Gerut is fair...nothing more...nothing less...he's not as good as Lawton...similar in a lot of ways...a shitty OF...IMO...
but when he's on...he can be huge...really...really streaky...
Pittsburgh just saved themselves a boatload of money...

There is NO WAY that he can be a worse outfielder than Lawton... I'm not exaggerating, Lawton may be the worst professional outfielder I've ever seen...
And Gerut's been on the Web Gems a handful of times this year....
Offensively, yeah you're probably right, Lawton has the edge... But Gerut has been recovering from a knee injury this year, so let's just hope that he'll pick it up....
And I don't even know if they saved that much money at all.... The deal said Lawton AND CASH for Gerut.... He was only owed about 2 million for the rest of the season...
Well...I can't fathom that they made this deal to shore up their defense...

Gerut is fine...nothing special...he's young...that's more than likely what they were looking for.
Won't command a big contract...and won't get much in arbitration...because of his injury...
He wasn't every going to start in Cleveland (we have good outfielders...but nothing special)...and couldn't stick in Chicago...who's OF is pretty atroucious...
so...he's fine.
But like I said...this deal was a strict age deal...I thought money...but obviously...because of what you said...it's not...
Nothing really exciting happened at the deadline, at least last yr there was a 4 team trade, this year was just pitiful.

He is, without a doubt, BOTH the worst outfielder and worst baserunner I've ever seen....
I lost count how many times a ball has dropped in front of him after a lackadaisical effort...
And he's either been picked off, or overran a base, or got thrown out due to not running hard at least 10 times this year....
I'm not saying this because he's gone now... Like I said, he was a guy making almost 8 million and is a free agent at the end of the year..
So considering all of that, I don't think this deal is all that bad.... It's not up to the level of Ramirez for a bucket of popcorn a couple of years back....

1. I watched Lawton daily with the Indians...and he was far from the worst outfielder they even had at the time...and he made at least 4 or 5 wall catches that I can remember from his time there. Perhaps he's ham and egging it for your buccos because of their well...ham and eggness...
2. I know you've seen Manny Ramirez play...and if you come back and say he's worse than Manny...in any of what you said there...then the statement of who argues with who...is a moot point...
do I consider 28 young? I wouldn't mind being 28...and considering Lawton is about to turn 34...yeah...in that deal...I'd consider it young....
again...if you keep making "not to bad" trades...to go along with all the free agents you lose or have to deal because you can't afford them...
you end up with mediocrity...or worse...the Pirates...

What Lawton ultimately gives you...is a guy who has an OBP of nearly .400...a good lead off hitter...at least that was out there...and someone who can ADEQUATELY play the outfield.
I respect your thoughts on his horrific defense...and will even give you that...
but you gotta listen to yourself...you just put the guy in Manny proportions...and he's not even Manny ballpark...
But Gerut can play all 3 positions in the outfield...and has a good arm...
nothing spectacular...but certainly solid...
