    The Irony of Tesla

Tesla is named after Nicola Tesla, the man widely credited for inventing the radio first, yet Marconi go the patent first and is officially given credit. Fast forward to the late 1980s. Tesla has a hit with "Signs" from the Five Man Acoustical Jam album, the first unplugged. Yet that homo Bon Jovi is credited with starting the whole Unplugged era with the lame ass performance at the MTV awards. Ironic, no? Tesal did do the unplugged before Bon Jovi right?

no i think not.........bon jovi did theirs on the 86-87 tour...tesla did their a little later maybe 89-90...

the slippery when wet album cam before the great radio controversy...

the 5 man acoustical jam came after the greatradio controversy...

it is also possible that BON JOVI might have played their acoustic set in 88 due to the ir lost of equipment......... leading to the acoustic duet
    'wanted dead or alive".......@the VMA's

so it might not be 86-87......eventhough it was on their 1986 Slippery when wet album....

    Re: The Irony of Tesla

I'm not sure about the irony of Tesla.

As a matter of fact, it's ironic that I'm even posting in this thread.

    Here comes the next step:

    Conflict.

Well, actually it's the first step, which is fucking ironic in and of itself!

Let's all focus on suspension of disbelief and have a drink!

Well what is ironic is that Nikola Tesla is one of the most important, infuential, and overlooked inventors of all time.

Tesla the band was pretty successful, started a trend in releasing acoustic live albums, and also is severely overlooked.

I think the Bon Jovi thing came first. But as I recall, John Mellencamp started the acoustic version craze with his unplugged Pink Houses.

Didn't he make that freaky crystal ball with the lightning in it? The one where when you touch the globe, the little lightning bolts go to your fingers?

This dude back in high school duck-taped one of those things on his back dash. He slammed on brakes or some shit and it nailed him right in the back of his head.

It didn't fuck him up or anything, but everyone started calling him flood light or some shit.

5 Man Electrical Band...a #3 hit in 1971. The title of Tesla's unplugged set was a play on the name.

Paul McCartney was actually the first one to release an "unplugged" album during that particular time period, but if you want to go back even further, there was the Grateful Dead's "Reckoning" way back in 1980.

I don't know who the Hell credited Bon Jovi as being the inovator. This is the first I've heard of it.

BTW, I loved the Tesla CD as well. It's the only thing by them I own to this day.

The Bon Jovi performace in question took place at The VMA Awards in 1989. Tesla's album came out in late 90 or early 91. As far as who gives the performance any credit, here is a blurb from Bon Jovi's web site.

    http://www.islandrecords.com/bonjovi...nd_bonjovi.las
Perhaps, JON BON JOVI and RICHIE SAMBORA's most influential performance was on the 1989 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS. Armed only with acoustic guitars, JON and RICHIE performed "WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE" and "LIVIN' ON A PRAYER." To Jon and Richie, it wasn't much of a big deal; the songs were written on two acoustic guitars and, therefore, stripping them down to their basic form was a natural thing to do. However, the response from those who witnessed the performance, both live at the awards and at home on television, was instantaneous and enthusiastic. This performance has generally been acknowledged (even among MTV staffers) as the inspirational spark that led to the MTV UnPlugged series and the catalyst for the subsequent popularity of the unplugged movement in popular music

Eh, They did it on MTV, It was nothing new, MTV saw how popular it got, Thus they created the Unplugged series. Thus they are credited for it.

Bon Jovi had some good stuff from like 1984-1990, Nothing truly special after that

I auctually rather like that preformance of Wanted and Prayer. Though I bet I'm in the Minority on this board when it comes to that.

If they want to credit the real originators, they should try the Grateful Dead.

As I said, their "Reckoning" CD came out in 1980, but they were actually playing live acoustic sets long before that. I have some "unplugged" boots from 1970, in fact.

So fuck Bon Jovi. Gimme Bon Jerry..........
