Ok, I was on spring break in Mazatlan Mexico in march of 1998. It was the last of the trip, and I was VERY hungover after 6 straight days of binge drinking. As I'm waiting for the bus to take me to the airport, the world premiere of Van Halen's "Without You" video is on MTV in the hotel lobby. I ran to the bathroom and let out a huge "Power Puke" the one I was waiting for..I felt great after that. Thanks Van Halen for for the shit song & Video in '98!

Without You is one nasty song. The video is pure puke. Eddie in some snowboarding joker hat looking stupid and Cherone squaking all over the place. Even the chick in the video is ugly. Shit, they are suppossed to be in some Swedish or Finish ice hotel. Bring on the Scandinavian beauties!!!!. Van Halen fucks everything up.

Gotta defend Gary here. That poor guy had his career almost ruined. Why? Everyone says "Gary destroyed what was left of Van Halen." Gary didn't. EVH did. He had complete control over that album. He wrote all the music. He even engineered the damn thing, I think. The crappy vocal sound is EVH's fault. A little reverb would have worked wonders. Hagar's voice was never without it. He loved Gary's lyrics. If he didn't want them (or Gary), he could have said "This will not do." Ed, though, said "We're musical soulmates." Musical soulmates? How much of a soulmate was Gary when the album didn't do so well? AVH said, on the 2004 tour, that Gary was a "mistake," etc. His era's live shows included more CVH (and more interesting CVH song selections) than Sammy's ever have. He put in 100% and was willing to try everything. Really, he can only be judged negatively by VH3 -- the album -- because it seems everyone who saw the tour walked away a believer. They realised that if Dave wasn't coming back, Gary was the right man for the band because he'd sing Dave's songs in concert and would be willing to try to please everyone. Unlike Sammy, Gary didn't want to pretend that the Dave era wasn't incredibly popular. He knew it and, dare I say it, embraced it. Anyway, AVH must mean Gary was a mistake because the album wasn't good. This album, though, was one that EVH said was the best work they'd done up to that point. I realise he has said that about every album, but still...

Anyway, the point of this rant is just to defend Gary (even though nobody really attacked him) and point out that the brothers screwed up yet AGAIN. Gary's a musical soulmate and then he's a mistake? What? I think VH3 is a good album. At least it's different. I like it better than all the Van Hagar albums. I think Van Halen would have more credibility now if they'd just stuck with Gary rather than having him leave and eventually replacing him with Sammy after years of silence. With Gary, they probably could have had some Gold albums and popular tours. VH3's followup would have been interesting. Without Dave, that's probably the best they'd ever get anyway. They might as well get it with some dignity and/or credibility.

Everyone says Dave is living like it's 1984. I don't think that's true. EVH is living like he's still in the '80s. He's drinking, smoking, and believing that no matter what, the fans will love him.
