  • Winslow injured in motorcycle accident

    May 2, 2005

WESTLAKE, Ohio (AP) -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident, but the team said his injuries aren't life-threatening.

Winslow was riding in a community college parking lot Sunday when he hit a curb at about 35 mph and was thrown from the motorcycle, police Lt. Ray Arcuri said.

He was taken by ambulance to Fairview Hospital and was scheduled to be transferred to the Cleveland Clinic on Monday where the team's medical staff would treat him, Browns spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz said.

``He went over the handlebars and was real evasive about what the injuries were,'' Arcuri said.

Winslow was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't strapped on and flew off his head, Arcuri said. He and four other men were riding motorcycles in the parking lot, not far from Winslow's home.

The first-round draft pick missed nearly all of his rookie year after breaking his leg in the second game of the season. He has had two operations on the leg.

Do you have the feeling that the Browns management are saying to each other, "what did we get into ourselves into with this guy" ???

I love it. What a crybaby pussy.

Will we ever see "THE TIGHT END OF THE FUTURE?"

I used to love the Browns too, at least the original team before they moved to B-more. Now, not so much.

That whole Kelly Holcombe, Tim Couch thing turned me on them.

Not to mention the performance clauses that WON'T kick and the fact that it was written into his deal about "dangerous activities", such as riding motorcycles.

According to the Rumor Mill, they could be looking for a refund, as it isn't certain that he will even play in '05.

            POSTED 10:28 p.m. EDT, May 2, 2005, from profootballtalk.com, The Rumor Mill

WINSLOW TO LOSE MORE THAN $9 MILLION?

Setting aside for now the question of whether Browns tight end "Evel Kellenievel" Winslow should have been riding a motorcycle as he still rehabs from a broken leg that scuttled his 2004 rookie season (and prevented him from earning a big-money bonus payment by failing to participate in 30 percent of the team's offensive snaps), we've gotten a look-see at Winslow's contract, which indicates that he shouldn't have been riding a motorcycle at all. Ever. Period.

As a general matter, Winslow has breached Paragraph 3 of his contract, which prevents him from "engag[ing] in any activity other than football which may involve a significant risk of personal injury."

And this breach could have significant consequences. Winslow's motorcycling allows the team (if it so chooses) to recover $5 million of his initial signing bonus and the full $4.4125 million of his option bonus triggered at the outset of the 2005 league year, $2.4125 million of which won't actually be paid to Winslow until July 15.

So the total potential price tag on Winslow's deliberate failure to comply with the terms of his contract is a whopping $9.4125 million.

Under the contract, Winslow becomes potentially responsible to pay back the bonus money due to "injury as a result of a breach of Paragraph 3 of the Contract" or "as a result of participation in hazardous activities which involve a significant risk of personal injury and are non-football in nature, including but not limited to skydiving, hang gliding, mountain climbing, auto racing, motorcycling, scuba diving, or skiing." (Emphasis added.)

The bottom line is that, under the terms of Winslow's deal, getting injured while motorcycling is no different that walking away from his contractual obligations, a la Ricky Williams did nearly a year ago.

In either case, the club can recover bonus money.

And in Winslow's case, he could end up forking over more than $9 million.

The bigger question is whether the Browns should make a grab for Winslow's $9 million. Since the guy that drafted Winslow is long gone and given that we can't imagine Winslow and 2005 first-round pick Braylon Edwards co-existing in the same conference much less in the same locker room, we think the Browns should send Winslow a bill for $9.4125 million, and then let nature take its course.

If nothing else, such a move could help the Browns recoup a major chunk of Butch Davis' buyout.

nah. if Lerner really needs the money that bad, all he's gotta do is raise the interest rates on all your MBNA credit cards.

Winslow's Injuries Turn Out To Be Truly Serious
                        Officials Re-Create Accident

                        POSTED: 5:13 pm EDT May 6, 2005

CLEVELAND -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow's injuries are much more serious than first thought, NewsChannel5 reported.

5 On Your Side Health Team Anchor Lee Jordan reported sources close to the Winslow story said the Sunday motorcycle accident left Winslow with a broken tibia and femur, along with a fracture to the large bone in his thigh. His ACL was damaged, possibly torn and there are lacerations on his liver and kidney.

NewsChannel5's source continues to stand by the information.

One media outlet is even suggesting Winslow's football career is over, WEWS reported.

Winslow previously had two surgeries on the right leg the he broke last fall.

                        Re-Creating Accident

Meanwhile, officials in Westlake re-created Winslow's accident by duplicating the motorcycle's skid marks in the parking lot of Cuyahoga Community College. The test, which involved using a special device, was designed to help gauge Winslow's speed when he crashed his motorcycle Sunday night.

WEWS reported police didn't have a bike similar to Winslow's, so a Channel 19 reporter, with nearly the same bike and tires as Winslow's volunteered to do the skid test. Police gave him the green light.

Westlake police repeatedly cautioned the rider to go slowly, so they could estimate Winslow's speed.

He ended up falling off the bike when attempting to stop. (See Video)

Officials said the reconstruction closely resembled what happened to Winslow.

"As everybody saw, you can see how easy it is to lose control on a motorcycle when you're braking," said Lt. Bill Eschenfelder of the Westlake Police Department.

Browns can't say how badly Winslow hurt

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

                          May 18, 2005

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Browns finally know how much damage Kellen Winslow Jr. did to his right knee. Now, they can't say how badly he's hurt.

The club has not received authorization from Winslow or his family to disclose any of the injuries the tight end sustained when he crashed his motorcycle on May 1, team spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz said.

Winslow underwent an MRI exam on Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors had been waiting for the swelling to go down before they could do further tests. The Browns received the results on Wednesday but they can't release them to the public until Winslow or his representatives give them permission.

Winslow could be waiting to get another medical opinion before disclosing the extent of his injury.

The club has braced itself for bad news on Winslow, who could miss the upcoming season. The former Miami star played in only two games as a rookie last season before breaking his right leg while trying to recover an onside kick in Week 2.

While riding his newly purchased motorcycle in a parking lot near his Westlake home, the 21-year-old Winslow was hurt when he slammed the high-powered bike into a curb and went flying over the handlebars.

He spent nine days in the hospital before being released.

Police have concluded their investigation of Winslow's accident and turned over their case to Westlake law director John Wheeler, who will determine whether charges should be filed, Lt. Ray Arcuri said.

Wheeler did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Police never interviewed Winslow about the accident because his attorney wanted to know the questions in advance, said Arcuri, who called the request ``silly.''

Winslow could be charged with reckless operation, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $250 fine.

His use of a motorcycle violated standard NFL player contract language that prohibits players from engaging in dangerous activities. The Browns could require him to return millions of dollars in signing bonuses. The team has declined to comment on his contract.
