Anson Carter to play with the sisters (Hanson brothers, Sedins).
Is this the breakout year for the young Swedes?
No excuses with a bruising finisher like Carter!
I'm almost pitying the rest of the league...
Reaction??!!
We will need a new thread when season begins, but for the US hockey fans...The Canucks had their first pre-season game tonight and over 18,000 people showed up! Couldn't find a ticket...to a pre-season game. Crazy
Nah, I'll just change the title....

Three more days until the season openers....
The Pens sent Fleury down to the Baby Penguins, along with 10 others, to finalize the roster... Regardless of what the team will say, it was strictly a financial decision...
Not many other surprises though....
They play their final preseason game tonight in the Igloo against the Caps... Ovechkin put on a show Friday night, including a hat trick and 4 points, against a totally-young Pens lineup... They're using tonight's game as a dress rehearsal, pretty much fully-loading their lineup like it will be Wednesday night in New Joisey....
Here's their probable lineup...
Forwards
Ryan Malone-Mario Lemieux-Ziggy Palffy
John LeClair-Sidney Crosby-Mark Recchi
Matt Murley-Lasse Pirjeta-Konstantin Koltsov
Rico Fata-Maxime Talbot-Ryan VandenBussche
Defense
Josef Melichar-Sergei Gonchar
Dick Tarnstrom-Ric Jackman
Brooks Orpik-Rob Scuderi
Goaltenders
Jocelyn Thibault
Sebastien Caron
After Wednesday, they go down to Raleigh Friday night, where my youngest son and I will be there for the Canes' home opener.... Should be a raucous crowd, including a few thousand Pens fans....
The Pens have their home opener next Saturday against the Bruins...
Game on !!!!!
The Sedin sisters - no more!
They picked apart Edmonton last night. Sedins and anson Carter scoring at will!
If this continues Canucks will walk, that is walk to Cup.
They looked that good. A few breakdowns defensively, but it is better than anyone could have hoped for.
Dave, you could not have said it better..Those two looked bigger,s tronger, and so much more confident and natural around the puck...I do expect big things this year from those two.....

Hey Thorman, this is not a joke or anything and no hidden meaning, other than if you know what it means, I may know of you...
What is "the pauser"?
If you have no clue just say so
As in..." The Canucks have to get Bure out of retirement if they want to win the cup. And one other thing, Mr Burke and the rest of the weenies running Orca Bay should hire me, the Pauser, to be their pro scout cause I have more knowledge of pro hockey then anyone else..."Originally posted by DavidFlamma

Oh yes, is he not still banished to the penalty box?
BAM
The devils are the team to watch

Well, I know WHERE you are from...for a while there I thought you were the pauser (given your rep here):p

So much for that prediction....
One down, 81 to go...
So good to watch a fast, free-flowing hockey game again....
Disappointing result, to say the least... Devils played a good game though....
Brodeur was standing on his frickin' head in the 1st period, the Pens were peppering him and he stopped every one of them...
Combine the afore-mentioned head-standing with some fortunate bounces that went the Devils' way, and you have the 5-1 final...
I felt the Pens' power play was awful sluggish, too much standing around, not enough puck movement.... Had three different 5-on-3's as well....
As for Crosby, I'm really impressed the more I see him play how great a passer he is.... No doubt, this kid will get more than his fair share of points....
Of course, everyone wanted to compare Mario's goal on his 1st shift/1st shot, and if it wasn't for a nice save from Marty on a nifty backhand, Crosby would have had one as well....
And leave it up to the idiotic Jersey fans to chant "overrated" to Crosby in the 3rd period... What a ridiculous thing to say in the kid's 1st NHL game at age 18...
I tell you what, he arguably had the best game for the Pens.... I though Palffy was tight all night and Leclair was mostly non-existent...
Oh well, I've got the Monte Carlo SS in the shop today getting a bunch of shit done for it's 30K checkup, and then it's down to Raleigh tomorrow....
I'd like to believe that you'll see a better result.....
Despite having Crosby play with Lemieux, the Pens are still a financial mess.
But that's for another discussion.
Anyhow, great to see THE COOLEST GAME IN THE WORLD back on!

Actually, they're not anymore Vincenzo...
They've almost sold out the season, and have paid off 100% of their debt...
I'll be up there for the holidays, can't wait until I see Leafs/Pens on Dec. 27th...
Just have to get the new arena secured now...
Marcus Naslund was in late season form last night, with two highlight reel goals.
Bert sent him in on one that is sure to be a common sight. When Bert gets in top shape (he was fighting back problems) it is going to be ridiculous.
They will score like Gretz and co. in the 80's, mark my words. Rule changes are going to work well for Canucks!!!
You sure you guys don't want Alex Stojanov back for Naslund ??
Worst trade in Pens history...
Leafs vs. Pens Dec. 27th? Hmmmmmm sounds like a roadtrip.Originally posted by Va Beach VH Fan

Great game last night in Raleigh for my son and I, although the 3-2 shootout loss wasn't the result we were looking for ....
As usual, about 3,000 or so Pens fan joined the other 16,000 Canes fans for the home opener in Raleigh....
Pretty loud crowd there, always has been...
Had great lower level seats next to the Pens tunnel and made our way right next to there to get closeup views of the Pens as they came out and made their pregame skate.... Malone tossed a puck up to a Pens family with a baby girl right next to us, nice gesture....Appeared that Crosby is really trying to just blend in with the rest of the team....
The Pens spotted the Canes their first goal, with Fata deflecting the puck in the net trying to defend a breakaway...
Stillman scored on a sweet breakaway deke to Caron, didn't look good after 2 periods, 2-0 Canes...
After Malone scored midway in the 3rd period to make it 2-1, several penalties ensued, and the Pens finally tied it with just over a minute to go.... Crosby had a GREAT fake shot/pass to Ziggy for the tap in....
I can't repeat it enough fellas how great a passer and puckhandler Crosby is.... He's not really getting too many scoring opportunities from his teammates at this point though....
They made a couple of changes in the lines... The 1st line was Lemieux-Malone-Koltsov (obviously because of Koltsov's blazing speed), then made the 2nd line Recchi-Crosby-Palffy, which worked great, that line worked very well.... Looks like they temporarily (?) put LeClair on the 3rd line....
The OT was uneventful, then came the shootout.... The Pens brought out Lemieux, Ziggy, and Crosby.....
Before the shootout started, Lemieux stood at center ice by himself, trying to psyche out the rookie goalie... The crowd absolutely ROARED at him, it was really something....
Of course, Mario tried to go top-shelf glove-side, and not 5 hole like he's done a million times before, and gets stopped...
Ziggy had him beat on his backhand, but missed the goal wide....
Crosby tried to go 5-hole, but missed, and since the Canes had already scored in the shootout, the game was over....
The NHL handed out mini Stanley Cups for all NHL home openers (for those who've had theirs already, the Pens' is tonight).... I guess they're not too cheap, nice little trinket I guess....
Oh well, better luck next time.... Hopefully next time I can bring along that bastard that lives in Raleigh...
Thanks, I'll email Moose.Originally posted by Va Beach VH Fan

Yeah, and in Boston the fans pelted the ice with them after a late power play goal put the Canadiens up a goal with about a minute to go...Originally posted by Va Beach VH Fan

I was trying to watch the game tonight (Pens/Bruins) to assess Crosby, but with whistles every 15 seconds or so I couldnt take it anymore...maybe I'll try and catch the end of the 3rd right now...

Well, before season I predicted Maple lafs would go at least 0-14 for their first Saturday night games...
One down, 13 to go!!

As far as Crosby goes, 1st NHL goal and two more great assists.... 2 goals for #66 also, but they lose in OT 7-6....

In this new NHL, any old school defencemen are looking foolish!
If they can't use sticks at all, how can they keep up with speedy forwards??
I am surprised so many teams stuck by their d-men in these cases
What I'm absolutely shocked about so far is how the D-men are petrified to check anyone near the net...
The forwards are basically skating in untouched !!!
I am too.Originally posted by DavidFlamma

St. Louis letting Pronger get away baffles me. I know he made a ton, but he is arguably the best defenseman in the game.
They think these rules will get more fans, I don't see it.

The "offensive" defenseman will be huge ...
Lidstrom, Leech, guys like that ...
looks like things are starting to sort themselves out...
Goalies were getting nailed because d-men couldn't clear out pussy, visor-wearing euros, so league is starting to be a little more lax in applying rules closer to net.
Games are quick, and some I have watched had few whistles and non-stop play.
I still think 2-line pass is bogus. Better to reward teams with extra point for win if they score 5 goals or more. That would end trap without changing fundamental rule of game.
Interesting that rule changes came ONLY after salary cap was implemented, so that teams wouldn't have to shell out raises for higher goal totals
I see the Oilers retired PAUL COFFEY's #7........
STELLAR defenseman.....
First ballot hall-of-famer.......

VA...so is Crosby the real deal? Should I go see him tomorrow night?
They certainly put out some good lines...
But their defense is absolutely blowing goats, and is just killing them... Too many turnovers in their own zone....
And the goaltending hasn't been much better...
I think you're going to see a fired up bunch, they're getting hammered pretty much in the press, especially the Canadian websites...
Now for Crosby, I would not consider it a stretch at all to say that he's been about the 2nd or 3rd most complete player the Pens have had, along with his linemates of Recchi and Palffy...
I'm not exaggerating when I say that he's one of the best passers I've seen, even though he's only 18, when someone isn't all over him that is....
So yeah PA, it should be a good game to go see....
Just realized I didn't mention Lemieux in that post....
...didnt go...feeling under the weather...
Looks like you would have had a good time...
B's looked strong, Pens D sucked again....
And Crosby looked good again....
Canucks keep dominating...A late period 4 minute break down but for the most part they were rock solid...The sisters keep kicking ass
