Ed's solo - Tucson '04

I downloaded Ed's solo from the last year's Tucson show....

I wanted to hear for myself how his solo had supposedly degraded over the years....

Well, damn, I can't believe I'm saying this, but after listening to that quote-unquote "solo", that was damn near piss break material !!!

The closest I've heard to that kind of sloppiness in a guitar solo was frickin' Mick Mars !!!!

Listening to Van Halen fans yelling "this sucks !!!" and "come on Ed ??" is simply unfathomable to me, that shit just doesn't happen....

Yeah sure, he threw in some Cathedral and stuff like that, but for the most part, it was just like he was just goofing off at 5150 !!!

And yes, I know, he told everyone that he was just fucking off, but Edward Van Halen simply CANNOT fuck off during his solo in a Van Halen show Goddammit !!!!

And then finally, when he starts into Eruption, it's almost anti-climactic, it's almost like you're saying to yourself "15 minutes of bullshit and 45 seconds of guitar playing".....

I guess in summary, I was just fucking shocked.....

And considering how good the soundchecks have sounded playing CVH, you may have something...

But if I'm already stupid enough for paying 75 clams to listen to 2 hours of lollipop ballads, at least give me 15 minutes of an prototypical Edward Van Halen solo, ya know ??

This actually goes back to how Dave helped guide the band into what they were.

Remember in CFTH Dave talks how when ed was leading mammoth he would just stand there and stare down at his fretboard and play?

Dave gave the band DIRECTION and a POINT OF VIEW. Ed has gone to say how before they got signed, dave told him he has to move around more, and move his mouth with the notes he's playing. this eventually led to more colorful clothing and whatnot as well.

but it was also about creating a tight, cohesive solo section. People are there hear more than what you're going to do while sitting in front of the TV with no amp. especially having been out of the public eye for such a long time, you BETTER blow me away with what you've been doing in all that time.

He really sucked during the show...again, I heard he got blitzed and sucked just to piss Sammy off...

Man - I went to the Louisville show (crucify me later if you want, I regret it) and Ed was awful. He didn't jack off like he did on that solo, but he wasn't on his A game either.

Anyone here that plays guitar could've smoked him that night. People sitting around me were saying that.

I didn't know whether to be pissed or embarrassed or sympathetic.

He was a shell of his former self that night.

No, but seriously, I think there is more hope than ever now, if there really is validity to Ed not being into the whole Van Gaygar thing. I really hope this is Ed telling everyone that he want's the REAL VAN HALEN to step up to the plate. I hope.

I used to be a huge Eddie Van Halen fan. I even saw the VH3 tour with Gary Cherone because I just because Eddie was playing a lot of the old Roth era songs live. Man, Ed nailed those old songs like I'm the One and Someone Get Me A Doctor. He was spot on and was playing as good as he did when I saw VH for the first time in 1980.

I saw Eddie in San Jose on the last tour and he sucked. He was just making noise most the time. I couldn't believe it.

I saw the 2004 show in Moline, Illinois (I got free tickets thru a local radio station). His solo dragged on forever. I'd seen Van Halen in 1980 or 1981 in Macomb, Illinois and in 1984 in Peoria, Illinois. The difference between Sam and Dave is night and day. When you saw Van Halen with DLR you went to a party/event/show. You really didn't give a fuck if it was perfect or not, you got to see VAN HALEN in all their glory. This last tour was about MONEY. I'm not slighting anybody but if I wouldn't have won tickets I wouldn't have went. There were alot of empty seats and it wasn't that big of a venue. I only went to see EVH play and to me he was just a huge dissapointment.

i must've caught the good end (or start, however you want to define it), i was at the d.c. stop on that tour...

eddies solo wasn't bad that night...

but then again, i was a 17 year old kid who was watching the FUCKING LEGEND play about 200 feet away from him (also being that my girlfriend was a hagar fan, i had a feeling i was getting laid that night too so it wasn't a total wash after the solo ended), so he could've fucking played chopsticks the whole time and it would've been the greatest thing i'd ever heard...

he seemed to be interacting with the crowd and the other two mokeys alright (knowledge serves me right he and sam didn't get all that close that night, but the cheese meister kept screaming "edward" like he was getting fucked in the ass)...

well i heard the san antonio show..........and gotta say this...........I WAS DISAPOINTED........

however all the other fans were not...........they were loud as hell.......evh was good........but it was definately an off night.........

dont get me wrong there was some good shit.......... but three parts in particular sucked........Cathedral w/wah pedal....

12th fret thumb taping...........(not means streets intro)

and that 10 min feedback note he held a little too LONG

but eddie was on fire the rest fo the night...........very energetic running, jumping, sliding, audience participation..........

ed did well but his solo sucked.............that same solo on another person would have been great

but by EVH standards it fucking sucked........ eddie was off and he even said so.........

he even went as far as saying i do it for a living and you dont
