'Doonesbury' Offers $10,000 for Proof Bush Served
Thu Feb 26, 8:12 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) has an unlikely ally in his effort to show that he did his National Guard duty during the Vietnam War: the often political and frequently irreverent "Doonesbury" comic strip.

The strip is offering $10,000 to anyone who can show Bush served in the Alabama Air National Guard.

"That's right -- we're offering $10,000 cash to anyone who can prove George W. Bush fulfilled his Guard duty in Alabama," Wednesday's strip said. "So if you served with Mr. Bush -- even if only in the officers' club -- we want to hear from you right now!"

Readers are referred to the Web site doonesbury.com, where a Witness Registration Form asks for online testimony. The site says the prize money is being underwritten by Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau. "Thanks to Bush's massive tax cuts for people who don't need them, GBT is flush."

The hitch is the winner will not actually receive the reward. Instead the Web site says the cash will be donated in the winner's name to the United Service Organization (USO), which entertains American troops.

The strip first offered the reward on Monday and already there are hundreds of responses, according to David Stanford, duty officer at the online Doonesbury Town Hall.

"We're only in day three and have already received witness forms from over 600 contestants, with more streaming in every hour," Stanford said in an e-mail response to questions.

"We'll be carefully processing all of them, but what's immediately striking is that so many who've plunged into the depths of their 1972 memories have surfaced with accounts that involve automobiles, alcohol, aliens, secret ops and Elvis," Stanford said.

The White House had no comment on the contest, but Christine Iverson of the Republican National Committee (news - web sites) said laughingly, "It sounds like a stunt worthy of a comic strip."

Documents released earlier this month offered no new evidence to show that Bush actually turned up for National Guard duty in Alabama during the latter part of 1972, a period when Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) chairman Terry McAuliffe has accused him of being absent without leave.

So the dink's gonna be writing a check to the whitehouse itself? They provided everything asked and more. But of course there will never be "enough" evidence, will there?

I'll bet I'd have a hard time proving every day of my military service, and I just got out 4 years ago.

You could probably get in touch with your Air Force buddies without much effort though, right?

Uh, a couple more have come out recently... I think Lucky's posted the stories...

And seriously, let's compare the two candidates' history. Look at Kerry's behavior post Vietnam. It's disgraceful at best. I also don't understand how you can crucify Bush over this Guard story, but defend Dean tooth and nail when he admitted he dodged service. And I've watched you defend Clinton on the very same issue. Now, I know you're no fan of Kerry's, so maybe the better comparison is between Bush and Dean. If you're convinced the Bush story is true, how can you be offended by this and not by Dean's deferment (3 days before the now infamous ski trip)? Come on man, you're letting hatred for Bush cloud your judgement.

I know, and we really shouldn't be helping them out of this funk...

Hell, let them self-destruct. They don't seem to want to listen to anyone or acknowledge what really happened to Dean. So fuck it.

Actually, I do understand all too clearly the position their party's in. Socialism has been rejected, yet they still want to institute it. They can't go on TV and state their true intentions, so they have to create controversy in hopes of winning by taking down their opponents. It's kinda par for the course with socialists anyway. They never try to elevate the "downtrodden", intead they drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator. They're in the business of spreading misery equally. So it should be no surprise that this campaign is going this way.

What's gonna be great is the looks on the various talking heads on election day, when Kerry loses by a 10% or greater margin.

Honestly, with this Mel Gibson movie making such an impact i will guarentee that this will be the year the Christian moves the vote.

Look for a landslide victory over Kerry in Nov.
I got one of those feelings again and it is hardly ever wrong.

This whole gay marriage issue couldn't have been better timed actually. The majority of Americans do not support Gay Unions and all this stuff is just rattling around the believers mind and i have a feeling that will also motivate voters to go to the polls.

I hope you're right, although I'm not so sure. More and more is being accepted as normal these days.
You know, like, they can say G*ddamn on t.v., but "shit" is still a dirty word.
There are at least five on this board, that I can think of, that have no problem putting the bible on the same shelf as there collection of fairy tales. We even have one on here who even names his character after the son of God, will then pompusley use him to tell how evil you are for supporting a fraudulant chreminal empire, and then will go back to his own Fit On Republican Day character, and cuss you out.
    I don't know.

no way. bush may win, but it won't be a landslide.

even with nader, last time, bush lost the popular vote. (don't worry, i still think he's the valid president)

i don't think the iraqi situation and the economy are nearly as bad as a lot of the chicken littles out there are screaming. (and the national guard "issue" should be nothing of the kind.)

but nonetheless, my strong guess is a close election. bush may very well win the popular vote, as well as the electoral. but it won't be by more than 4%. and likely closer. that's got the knuckleboner guarantee!

I give him 10%, but of course that's subject to his base's turnout. Believe it or not, I see the swing vote as solidly Bush's.

    10%, eh?

nader got 2.6% in 2000. he doesn't do as well as an independent this time around. but i'll give him 2%. an extra 1% for "other."

meaning bush 53.5% to kerry 43.5%? nah. too high.

if bush wins the popular vote, he wins by 4% tops. and i'm thinking probably closer to 2.5%...

Anything's possible. But I don't see Kerry as a candidate that will motivate masses of people to vote for him rather than staying home.

That's a good comparison. Algore should've walked away with the Presidency, yet lost because of his "exciting" personality. With Kerry taking on an incumbant, I expect the margin to widen a bit.

Pinky, why even keep it in the house then? Just give it to someone who will use it and doesn't have one.

Anyway, I'll go with 10% and/or more just based on what is going on in this country right now.
You have to understand that with everything in the social climate right now that has really never been there before, everyone is thinking about morality and that will cause feelings of guilt and responsibility.

I can say this based on the number of people flooding to see The Passion that are coming out in shock.
Mel Gibson did something here that means more than any of us even know. He made Jesus a human being for 2 hours and 6 minutes.
Sorry but even the most dedicated person of faith has never gotten that from reading the bible.
reading and imagining what went down compared to a graphic depiction of it is a whole new ball of wax for us earth dwellers. and although he did take some artistic liberty with small parts of it. it is pretty much lifted right from the pages of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Im telling you and you can mark my words, the believers are goin to the polls in Nov. and they will have alot on their minds when they step into that voting booth.
last election, 49% of the christian base went to the polls. If that number hits 55-60%........Landslide Victory for Bush.

Come back to this thread after the election and either tell me i was right, or tell me you told me so.....I feel really confident about this whole scenario and everything i learned in Psych class is telling me this will be the year of the mortality vote cause everyone who knows christ is questioning theirs right now...

You think everyone is going to go to the polls over a movie??Hollywood is pretty good at propaganda, but unless they spiked the 7-Up at the theater with some pretty heavy mind control drugs, I doubt it will change anything.

    Besides, true Christians vote Nader.

I'll jump on the prediction bandwagon...

Remember that this is just a rough estimate..

    Nader 45%
    Kerry 26%
    Buchanan 4%
    Shrub 24%

    :p

I swear, do people even read my posts?
It amazes me how little of my point even finds its way into ones brain pan.
Funny how Conservatives seem to be the only ones who ever get it.
I don't know what side you sit on but i know it sure isn't the Right.

Oh, and The Passion is not a Hollywood film, they rejected it, remember?
Not to mention that it is based on FACTS, ooops, there's that word again. But that doesn't concern you so don't worry about that.

The current Social Climate is what will be taking people to the polls, and it sure won't be to elect Nader, sweet cheeks. His mere 4% last time out should make that loud and clear to you.
Many things are working here and it will lead to Bush winning as i said, by a landslide.

You can make your predictions and we'll meet back here in Nov.
If i am wrong or off the mark i'll gladly give credit where credit is due.

LOL, people will rush to the polls over a movie. You actually thought that was what i was saying?
Oh that's priceless and proof that blinders should not be warn by Liberal minded people. The subject of Jesus is a gret deal bigger than a movie.
Millions of people around the world are thinking about Jesus right now, when is the last time that happened? has it ever happened before?
It will do just as i stated and nothing more. It will have people questioning their own mortality and that my dear WILL be reflected in the votes.
But spin it however it makes you more comfortable.

Oh, give me a break. The Passion Of The Christ is not a Hollywood film? Who is Mel Gibson? Some average guy from off the street? It's had as much, if not more publicity than any Hollywood film out there from the same Hollywood hack promotion shows from the start. This has the markings of a capitalist marketing ploy all over it.

Make your points more clearer next time. I'm not a mind-reader. I could have sworn you predicted a rise in conservatism over a HOLLYWOOD movie. Exhibit A:

"Honestly, with this Mel Gibson movie making such an impact i will guarentee that this will be the year the Christian moves the vote."

And I predict that Zeus is going to make a comeback through radio ads.

    more clearer?
And your giving me advice on expressing my opinion?

    Don't be so angry sweetheart.
But you know what, Mel's movie had to be produced and released through somewhat "Undergorund" vehicles because Hollywood wouldn't touch it due to its subject matter.
Which by the way is what actually makes it such an attractive project to witness.

Honestly, it seems to me that many points together in one post make up an opinion. sure things can read as you want them to read if you take any single part of it out of context. but thats your right and i'll be happy to spell things out for the comprehension impaired if they have trouble understanding anything i type.

Oh, and i predict Zeus will be as Fictional tomorrow as he is today....
You take care now and have a great life, buh bye........

Blasphemy!! Zeus is real! Convert now or face the lightning bolt!

I've read that in a book and seen it in a few Hollywood movies, so it must be true...
