    Character Win

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=156594&hubname=nhl

CALGARY (CP) - Crippled by an injury-riddled defence and a jet-lagged offence, the Vancouver Canucks showed their resilience Tuesday night.

Markus Naslund and Anson Carter scored second-period goals nine seconds apart to lead the Canucks to a 2-1 win over Calgary, moving Vancouver into a tie with the Flames atop the Northwest Division.

Calgary led 1-0 and seemed to be controlling the play when the complexion of the contest quickly changed.

At 18:20, Steve McCarthy's pass to Brendan Morrison at the Flames blue-line caught Calgary on a line change. Morrison then chipped the puck to Naslund, who broke in alone and fired a high shot past Miikka Kiprusoff.

''Auld (Vancouver goalie Alex Auld) was yelling at me to throw the puck up and I just turned my head before I got it and passed it up to Mo,'' said McCarthy. ''I've certainly been on the other end when you're tired and you're trying to get off the ice.

''It was a great play by Alex to communicate.''

Just nine seconds later, Bryan Allen and Olympic goal medallist Daniel Sedin combined to spring Anton Carter for his 22nd of the year. Carter beat Kiprusoff with a shot from the top of the faceoff circle.

That's all the offence Vancouver needed as Auld stopped 30 shots to improve to 26-16-3.

Vancouver's defence was minus four regulars with Olympic casualties Sami Salo (shoulder) and Mattias Ohlund (ribs) joining Ed Jovanovski (groin) and Nolan Baumgartner (ankle) on the sidelines.

Uh-oh, what's that ? A character win for the Nucks?

Look out. Naslund looked like he was back.

ROLY the Goalie to Edmonton for picks...

    TSN.ca Staff

    3/8/2006 3:08:48 PM

The Edmonton Oilers have a new No. 1 netminder, acquiring Dwayne Roloson from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a first round pick and a conditional draft pick.

The conditional pick is a third rounder if Roloson re-signs with Edmonton.

The Wild were rumoured to be shopping off one of their goalies, and Roloson was the odd man out after the team re-signed Fernandez to a multi-year contract last week.

"I think it means that they think they can win the Cup," Roloson's agent Mark Witkin said from Boston.
    Related Info

The Wild helped the Oilers despite being only seven points behind Edmonton for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Roloson, 36, is 6-17 this season with a 3.00 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. A veteran of 269 games, Roloson played in 162 matches over the course of the past four seasons with the Wild and was a Western Conference All-Star in 2004.

The Recchi deal was huge from the Pens...and they really didn't give up much...

They were selling it here as giving up to much here...

and I was laughing my ass off...

for fucking recchi...who will step right in where Cole was...

and when Cole comes back in the playoffs...

    this Canes team...

    adding Weight and freakin' Recchi...

could be the team to beat...

not mentioning that idiotic game they lost to fucking PHilly on the goal with 2 tenths of a second left...

    fuckers...

I think Pittsburgh did 2 things with that deal...

    1. Made up for Cole...

    and...

    2. Honored the Canes...because Rutherford was knockin' on Recchi's door 2 weeks ago...before Cole got injured...

so I think they made the deal based off those 2 reasons...

    lmfao...which is ridiculous...

and if they go far...let me know...

we COULD...look into getting a ticket package for the playoffs...

and for the games you couldn't make...we could hawk your tix...

    just a thought...

    don't know if I WANT to do it...but like I said...a thought...

It'd be nice if they had a nice first round matchup, like Philly....

Jagr Sets Rangers' Points Record in Win
    Thursday, March 30, 2006 3:08 AM EST
    The Associated Press
    By JOHN NICHOLSON

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Jaromir Jagr broke New York's single-season points record — and gave the Rangers a little cushion in the Atlantic Division race.

Jagr assisted on four straight goals in a 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night to pass Hall of Famer Jean Ratelle on the team scoring list and help the Rangers move four points ahead of second-place Philadelphia.

"It's a big honor for me," Jagr said. "I'm glad I did it in the first period. ... We need the points. We want to stay in first in the division."

Despite his reemergence as one of the league's elite scorers, Jagr plans to retire when his contract expires in two years.

"I'll be 36. I'm going back to Europe," the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Drawing chants of "MVP! MVP!" from the many Rangers fans at Nassau Coliseum, Jagr broke the tie with Ratelle at 7:23 of the first period, setting up Petr Prucha's power-play goal for point No. 110. Jagr also assisted on Martin Straka's three goals.

"We had a lot of chances," Jagr said. "Sometimes it might look easy like tonight and other times it's really tough. That's just hockey."

Jagr, trying to hold off Joe Thornton for his sixth NHL scoring title, is the clear favorite to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, an award he won in 1998-99 with Pittsburgh. Jagr has 113 points in 73 games, seven more than Thornton has in 70 games for Boston and San Jose.

"Without question, he's the MVP," Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro said. "Every time he gets the puck on his stick, he makes a good play. He's tough to defend.

"Them getting in the playoffs is great for hockey. I think the new rules have helped them out considerably. They're a tough team to play against."

Jagr also has an NHL-leading 52 goals, tied with Adam Graves for the team record. The 34-year-old Czech star had a chance to break that tie on a breakaway midway through the third period, but DiPietro stopped him with a pad save.

"It wasn't a good shot," Jagr said. "I thought someone was coming up behind me and rushed it. I'd like to have that one back."

Ratelle had 109 points in 1971-72, and Graves set the goal record in 1993-94.

Henrik Lundqvist also broke the Rangers' record for victories by a rookie, making 18 saves for his 30th win. The Swedish Olympic goalie improved to 30-10-9 to break a tie with Jim Henry (1941-42) and Johnny Bower (1953-54).

"It's a big number for me, especially in my first season," Lundqvist said. "The whole team played a great game."

Blair Betts also scored for the Rangers. Alexei Yashin scored his 25th goal for the Islanders, 10 points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Prucha's goal, the rookie's 29th, opened the scoring at 7:23 of the first period. Straka scored at 8:53 and 13:59 of the first period and completed his hat trick at 12:14 of the second with his 18th goal of the season.

The Rangers, coming off a 5-4 shootout victory over Buffalo on Monday night at Madison Square Garden, will face Eastern Conference-leading Ottawa on Thursday night as they close in on their first playoff spot since 1997.

The Rangers and Flyers are fighting for the Atlantic title, with the winner in position to get the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference and the loser expected to open against Buffalo in the 4-5 series.

DiPietro, also in goal Tuesday night in a 2-0 loss in Montreal, made 17 saves. The Islanders have lost six of their last eight games.

Jagr is 16th on the NHL's career goals list with 589, 22nd in assists with 833 and 14th in points with 1,422 in 1,100 games with Pittsburgh, Washington and New York. In 73 career games against the Islanders, he has 51 goals and 71 assists for 122 points.

"He's a special hockey player," Islanders interim coach Brad Shaw said. "Early in his career, he looked like this. I don't know what happened in a few of his middle years, but certainly this year, he's found the love of the game again. We stood around and watched him make a lot of plays. We gave him too much respect and too much room."

Notes: The games was the sixth of eight games between the team this season. The Rangers have won the last four — the last three at the Coliseum — after losing the first two. ... Jagr extended his points streak to 10 games. He has nine goals and 12 assists during the run. ... The Rangers' Colton Orr and the Islanders' Eric Godard fought in the first period, moments after Godard and Petteri Nokelainen hammered Darius Kasparaitis into the end boards with simultaneous checks. Orr also fought John Erskine in the second. ... The Islanders activated Nokelainen from injured reserve. The 20-year-old Finn, selected 16th overall in the 2004 draft, missed 58 games because of patella tendinitis in his right knee. The Islanders sent center Jeremy Colliton and defenseman Rob Collins to Bridgeport of the AHL.

He's awesome, but we'll see how the big Czeck does in the playoffs though...

Jagr has played well but how about Teamu Selanne?

Comeback player of the year, even better than Jagr, I think.

Jagr pisses me off beacause he is the most talented fucker out there, but after he signed for huge dollars in Washington, he realized he hated it there and sulked.

At least Teamu had major knee surgery as an excuse for a drop-off in production.

Just outstanding year for him and Jagr

Hey Nickd...What's up with the Sabres.

    Losing 7-0 to the Leafs???

I wasn't concerned with their losing streak until this.

Leafs are out of playoff race, but Leaf fans can't let go...it is funny.

Even TSN up here still gives 4 minutes to the doomed Lafs and gives the surging Canucks 30 seconds.

    Some things never change.

Sean Avery of the Kings is a pussy.

He committs the cardinal sin of spraying the goalie with ice and then refuses to answer the bell and a teamate is forced to fight a much bigger player.

Hayward (a former player) calls him out:

    Avery responds

"You're the reason the league doesn't have a national television deal. You're a (terrible) announcer and you were a (terrible) player," Avery said during the exchange.

Hayward responded: "How would you know? When I played, you were in your third year of eighth grade."

    Hilarious.

I really do hate Toronto, but Sundin's 6 points (4 goals, 2 assists) in a 6-5 OT win against Florida is outstanding.

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=162221&hubname=nhl

I hope this inspires Marcus Naslund to a similar feat here.

I actually like many of the Leafs players, and even Pat Quinn. It is just the institution that is the Leafs, along with their annoying, arrogant fans

They'd sure have more credibility in my eyes if they'd won a Cup in the last 40 years.....

Of course, a team from Vancouver hasn't won it since 1915....

Sorry, had to go there !!!

    Yes indeed, 1915....

And as for the Red Wings, sure must be nice playing Chicago, St. Louis, and Columbus 24 times out of 82 games...

At least the Nucks had a sniff...twice, in the past 30 years.

Shit, they were one hyperbaric chamber away from a cup against New York.

Messier guaranteeing a win my ass. He knew the mystical chamber would get "lost" for game 7 in New York.

One of the best Stanley Cup Finals Ever!

Well, the Nucks are out. Alex Auld just wasn't up to the task...going down on every shot.

Doesn't take long for the league to figure out how to beat the backup goalie.

This can only mean one thing...

I am jumping on the Leafs bandwagon.

That's right. Those fuckers are sacking up in the biggest way. I can't believe they have a chance!!

Fucking Leafs for the Cup baby!

    I can't believe what I am saying....Jagermeister be damned, I don't care .

Dont count on Toronto beating Ottawa tomorrow, Ottawa has smoked them everytime they have met this season, the Leafs have played well lately but dont deserve to make the Playoffs anyway, I'm going to be cheering on the Flames to win the cup......

    Excuse me ????????????

I like Sundin, does his business, not a showboat, always have admired him....

And his 6 point night was outstanding....

But have you seen how absolutely POSSESSED Crosby has been in the last two weeks ??

17 points in the last 7 games (it's really 6 games, when he went down with the "lower body injury in Tampa")

Same span for Sundin ?? 14 points....

Sid is at 97 points heading into tonight's game at the Isles....

Will this be the night to hit triple figures ??

Yes, the Pens still have the worst record (by 1 point less than the Blues)....

But there is NO QUESTIONING that the Pens have been one of the most improved teams in the league the last few months....

So one guy has 17 points and another 14 and there is no comparison?

Come on VA, you know how much I hate the Leafs but Sundin has pulled a Jordan-like performance here, willing his team back from the abyss where no one thought they had a chance at the playoffs.

The pressure in Toronto is immense and he has singe-handedley given the Leafs a chance.

Crosby's feats in the last two weeks just don't compare, although I am happy for his recent surge.
Obviously he has had a great year despite his team's performance. I am always rooting for Canadian boys...hope Thornton beats out that prima donna jagr for the scoring title.

Wow, Jordan didn't flash into my mind when I thought of Sundin....

Look at who Sundin is surrounded with as compared to Crosby....

Look at who the linemates Crosby lost over the course of this year, that being Lemieux, Palffy, and Recchi....

His two current linemates (Armstrong and Hilbert) were both on the waiver wire this year !!!

Did you watch any of the Toronto game VA?

Sundin was nothing less than Jordan-like in the way he pulled his team to wins in every game.

He either scored or assisted on every winning goal in this streak.

He was the driving force in every victory.

You cannot compare goals and assists in "garbage-time" to overtime game winners and game tying goals when your team is vying for th e last playoff spot.

Sundin has been playing huge down the stretch in a pressure cooker of an environment.

Antropov and Ponikarovsky superstars???I think not.

If anything, Pitssburgh had what ws thought to be a good lineup compared to the Leafs (don't make me dig up your posts from earlier in the year

I didn't watch the entire game, I watched all of the highlights...

I just can't use a Jordan-like comparison, the only hockey players to deserve that comparison are Gretz, Lemieux, and Orr...

And again, don't get me wrong, he's had a great run...

But you have to admit, Antropov and Poni were nowhere near the waiver wire....

And the Pens didn't have that lineup for very long.... Lemieux retired in December, Palffy in January....

Almost every goal Sundin scored was a slapshot where he just blew it by every goaltender like they were a pee-wee goalie = Jordan-like.

Not to mention being so clutch. 4 goals and 2 assists in a 6-5 OT victory where they HAD to have the win = Amazing.

Sundin blah blah blah, it doesnt matter now.....

The season is a failure -- McCabe

Their season gone to waste, the Maple Leafs last night took full responsibility for their inability to make the playoffs despite an admirable late charge.

"The season is a failure," defenceman Bryan McCabe said. "(The post-season) is what you play for. You only get so many opportunities to play for the Stanley Cup and this is two years in a row down the tubes (including the lockout) and it is not a good feeling.

"We have no one to blame but ourselves. We put ourselves in this spot. You have to do the job in January and February. That is where we let it slip and we are paying for it now."

The Leafs were third in the Northeast Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference on Jan. 10 after a loss to the Canucks in Vancouver. But they lost the next seven and began to fall, though it was not until they lost to the New York Rangers at home on Feb. 11 that they tumbled out of the top eight in the conference.

The late-blooming Leafs mulched their bitter rivals from Ottawa 5-1 last night, but on the dressing room TV, they watched a 3-2 overtime win by the Tampa Bay Lightning over the Carolina Hurricanes, giving the eighth-place Bolts an insurmountable four-point lead over the Leafs.

With two games to play, Toronto can't catch Tampa, which has the tiebreaker on wins. Atlanta remains three points back of Tampa.

"We're pretty sombre," forward Kyle Wellwood said as the Leafs dispersed from the room. "We'd start getting optimistic (during the streak) and then we'd look at the out-of-town scores.

"But when you're undefeated in 10 regulation games (18 of a possible 20 points and the first win in eight tries against the Senators this season), it means something. Guys like Jean-Sebastien Aubin and Matt Stajan have really stepped up."

Darcy Tucker established a career high with his 60th point last night but it meant nothing to the 31-year-old, whose work ethic was matched by some of his teammates only when it became too late.

"You live to play in the playoffs," Tucker said. "There is nothing else that meets those sort of goals in your life. Besides having children and a family there is no other thing in life than winning hockey games in the playoffs. It's like having your heart ripped out."

    SUNDIN OUT FOR WORLDS

Mats Sundin said he will not play for Sweden in the world championship next month, but was not as forthcoming when he said "you're asking the wrong person," when asked what changes with the Leafs should be made this summer.

Like McCabe, Sundin pointed to the struggles in January and February as unacceptable.

"It shouldn't come down to this part of the season to try to make it in," Sundin said. "We should be in a position where we had a playoff spot. I am very proud of the way our team has rallied, (we have) a lot of character. But we started to play like this too late."
