Question Dave's cover of "Baker Street": A cryptic fuck-off?

This is one more baffling cover choice.

Some fucker told me that Dave was a HUGE Gerry Rafferty fan...who knows? Seems like a cover of "Stuck In The Middle With You" would've been a better choice. That was Stealers Wheel or some shit, but still Gerry Rafferty.

"Baker Street" is like this melancholy ode to a dude that ain't got his shit together right?

    Fucking WEIRD.

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you’ll drink the night away
    And forget about everything.

This city desert makes you feel so cold
It’s got so many people but it’s got no soul
And it’s taken you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything.

You used to think that it was so easy,
You used to say that it was so easy
But you’re tryin’, you’re tryin’ now.
Another year and then you’d be happy
Just one more year and then you’d be happy
But you’re cryin’, you’re cryin’ now.

Way down the street there’s a light in his place
He opens the door, he’s got that look on his face
And he asks you where you’ve been, you tell him who you’ve seen
    And you talk about anything.

He’s got this dream about buyin’ some land
He’s gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he’ll settle down, it’s a quiet little town
    And forget about everything.

But you know he’ll always keep movin’
You know he’s never gonna stop movin’
Cause he’s rollin’, he’s the rollin’ stone.
And when you wake up it’s a new morning
The sun is shining, it’s a new morning
But you’re going, you’re going home.

I'm actually surprised that song didn't make the "Diamond Dave" album. Can't say the same about the cover of the ELO disco song though. I never liked the original of that one either.

I saw Rick Derringer about 10 years ago...was talking with him after the show and I asked him about Johnny Winter. "In BAD shape" he said. Then he told me Johnny probably won't make it through the week alive.

...but Johnny IS STILL ALIVE AND KICKIN. He looks like he's even gained a couple of pounds in the last couple of years...

sax is the natural enemy of the guitar solo...

it's a great laid back tune...something in the mood like "coconut grove" or "sunburn"

I wonder when dave recorded all this stuff.

Enjoyed it. Can think of several cover tunes on Diamond Dave I'd have replaced this with.

Funny about the lyrics being a possible dialogue to EVH. Fairly appropriate.

I would have preferred Stuck in the Middle...for sure. Dave would nail that shit.

But, always an interesting perspective from Rustoffa. I never thought of the lyrics possible pertaining to E. Hmmm...

Dave covering "Baker Street" isn't that surprising.
"Coconut Grove", "Damn Good" (safe for the guitar wizardness), "Sunburn" or "Black Sand"are close to that mood.

I dug that tune back when it was released (1977) and often broadcast. Even bought the "City to city" album at Tower Records at Picadilly in 1995. I like it a lot, and in addition it fits damn well with some girl at home.

But I agree with Rustoffa about the lyrics, it's kind of odd.

As for Edgar Winter, I think he was the one who took a big risk, as the original sax is perfect: his own sounds weak in comparison...

In Rafferty's version, it's the guitar solo that's always grabbed my attention. Great inspiration there.

Yeah a lot of people miss the guitar solo it's very cool.

Did I mention Gerry Rafferty is Scottish?

City to city sold a couple of million in the US but much to the anger of his record company he refused to tour with it or it would have been much more.

I think he was one of those songwriter guys that just didn't want to be a big star.

Wow that's a song from my youth that I never knew the artist or title. But it's a strong song. Roth's version is only a half take but I don't see it as stab at EVH.
Singer seems to be addressing a woman about her no-good man. Perhaps singer has an interest in her as well or he could just be narrator. Either way great vocals and both sax and guitar burn a place in your brain.
Thanx for DLR download Big Fat Sammy.

I liked it much better than the Disco song, but ... this isn't why we like Dave and Classic VH. Bakerstreet is way too mellow. It's not rockin' enough..

I like almost every thing they ever did!

I sort of compare them to the Beatles in some ways...

    Jeff Lynne was obviously influenced
by the Beatles, But he took it to
a new place and the material all
sounded original. It was good value,
like we had a continuation of the Beatles
    but from a new perspective...
Production on the ELO stuff was also way
ahead of its time. Great talent indeed !
I thought it was fitting when he eventually got
    to work with George Harrison...

It's also synthesized. But yes I do like his version better than the original.
