    Hendrix.

Though Clapton's playing on things like "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Motherless Children" is peerless, he's still overall the most boring guitarist, songwriter, interview, and multi-millionaire rock star ever.

Clapton was good with Cream, but nothing that good after that.

Hendrix kicks his ass any day.

I never really thought hendrix was too great,he was good and thats a fact but i personally think it was more a case of right place right time,at actually playing the guitar i dont think hendrix is anymore great than the likes of EVH and Slash

Ahhh ya got to realize the times he was in....99% of guitarists at that time sounded like the Thamesmen (The 60's band that was an early version f Spianl Tap).

They played this plinky-plinky fucking guitar that sucked ass.

Hendrix came along an completely re-defined the art of electric guitar playing.

    Hendrix...hands down.

EVH and Slash would be the first to tell ya they cannot begin to compare to what Hendrix could do (and often did).

Hendrix, even in the condition he's in today, walks all over Clapton.

I originally was not really impressed with Slash.

However, one of my fave hangouts in L.A. was the Late, Great...FM STATION!!!!!

So anyway I went there one Monday to see a favorite band BB Chung King & The Screaming BuddaHeads...

The dude fronting it was a Japanese-American named Alan Murikitani, who had a killer singing voice, and guitar chops that would impress Stevie Ray Vaughan. SERIOUS electric blooze player.

So anyway, I got into the club, and Slash was sitting at the bar. I said hello and went over to a table to sit and watch the blooze fireworks.

So after awhile, Alan mentions he is going to get a friend up to jam....sure enough Slash got up there and did a version of the old 60's rock tune "Going Down".

He fucking terrorized me with the shit he played.

    He is a motherfucker.

But Hendrix was, and always WILL BE, badder then 10-HUNDRED MOTHERFUCKERS.

    End of story.

    Hendrix.

You could put Clapton against Rick Springfield and I'd STILL not vote for Clapton.

He wants to be known for being a bluesman, but look at him! That fuck has drained more money out of the system than any 20 blues greats made combined! Then look at the heartless, emotionless writings? What a fuckwit!

    Robert Johnson he ain't!

Here's some good Clapton songs though...

"I Got The Kid Fell Outta My Skyscraper Building Blues"

    "Devil Is In My Maserati"

"I'm Really Black, But I Talk Like Prince Charles!"

    "I Like Fish"

"Secondhand Love - Ode To George Harrison"

"Gimmie Some Other Schlep I Can Ripoff"

"Blues Ain't Dead, I Jus' Plays 'Em Poorly"

    "Crackerman Blues"

    "Me Wanna Be A Beatle"

    "Take My Seat Stevie"

I gots a ton of 'em!!!!

    A-cha-cha-cha!!!!

    Clapton

Hardrock is right tho, Slash deffinetely burns the fuckin house down everytime he plays. Amazing sense of melody, his solos bring songs to whole new levels.

Gotta go with slow-hand! But his solos are unique. Jimi Hendrix basically set the standards with the talking guitar. But thank Frampton
AND ESPECIALLY Steve Vai for continuing to do it.

Clapton's a motherfucker, but Hendrix hands down. I think Clapton would tell you that. Listen to Machine Gun on the first Band of Gypsys album...not the Live at the Fillmore one that came out a few years ago. Jimi was on fire. It may not sound as incredible now, but he was PEERLESS at the time.

Makes me think of one EVH who also was peerless in his day.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Speaking in that voice of Prince in the Chapelle Show "Clapton bores me"

Clapton is the only "bluesman" I can think of with no sense of humour...he misses the point it seems.

Start hangaing around a differnet class of people and your questions will be answered.

Voodoo Chile Slight Return...Clapton hasn't done one song remotely close to it as far as rocking the house!

Machine Gun? Purple Haze? Hey Joe, maybe. Sand Castles?

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Clapton's best work is within the confines of a group setting. They push him and he responds. He can't take the constant pressure of working that hard and bails. That's why The Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos were able to squeeze him. Even in those situations...he doesn't come close to Page, Beck, Hendrix or Harrison.

Its about a bigger picture than just guitar playing...Jimi wrote songs ...not for VH1 or the radio or anything like that..and had PERSONALITY and SOUL in his music...he was a risk taker. Did whatever he felt like.

Kind of like how Jimmy Page sucks as a "musician"...he couldn't get a gig in most bar cover bands..BUT...like Hendrix, came up with some whole other shit, with style and personality....and thats why people dig him so much. He had the right intentions.

    Neil Young, same deal.

Clapton is middleoftheroad all the time...he doesn't take risks. He just does what is expected of him.

But he was Eddies fav guitarist though.

There are a lot of people who do that; it's easy just to say, "yeah, Jimi's the best, " and have no knowledge of what he was all about. DrMaddVibe's right; start talking with a different class of people, and you will find some answers.

I don't know how much Jimi you're familiar with, but check out Axis Bold as Love if you haven't heard it yet. I guarantee you'll find something you'll like. There's a little of everything on that album, and it has, IMHO, some of Jimi's best songwriting, and the playing rips too.

Jimi benefits from a his small, but brilliant, catalog of music.

Clapton's stretches over 5 decades, with various degrees of success.

    CLAPTON in CREAM is BRILLIANT.

ALL OF JIMI's material was BRILLIANT.

    JIMI wins.

My firm belief is that "Machine Gun" from the Band Of Gypsies album contains the greatest guitar solo ever recorded, hands down.

The shit he played that night was SCARY!

Anyways, I'd say Hendrix. Sure his guitar playing is great, but he was a great songwriter too and I love his voice.

You had to be there when Clapton played with Cream .... he was special and thre's a reason why the "Clapton is God" signs appeared in England at the time.....BUT, all that said and appreciated, whether you asked Slowhand, Pete Townsend ( great player) Richards, Harrison or anyone else with a pulse and JIMI was and remians the man: it's about the era and the impact his music made certainly, but it's the PLAYING that is so astounding, Only the late Stevie RayVaughn for me has come close, although players like Slash are first rate. Hendrix was especially amazing LIVE without any of the tricks ( and there weren't many in the late 60's) in the studio: Lilsten to RED HOUSE on a live album called "Live in The West" --

Yeah, when he gets to the LOUD section....I think that version showed up later on an album called "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" which was a collection of some of the very best live performances of individual songs...seamlessly integrated so as to sound as if it were one single show...

I believe that version was from the San Diego Sports Arena, recorded by Wally Heider....

    Hendrix 100%
Clapton is about the most overrated thing next to Jimmy Page.
