Rogers issued a public apology Wednesday. He was suspended for 20 games and was slapped with a $50,000 fine.

Wells, who signed with the Red Sox as a free agent during the off-season, accused the cameraman of trying to bait Rogers.

"He's winking at another guy going, 'Yeah, I'm going to get paid,'" Wells said.

When told that Rogers faces assault charges, Wells said, "So? The guy's not hurt. Be a man and take it. Unless he was physically hurt and something happened ... just like that guy in Boston when that incident happened in the bullpen [during the 2003 ALCS, when ex-Yankees Karim Garcia and Jeff Nelson roughed up Fenway Park groundskeeper Paul Williams] when I was with the Yankees, and he comes the next day with a neck brace. Be a man, dude."

Wells' reputation precedes him. For example, he suffered a broken finger in a bar brawl prior to the start of the 1998 season.

He threw a perfect game for the Yankees against the Minnesota Twins that season, but later admitted in a tell-all book that he accomplished the feat with a raging hangover.
