*FWA-BAM*
How in the hell are you going to have U2, The Greatful Dead, and Velvet Underground ahead of Led muhfuckin' Zeppelin? Fucking idiots...
Just imagine how much greater respect that Van Halen would have if they had retired the name after Dave left, if it had just ended in 1985. No Sammy! No dripping wet homo ballads!
With just the Dave year's in existance VH would no doubt get a mention on every "greatest bands" list.
Ranking is subjective, but at least 8 out of the 10 groups actually belonged on the list.
While the Velvet Underground was certainly an influence on a lot of bands, I don't believe they justify a top 10 entry themselves. And Sly and the Family Stone sure as HELL don't belong near there.
It was probably a PC move, so Marley wouldn't be the only non-white guy on the list. Uh, does the name "Jimi Hendrix Experience" ring a fucking bell??

Here's my initial list. I've ranked them, starting with #1. It's subject to change after I think about it for a few days. More complete info to follow. Songs are listed as samples so the reader's memory is jogged. They are not necessarily the artist's greatest singles.
• The Beatles (Hey Jude, Strawberry Fields Forever)
• The Rolling Stones (Satisfaction, Start Me Up)
• Led Zeppelin (Stairway To Heaven, Dy'er Maker)
• The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations, Wouldn’t It Be Nice)
• The Who (Baba O’Reilly, Won’t Get Fooled Again)
• U2 (Where The Streets Have No Name, One)
• Fleetwood Mac (Go Your Own Way, Rhiannon)
• Pink Floyd (Comfortably Numb, Dark Side of the Moon)
• AC/DC (Shook Me All Night Long, Highway To Hell)
• The Doors (Light My Fire, People Are Strange)
As far as just American bands, it'd go something like this:
The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, The Eagles, Aerosmith, The Eagles, Van Halen, Metallica, Nirvana...

any list without classic vh , the who or queen isn't worth fucking reading imo
The problem with Van Halen is that critics have to take the whole of the band's output, not just what's before 1985. It's great that we all know that it's really two different bands, but they don't look at it quite that way. 3/4 of the same members means it's essentially the same band to them. Therefore, they will critique albums like 5150, Balance, and OU812 and include them in Van Halen's legacy. No doubt, everything recorded after 1985 drug the band down below what they would have been regarded as had they not just pulled a Beatles and retired then. A shame.
As it is, I approached my list from a critic's perspective.

These Dumb Motherfuckers at these magazines and shit seem to forget that it's not just how important that band was in history that made them good. I mean, these listes never include Robert Johnson or Son House. The TRUE founding fathers of Rock and Roll as we know it. They tend to dwell on The Beatles. I love the Beatles, One of my favourites. But they were by no means the GREATEST rock band as they never really put on a good live performance. (The rooftop and Shea were good, but it was no "Queen at Live Aid") and Bob Marley wasn;t even Rock, neither was Aretha. And Outkast????? FUCK OFF.
True Rock and Roll is what has been derided from the Blues. And that includes a whole lot of bands that don;t even get a look in because they weren't The Beatles or U2 (U2 are no way rockin' enough to be in a top 10!!!)
