Is Michael Anthony the Key to the Van Halen Mess??

Here is my point. This guy has been with vh since the mid seventies. Was there before the brothers were famous. These days he is seen as the silent one,almost like a hired bass player. Don't you think if he were more outspoken it would benefit VH and us fans. Because if the sisters see this(mikes being more outspoken and having a say in projects) they would feel more powerless than they actually are.

Another reason Mike could actually be a key is that Mike is very close to Spammy. That all but spells disaster for any chance of the original 4 to reunite as the once mighty Van Halen. The Mike and Sam bond
only hurts the Dave return!!

Let me put this to you in terms you can plainly understand,

"No"!

Mike's level of control in the band has always been at a level less than "0" and let's not kid ourselves. By all accounts a great guy but he is not an individual who weilds control, whether it be social or musical, to any extent.

The only thing that would be gained, by Mikey takin' and attempting to exert influence would be you own level of knowledge concerning the particualrs. Van Halen is enough of a three ring circus and this would simply add a new element. I've heard enough. These millionaires can either put up or shut up!

Yes. The ability to hold down and pick 'E' for extended periods of time...

Although, I will say I downloaded Mike doing his John Entwistle impression on a live cover of "Summertime Blues" and was mildly impressed.

I just don't understand what happened to Mike. I know we all mature eventually (or most of us do), but how could he go from being so badass in the early days, to being so lame now with his preference forall things Sammy and his brand of cheese rock.

Although Mike has little say or influence, he is essential for a CVH reunion.

I don't think Mike is the key to much really. Yes he has bondage with Sammy... sorry bonds, but what is really messing up a reunion is the twisted jealousy of 1 man: Alex Van Halen.

Now the thing here is that Ed could bring Dave back, but he can't/won't or is incapable of standing up to his brother (although just standing up seems to be a challenge for Ed these days).

Nah, you can tell by Michael Anthony's solos that he isn't a virtuoso. Bad effects aside, none of his notes flow very well, and if he ever improvises during a song it's either terribly messy or mediocre!

Let's get this straight: In terms of technique, Anthony is not a stellar bass player. It doesn't take that much skill to play what he does, and anyone claiming it does either doesn't play themselves or does play but isn't very good at it. What Mike played fit in well with the overall sound of the band, but he ain't no Jaco Pastorius.

Yeah, Mike and Sam hanging out may have, to a degree, helped smooth the way for Sam to get back with the band last year, but it wasn't the deciding factor. Tend to agree that Mike doesn't have much input with the band. Doubt he ever did, really.

The key to the current state Van Halen is in would be the Van Halens, not Anthony.

The only shot they have at salvaging what's left of their career and ending it on a positive note goes by the name Roth, and even Dave's participation isn't gonna guarantee some worthwhile output from Van Halen at this point.

The sisters should have taken their reunion with Dave in 1996 all the way; full-length new album from reunited classic lineup, couple years of touring, then retired the band name.

Can't imagine anyone would say what they've done since the two Roth tracks on BOV1 was anything worthy of the name Van Halen. Shit, even if I were a sheep I'd be offended by what's been happening under the name Van Halen since 1996.

No Jaco...that had me chuckling. I am a bass player and really admire Hamm, Jaco, Sting, Squire, Sheehan, Wimbish, and Flea. Bassplayer isn't capable of carrying any one of those I mentioned guitar cases!

I laugh when people actually think he's great. Just for shits and giggles they should go to a tab site like MXtabs and look at some VH bass tabs and compare them to the ones I mentioned.

I hope they do and get back with us. Bassplayer is a tool, and a used tool at best!

The perception of Mike being a silent partner just along for the ride is a misperception. Michael has all along expressed his input to the band and it's business. He's just never taken much of a public spokesperson role and left that to Dave, Ed and Spammy.

For bands that make the long haul and survive over a long period of time it takes members that are the foundation, steady and stable. Mike and Alex to some degree have been that stability element that enabled Dave and Ed to go out to the bleeding edge. Hagar just bled...

Michael's quiet aspects to the public are just an element of his personality and choice to keep the business aspects "in-house" per se. For the most part that's a smart move given how volitile this band has been at times.

Mikey's solo's are the first deleted if I want to pair down a VH boot onto one disc. Shit, sometimes his "solos" are deleted even if I have extra space left over on two discs.

No Jaco...that had me chuckling. I am a bass player and really admire Hamm, Jaco, Sting, Squire, Sheehan, Wimbish, and Flea. Bassplayer isn't capable of carrying any one of those I mentioned guitar cases!

I laugh when people actually think he's great. Just for shits and giggles they should go to a tab site like MXtabs and look at some VH bass tabs and compare them to the ones I mentioned.

With Anthony, there was never even the NEED for him to play complex passages, because just what Ed was doing ALONE was more than enough to fill the sound. The only track that ever stood out to me, basswise, was Push Comes To Shove. The next track, So This Is Love, displayed what Anthony was good at: laying down a groove for Ed to play over.

Mike may have been more involved in the decision-making process than I imagined. Doubt that's true now, as he has said he was out of contact with the Van Halens for a couple of years prior to 2004. The internal workings of the band are more a subject of speculation than fact.

But it always struck me odd that people would say Mike was an amazing bass player, or Al was one of the top drummers of all time. 'Specially when it came from people who say they actually play. If Anthony and AVH are actually among the greats at their instruments, even talking strictly in the rock milieu, then my standards of greatness are too high in comparison.

Mike is the problem in as much as he has a stronger bond with spammy then he does with Dave. The real problem child is Alex. There is some real friction between Al and Dave and it goes way back. Lots of rumors as to what it is over but only the two of them know for sure. I think Ed and Dave would get along just great if the other two would stay away. That would be fine with me as Dave and Ed are the two that made the magic happen in that band any way.

Al is the key to this mess, which is funny because if not for Ed, Al would probably be starring in gay porn nowadays--Ed should stand up to Al and get Dave back in the band. Hell, Ed and Dave could tour with a different drummer AND bassist and do just fine
