keyboards are cool! Jump had it ..made it a number one hit!...Keyboards were a big part of the 80's......
I didn't mind the keyboards, but did hear that on the last (disastrous) tour, Ed didn't play them at all
eh...i doubt it.
we all know dave wasn't a big fan of keyboards in van halen. (because people wanted to see the king of the 6 string on the guitar, not that keytar.)
my guess was it was control over the overall direction of the music.
dave wouldn't have done when it's love or dreams.
yes, he did jump, but that was a high-energy tune. (and he was still probably not a huge fan of it.) and he did secrets, but that had solid guitar work.
but a ballady keyboard track? nah. dave wouldn't have done that. and it looks like ed wanted to.
No....keyboards were a part of Van Halen much earlier than
some people think.
See The Cradle Will Rock.
the keyboards only sucked in van hagar.. I think if they were to used the keys on 1984, and then would of headed back to they're rock roots (with roth) everything would of been alright They would of ruled the world.. But mr magic fingers couldn't get out of bed.. And when he did, it became van hagar...
Cradle....the music to Jump was written in '81 I believe.
Besides, everybody used em a little.
Shit Skyscraper.... Dave wanted to use em, otherwise we'd have heard more from Vai, who's no slouch on the axe himself.
Fuck Scott Weiland. Fucking asshole. I get trashed all the time and still go to work. And my job sucks ass. -ODShowtime

That's Defranco family shit.
My apologies to the Defranco family.
why does stern always attribute the keyboards as the final straw that killed cvh??
vai is better than evhotherwise we'd have heard more from Vai, who's no slouch on the axe himself.

was in before Sam turned him into a homo.
The Eat 'Em and Smile band would have been better with Ed, that
would have been the best band ever.
Ed and his sister and Hagar killed VH not keyboards.
how would it have been better with ed? vai is a better musician than ed and if ed was in it his sister would of had to tag along because they cant seperate and mike would have felt left out so it would have been a vh cd. the point is the eeas and skysraper band was the most massive band ever each member is in the top 25 of their instuments and dlr is the best frontman
key boards do rule,i meen JUMP,the best song ever, has alot of key board in it,JUMP IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really love you baby, I love what you've got
Let's get together we can, Get hot
Jump was lame when it first came out and people hated it, including me, because of the keyboards
EVH was better when Dave was fronting 'cause Dave braught out the best in Eddie.......when Dave left the magic was gone there goes the best fontman/guitarist duo in rock and then when spammy stepped up to the plate EVH was never the same i don't care what anybody sais sammy and Eddie just don't have the magic Dave and Eddie had just watch the US Festival and that's proof enough.Originally posted by Redballjets88

Keyboards are cool when used sparingly.
Egos and Lethargy killed CVH though...
A cryin' shame.
Without DLR in the lineup, Van Halen is merely Rat Salade...
Hell NO. Everyone LOVED Jump. Roth leaving is what killed VH...
weren't JUMP and I'LL WAIT the biggest hits/singles they had?
on a related note, in I'LL WAIT was Dave singin about a girl in a advertisement for something? Has anyone seen/have a pic of this?
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Val killed CVH. Love and marriage can drive a mans true friends away and he wouldn't even know it. That women would never let her Ed go on that road again with Dave for many reasons. Anyone married can related to what I'm say'n.
i also heard val wanted Dave first........but Dave didn't want nothing to do with her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Originally posted by m4dm4x

skyscraper was very very keyboard heavy....i think part of daves new band was so that he could have complete control. he produced it...so if he didnt want them, they wouldnt have been there...but they were...
so he couldnt have hated keys THAT much.......
Goin' crazy was really popish and keyboard heavy as well and that was only 2 years after jump
Got beef with my comments? Blow me!

"Carpe Mammarium"
knowing that he'd have to do 'jump' live,
dave would've realised a keys player
would be a neccessary evil.
so he got one with a songwriting pedigree.
i met gregg once, had a good chat, he said brett was a
very talented and cool guy.
Dunno about that.
Don't think EVERYONE loved Jump, far as Halen fans who had been into the band prior to 1984 went, anyway. Jump and I'll Wait were never anything that great to me, keyboard-wise.
Nah, think it had more to do with personality clashes, and Ed wanting to assert himself more. Willing to bet Ed was tired of feeling like he was being told what to do by Ted, Dave and Noel. Seems like Dave and Ed always has a certain amount of tension to their relationship, and maybe Ed felt he wasn't getting enough of his ideas across, or didn't want to have to battle to get what he wanted on the albums....I mean, I definitely get the sense that Ed was pissed since Dave was doing virtually all the press for CVH, and maybe he just got tired of feeling like he was being led around, so building 5150 studios was a way of having some control, or whatever.
Even though 1984 isn't my favorite VH album, I don't really think that musical differences drove CVH apart. Seemed like there was plenty of creative juice left in that lineup (as 1996 demonstrated). Think it was just ego and a lack of being willing to compromise - this includes Dave as well.
Scramby eggs and bacon.
Well, video killed the radio star..................
All I know is after keys in that band we didn't get stuff like Fools, Light up the Sky, Romeo Delight, etc. Ed didn't inspire a generation of kids to play keyboards.
However, Ed said he came up with the Hear About it Later riff on keyboards. It's certainly possible to use keys in a ballsy rock context and not have it be a lame ballad.
It's also possible to do a slow tempo tune and have it be melodic and not cheesy (You See Me crying, Aerosmith, from TOYS)
It was lack of Roth in VH in my opinion
There obviously was creative juice left in the CVH tank after 1984.Originally posted by Terry

However, Ed was so into keyboards back then that he would go some months without playing guitar.
I'm sure Dave hated the keyboard stuff for Why Can;t this be Love and Love Walks In, 'cause they were ballad-type songs.
He could've put another "Ill Wait" spin to those, but he didn't want to.
He felt the music that Ed was coming up with was too melancholoy.
There were some creative differences, but of course personality clashes is what broke the band apart (mostly Ed's drinking and drug problems).

Yeah.
I didn't mind the keyboards on Jump & I'll Wait - for the time, I was new to Van Halen, keyboards were the selling sound of the 80s. After hearing some other, older Van Halen that year, I thought that the keyboards, when used in limitation (like 1984, 2 tracks only) gave them a broader sound and it was fun.
Of course, 5150 came out and everything was utterly synthed to death which really killed the effect for me...plus I didn't really care for the new singer as much as I did the old one, but remember this was still before I learned to hate Sammy Hagar as much as possible.
By OU812, I was ready to puke and started hoping they'd get that first guy back.
Twistin' by the pool.
And the Cradle will Rocks shows what keyboards can be.
And I love it when a hot blues band tickles the ivories. Bury the Casio and dig me up a juke-joint upright!
Stern says keyboards killed CVH because it's a quick quip on the whole screwed-up story.
"Float like a butterfly. Sting like a B-52." - DLR=VH=
"Rejoice in the wife of your youth. May her breasts satisfy you always." Proverbs 5:18-19.
Keyboards didn't kill CVH.
Keyboards for slow, melancholoy music, is one of the factors that did, yes.
You're right. But I think in the end, it all boiled down to Dave's desire to play live through the summer of 1985. The brothers were primarily against it, they wanted to spend the following months in the studio working on the next album but Dave who up to that time was sick of waiting on Edward, so he did CFTH with the videos just to occupy his time he had. I think once the brothers refused to play live then Dave in his own mind had no choice but to bail. He probably thought it was gonna be just a temporary split from each other until the slaggings by Eddie in the press started and the hiring of Sammy ultimately spolied in any hopes of that.Originally posted by Vinnie Velvet

I dont blame the keyboards. There are so many great Rock songs
with keyboards, that it would be impossible to list them all..
I think the use of keyboards on all the Classic Van Halen albums
was done minimalistically, and fitted in great. 1984 was no exception.
It was great to hear the synth sound applied to Rock for a change.
Dreams sucks, and I guess chronologically that was on the successor
to 1984. So there could be an argument for keyboards ruining the
Van Hagar sound.

The reason "Jump" is different and much better than "Dreams" is because there's no GAYNESS applied to it.
Case in point:
Dreams: "Spread your wings...get higher and higher."
Jump: "Can't cha see I'm standing here, got my back against a record machine."
Okay, which is more GAY?
Yup, Dreams.
End of elaboration.
