Disagree. Dave, Ed, Al and MA were there from the ground up, the Mike Stone years excepted. Have no use for what Ed and company did after Dave left in 1985, but that doesn't diminish their contributions to CVH.
Goes double for EVH. Took what Ed did guitar-wise COUPLED with Daves vocals and lyrics to make Van Halen what it was. Mike and Al had their places in the classic lineup, and filled their roles more than sufficiently. Could Van Halen have been a success if Dave hadn't been there from the get-go? Is it possible Dave would have hit the big-time without EVH? Likely that Dave and Ed would have come up with stuff that was great even if AVH and MA weren't filling the rhythm slots? Maybe. Maybe not. Who can give a definitive answer about past hypotheticals.
Definitely think Van Halen was better off when Roth was in it. CVH is the only version of Van Halen that has any resonance, far as I'm concerned. 'Van Halen' with Hagar was a different direction, one that proved to be of no interest to many who dug CVH, that's for sure.

Eddie tried to prove Dave was'nt a big part of the band and Eddie really did'nt get anywhere with that mission in my opinion. Dave pushed VH to the limits, especially guitar wise. Eddie just does'nt have the killer edge he did with Dave. To be honest it's sad, none of the other singers compared at all. The CVH is where Van Halen was born. Sammy, 'your name here', all the cookie cutter singers could not and still cannot replace the raw magic that Van Halen was with Dave and everybody knows it, they just won't admit it. Guitarists used to be afraid of Van Halen riffs, now, Eddie's just another passing thing and that sucks. I never played eruption because of respect for the pure genius that came out of VH and Dave was a big part of driving Eddie to unbelievable musicianship. Now it's gone and that blows, I thought VH had more fretboard ideas for inspiration. Just goes to show that attitude and personna have alot to do with motivation. Dave provided the atmosphere and it shows to this day!!
Dave, Eddie, you guys need to do this for the fans. The imposter front men are really killing the VH image. Dave, you taught me that guitar is'nt everything just by seeing how VH played out afterward.
Guitarists need a delivery man and you are it, there is no one else in my opinion, thanks for the greatest CD's rock fans have ever heard, you put out what the fans needed even though VH was'nt there. Thanks for giving us our money's worth Dave, you are the man on a historic level!!!!!!!!!!!!
