are fucking assholes. It doesn't show them suddenly become feeling-needy...it really is about them realizing their problems, lack of discipline and capability to be major assholes. I think it's a helluva piece of work.

(I must say I also think ST. ANGER is the best album they made since JUSTICE...I don't really like the Snake album very much anymore...just too commercial and not enough substance...)

Why is that odd? It's well known that he didn't have any part in writing the music. He was told what to play and when to play it - period.

The sad thing about that is that Kirk was the main impetus behind the "Enter Sandman" riff.

He borught it in, and Lars suggested playing the first half of the riff three times before hitting the last half.

The Black Album was also the first time he really was permitted to create his own solos. Previously, as James has said, they were basically standing over him, and specifying, "Hey, why are you playing that note? We didn't write this song for you to play that note. Lose it."

I think by the end of the film, when they turn on the therapist, you see metallica back to normal. James & Lars in complete control, everybody else fuck off.

Uninspired millionaires, well past their prime.

"St. Anger" is the first metallica recording on which I liked ZERO songs.
I use it for a coaster. Demos that should have been fleshed out AND SOLOS ADDED.
It's the JAMES & LARS show. Kirk is not even present. These clowns learned NOTHING from Jason bailing out after 15 years.

They no longer set trends, they follow them. They were WELL aware that not having solos would be following in the footsteps of all the kiddie bands who can't play, yet they followed suit. Must have needed more dough to keep up the art collection.

Actually, that's the opposite of the truth. Brilliant albums like PUPPETS and LIGHTNING were 100% the product of Lars' and James' thinking with few exceptions. ST. ANGER is Metallica's first group-written album. Kirk contributes more to this one than any other. He even wrote a lot of the lyrics, including that "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle" line that I use in my sig. The only problem I have with this seriously heavy album is the complete lack of solos. I will admit that that sucks. But the album itself was written, arranged by James, Lars, Kirk and stand-in bass player Bob Rock. All interviews at the time and the DVD extra features demonstrate this over and over again.

From what I saw of it (and I could only grab bits and pieces, because my wife owns the remote and she hates anything that has to do with rock/metal music period), I thought it was a very well done flick - and I thought that Metallica essentially confirmed everybody's suspicions about them over the last few years. Namely -

    1 - They may as well re-named themselves the Bob Rock Band;

    2 - They are totally disassociated from reality;

    3 - The music is lost, period...it's not coming back, either;

    4 - They're all a bunch of egomaniacal, self-centered assholes (Lars especially).

None of those revelations came as any great surprise to me, personally. I will say this about St. Anger - there were a FEW elements to it that I thought were somewhat edgy and different, and it DID originally have a lot of potential and could have been an outstanding album. I don't agree with the drum sound  that made it to the mix, though, and the fact that there doesn't seem to be one real GUITAR SOLO (how's it feel being a puppet, Kirk?) on the whole album kinda wrecks it for me.

But it HAD potential at first, I'll give it that. Generally speaking, I think the blame falls on Bob Rock for the butchered up production and some of the stranger ideas that came to light, but...

Metallica's prime is far, far past them, of that there's little doubt even to the most diehard Metallica fan, but Some Kind of Monster was a pretty well put together documentary, no arguing that.

I'll admit, the KIRK comment is overboard. He got song writing credit on every song on ST. ANGER.

CLIFF BURTON's influence is ALL over KILL, RIDE, & Master. The harmony guitar, the classical acoustic guitar, the structuring of songs, and the PUNK influence all came from CLIFF. He encouraged James & helped him structure MANY of the guitar parts in early METALLICA.

He was the heart and soul of that band.
CLIFF 'EM ALL has brief but brilliant moments where CLIFF expresses the NO BULLSHIT & NO Pretentious Attitude that was METALLICAs hallmark in the early days.

It is sad to see ANOTHER classic band laid low by ego & self delusion.

Well, if you look at the credits on all of their albums, Kirk gets alot of songwriting credits....

Yes. But near the beginning of the movie, the band declares that from now on, they will all write the albums. And they do. Lyrics, music...everything. And I hate to say this, but ROB TRUJILLO is a better bass player than JASON NEWSTED. The man is amazing...all the way back to his SUICIDAL TENDENCIES days.

ST. ANGER is thrash metal, total Metallica...with no commercialism...just pure aggression. FRANTIC is my favorite METALLICA song since BLACKENED.

I gotta agree with Matt. No solos. A drum sound like Lars is beating on a porcelin toilet seat. WTF? I could really care less who writes the lyrics. So they're angry. Hardly groundbreaking. They've become a very bad Korn tribute band. Sad but true as James would say. I don't get these guys anymore. I guess they're just so screwed up this is the best we can expect.

    No biggie. Megadeth is touring.

Watched this with Sweetsecrets a few weeks back, the highlight to me
was Dave Mustaine. (and the all too brief footage of the original
    Metallica, with Dave)

As for St Anger, as soon as I realized there was no solos.
    That was it for me..

Why bother ?? The most magical moments in Metallica's earlier
music was the literal metal symphonies of the melodic multilayer
guitar parts, with Kirks soloing over the top..

    The new Lineup ??

Hey I think Robert Trujillo was a great choice. However, can you
imagine if they got Dave Mustaine back and had a dual guitar attack with Kirk and Mustaine ??? Now *THAT* would be interesting to watch !
Not to mention the physco personality dynamics that would be going
    down.

Unfortunately thats as elusive as the Van Halen reunion...

Documentary was cool, but I did find it draining to watch the whole
thing. But Im a hyperactive fucker and its hard for me to focus on
shit like that for too long.. Worth seeing if you like Metal or
    Metallica..

Dave was so regretful and sad. Jesus.

Lars had to look away to keep from laffin at him!

    What a cock.

It really seems like James wants to hang it up.

And why not? They all have eleventy billion dollars.

What was that quote by Newstead years back, defending whether or not Metallica were sellouts....

"Yes, we sell out. Every show we play, anywhere we play."

    Damn near a Rothism.

Eleventy billion dollars is a lot of money, 'tis true.

And so what if they sell out every night? I hated that comment back then and I hate it still. McDonalds sells eleventy billion Big Macs a day, that doesn't make it healthy or worth ingesting. Much like Metallica's music.

And, more over, McDonalds does it on name alone, much like McTallica does.

McTallica...I swear to Christ I'm starting a cover band called McTallica and we're playing NOTHING but material from "Load" to "St. Anger".

    HA!

St. Anger totally sucked ass. It sounded like Lars was beating on trash cans for a hour!!

James and Lars knew they pushed Jason away, but didn't want him back in the band....what the fuck was that about?

I just watched 20 minutes of this movie and turned it off. FUCK METALLICA. AND DOUBLE FUCK LARS. What a whiney bunch of bitches. Those guys are such pussies Kotex should sponsor they're next tour.

I've been working on a documentary for the past three years by myself - no crew - just a one man band out of my own pocket using station gear. The content and access that these guys got was unbelievable. The band was in on it. It was nothing but a commercial for the band and their shitty St. Anger CD. I'm done with them. I've actually been done with them since 1988.

What a waste of 20 minutes. I'm debating on giving it a second chance...but I don't see it happening.

I hated the way the drums sounded on St. Anger...it sounds almost like Lars is playing one of those metal barrels the reggae drummers play in Jamaica.

It's because he turned his snare head off. Actually, I liked the drum sound...kind of new, more metallic.

Talked about it with a friend last nite. After asking him if he watched it, he cuts me off and says...

"First of all, Kirk Hammet is clearly gay." LMAO

I thought SKOM was an honest snapshot of a band that has grown into something far removed from what it once was.

There is no going back to Ride or Master; those guys no longer exist - they have grown into something different. Good or bad, it is the natural progression of life. None of us are the same as we were in high school - why should we expect Metallica to stay stuck in the past?

Do I still think they have good music left in them? Maybe. Do I think James has gone soft? Yes. Do I feel that Lars is an ego out of control? Sure. But you know what? Money changes people. And I for one would sell out my roots for the freedom that comes with Metalli-money.

Mezro...and all of you would too...so stop bitching...it comes across as sour grapes...

    Hold on a second ....

Are none of you seeing the ego displayed by James just as much as Lars ???

Just a guess, but I'd bet that Jason left much more because of James than Lars....

Watched this the other day and thought it was a brilliant insight into a great band who doesn't know how to be great anymore.
They look completely lost and it came out on that album.
Have to agree also that Bob Rock came off looking like a tool in this also,I always thought he'd be cooler than that.
