METALLICA and VAN HAGAR are the only heavy metal/hard rock bands to make the Forbes magazine's annual list of the 100 most powerful figures in the entertainment world. METALLICA ranked No. 23, thanks to earnings of $37.4 million and relentless touring throughout 2004. Catalog sales boosted the band's take, too, and a documentary ("Some Kind of Monster") about their adventures in counseling helped raised their profile with those who'd never deign to bang their heads. VAN HAGAR, meanwhile, landed at No. 61, with an estimated revenue of 29.6 million, generated primarily from their first U.S. tour in years.

Forbes calculated its list by ranking the celebrities on both their salaries as well as the amount of media attention they garnered through TV and radio appearances, magazine covers, newspaper mentions, and hits on the web over the past 12 months.

I love Metallica! At least the stuff up to ...And Justice For All. Everything else after that was crap, really.

Still a huge Metallica fan - I actually like bands to experiment and try new things, otherwise they end up stale and sterile like AC/DC.

Sure, the first five records are the strongest, but what band in their 40s makes music with the same vibrancy and relevancy as they did in their 20s. To these ears, 'Death Magnetic' was a great return to form.

Live, they'll still wipe the floor with anybody.
