Aside from a few select groups like VR, old rockers are dead! DLR sold 15K copies of his last album. Billy Idol has a great new album out and it has sold 80k copies. Basically, unless you are a U2, your relevance in the music world is very short lived. Your only hope in music is that you bang out a bunch of awesome albums and then make a living out of touring them for 30 years. Look at the Stones. What was their last great album and when was it released. No one buys any of their shit anymore unless it's a greatest hits repackage. Dave sure has done a number on himself. He should have a musical cache due to his 6 albums with VH alone. How he has managed to become a commercial failure is a complex issue. No one should sink so low from such heights. However, as we know, it is not hard to fuck things up. Yeah, the old "Nirvana killed old rock" is partially true, but how do you explain acts like U2 being able to survive the 80s, 90s and today's music scene? Their brilliant, that's how. Dave beat the shit out of his rap and image. His solo music, IMO, has a great deal of merit. Most of it is at least above average. Honestly, though, what could he possibly do now to change his outlook at 50? If he were to start playing lots of awesome solo Dave at his concerts, he'd probably get booed off stage. As far as putting out an awesome rocking album, hi did do that. The DLR band album had crap production, but lots of attitude and great songs. Hardly anyone bought it. Dave probably figured that covers was the way to go in 03. Well, look above for the startling results. Really, I think it's over for Dave as a solo act. Not that I don't believe in his ability to put out more great music, but because albums have to sell in order for a musician to carry on. Dave just can't do that any longer. It's either the radio gig or a far fetched CVH tour. The man can't even pull in 2,000 people into clubs anymore. He's reduced to rib fests. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to play rib fests. However, we are talking about a former VH singer and arguably one of the greatest frontmen in the history of R&R. Give me your thoughts.

I disagree! If Dave doesn't give a shit if he sells a dozen copies, then why the fuck did he go to Europe to get the album pushed over there. Did you listen to his radio gig in Boston? He is not as fucked in the head as some would believe. A bit of a misconception IMO. BTW, the festival shit is clearly a way to blast into the past when he'd play loaded stadiums. Come on dude! No one puts on a production like the one on the "Diamond Dave" cd for shits and giggles. Even if that's what Dave feels, think about the suits that put out the fucking thing! Far as my own tastes are concerned, the amount of copies a release sells has little to do with its 'musical relevance'. If I like what I'm hearing, doesn't really matter to me if 15 other people bought it or 15 million.

Amount of units moved has a direct correlation with commercial relevance, but since I neither work for nor own stock in any major or indie record labels, I could really give a shit.

U2 has managed to keep selling a lot of records throughout the years, while the majority of artists who had careers in the 1980s and are still active today aren't. Ok. Pretty much....um...so what? Good for U2, and good for you if you're a U2 fan.

Why isn't Dave still selling a lot of records now? Think a good portion of it has to do with people associating him with CVH to the exclusion of everything else. In the end, that's what he's always gonna be remembered for abive all else to the public at large. How many people who were into hard rock in the 1980s (when they were in their teens and early twenties) are even listening to it or going to concerts anymore? People get older, get families, get other priorities. Am sure to many of today's young record buyers, Roth is just a relic in their eyes. The main record buying demo wasn't even BORN when CVH were still together.

A slight part of it has to due with availability. Both the DLR Band and Diamond Dave didn't have a huge media promotional blitz and hundereds of thousands of copies shipped around the country available for purchase. There are plenty of record stores that don't even HAVE a section of their CD's reserved for only Roth solo releases. You can't easily find the stuff anymore.

There's only a few dozen groups/artists out of the thousands upon of thousands who have released records since rock came to the fore that are among the greats. And not every record U2 put out was a smash, either (plenty of copies of Pop to be found in Bargain Bins. Same goes for Zep's Presence. Does that make them shitty albums?). Virtually nobody remains commercially hot forever.

I was on the road in most of 1984....I went to a music store and actually bought the Quiet Riot album "Condition Critical", which was a good description of the quality of the album.

It sucked so bad that I did not even make it through Side A of the cassette. I went back to the music store and demanded a refund.

Those numbers only reflect sales in the US though I bet.

So the statement that if you are not U2 you are now irrelevant applies only to the trendiest country on Earth.

I bet if you count worldwide sales, the numbers will paint a very different picture.

I saw DuBrow here in Houston eating at a Mexican restaraunt about 6 or 7 months ago. He looked alright. He was touring through Texas I guess. He probably sells those CD's at his show. Who gives a shit what sells and doesn't. Dave has a legacy. That's what matters.
