Three Team Mega Trade Hits Snag

A proposed three-team deal involving the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Devil Rays "hit a roadblock" Friday night, according to a baseball official familiar with the discussions, and now appears unlikely to happen at all.

The deal proposed would have sent unhappy Boston slugger Manny Ramirez and Tampa Bay closer Danys Baez to the Mets, with the Red Sox acquiring outfielder/designated hitter Aubrey Huff and outfielder Mike Cameron, and the Devil Rays getting two prospects apiece from the Mets and Red Sox.

But with a 4 p.m. ET deadline looming Sunday, it could be too late to finish the blockbuster on time. An executive with one of the three teams said late Friday night that the teams have now decided if they can't get the deal patched back together by about noon Saturday, they will have no choice but to move on.

"If there are any complications involving Manny's contract, or any financial ramifications [such as luxury tax or deferral issues], that would require the approval of the commissioner's office," the executive said. "So this is not the kind of deal you can do at 3:59 p.m. Sunday."

Given that deadline, the executive said, "it's looking like it's not going to happen. Time's just running out. At some point it just becomes too late."

A source said the Red Sox felt they could not go ahead with trading Ramirez and two prime prospects -- reportedly catcher Kelly Shoppach and right-hander Anibal Sanchez -- if all they were receiving was New York's Cameron and Tampa Bay's Huff. So they went back to the Mets "for more pieces," the source reported. At that point, the Mets "squashed the whole thing" and talks broke off.

A baseball man with knowledge of the discussions said the Red Sox asked the Mets for a "key player," whom the Mets felt they couldn't trade.

An official of another club that spoke with the Mets on Friday night said the Mets also had reservations about going ahead with the deal because they would have had to assume all $64 million of Ramirez's contract, and that would have put them both over budget and over the luxury-tax threshold.

What's uncertain now is whether the deal can be revived, or even whether any portion of it can be revived. The Mets had been talking separately to the Devil Rays about Baez, and the Red Sox had been talking with Tampa Bay about Huff. Then on Friday afternoon, the teams made an attempt to connect the two trades. The Devil Rays were described by sources as being ecstatic about the prospects they would have received -- the Mets were prepared to include right-hander Yusmeiro Petit and outfielder Lastings Milledge -- so they're expected to keep pressing the Mets and Red Sox to put the pieces back together.

An official with one team who spoke with the Red Sox on Friday said Boston had gotten inquiries from at least two other teams about trading for Ramirez -- but that any attempt to rev up talks with those clubs Saturday would run into the same time constraints.

So barring something miraculous, it appears Ramirez will still be with the Red Sox come next week -- and for the rest of the year.

"We tried," said a frustrated official from one of the three clubs involved in the negotiations. "It just didn't work."

Mets prospect Milledge key piece to trade puzzle

    By Jayson Stark

    ESPN.com

The proposed three-team trade involving the Red Sox, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- with Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez at the heart of it -- is still alive and still being discussed, baseball sources said Saturday.

The proposal took on a different look late Friday into Saturday, however.

The Red Sox would acquire Mets outfielder Mike Cameron and pitcher Aaron Heilman, and Devil Rays outfielder/designated hitter Aubrey Huff; the Mets would get Ramirez, reliever Danys Baez and shortstop Julio Lugo; and the Devil Rays would still get four prospects, but the prospects are being reconsidered.

An official with one of the three teams told ESPN.com that the Mets never walked away from the deal Friday night over money. Rather, it was over their reluctance to let go of Lastings Milledge, one of their top prospects. Saturday, however, the Mets have softened on that stance.

If Milledge is still included in the current proposal, Red Sox prospect Hanley Ramirez gets thrown into the mix. Milledge would potentially go to the Red Sox, and Ramirez would get shipped to Tampa Bay.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays have talked to the Red Sox as well and made an "inquisitive call" about Manny Ramirez, sources said.

Late Friday, the Red Sox, Mets and Devil Rays had decided that if they couldn't get a deal patched by noon Saturday, they would have no choice but to move on, an executive with one of the teams said late Friday night. Major League Baseball's trade deadline is 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.

"If there are any complications involving Manny's contract, or any financial ramifications [such as luxury tax or deferral issues, they] would require the approval of the commissioner's office," the executive said. "So this is not the kind of deal you can do at 3:59 p.m. Sunday."

Given that deadline, the executive said, "it's looking like it's not going to happen. Time's just running out. At some point it just becomes too late."

According to a baseball official familiar with the discussions, the proposed trade "hit a roadblock" late Friday.

In addition to the initial proposal of Ramirez and Baez being sent to the Mets, the Red Sox would acquire Huff and Cameron, and the Devil Rays receiving two prospects apiece from New York and Boston.

But a source said the Red Sox felt they could not go ahead with trading Ramirez and two prime prospects -- reportedly catcher Kelly Shoppach and right-hander Anibal Sanchez -- if all they were receiving was Cameron and Huff. So they went back to the Mets "for more pieces," the source reported.

At that point, the Mets "squashed the whole thing" and talks broke off. A baseball man with knowledge of the discussions said the Red Sox asked the Mets for a "key player," whom the Mets felt they couldn't trade. It is believed that Milledge was this player.

An official of another club that spoke with the Mets on Friday night said the Mets also had reservations about going ahead with the deal because they would have had to assume all $64 million of Ramirez's contract, and that would have put them both over budget and over the luxury-tax threshold.

I'd read that earlier today...and not sure what I think about it...

Boston sure as fuck would be losing a boatload with Manny...and I don't think Huff and fucking Cameron come close to matching it...

D-Rays reportedly cause snag in Manny trade

The three-team deal that would send Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez to the Mets has hit a major snag, according to a report posted by the Boston Globe on its Web site Saturday afternoon.

    Trade tracker: Deadline deals
    Soriano on Cubs' wish list
    Worst trades in history

The third team involved with the blockbuster trade, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, have demanded that top Red Sox prospect Hanley Ramirez be included in the trade, said the report which got its information from major league sources.

The report went on to say the demand for Hanley Ramirez was a deal breaker, and unless the Devil Rays have a change of heart, it would appear that the deal is dead.

Under the terms of the proposed deal, according to the Globe, the Red Sox would have received outfielder Mike Cameron, pitcher Aaron Heilman, and outfield prospect Lastings Milledge from the Mets, and infielder/outfielder Aubrey Huff from the Devil Rays.

But according to major league sources, the Devil Rays, who on Friday were prepared to accept a package of prospects that included Double-A pitcher Anibal Sanchez from the Red Sox, insisted Saturday on Hanley Ramirez, and the Red Sox turned it down.

Manny Ramirez and Devil Rays closer Danys Baez would have gone to the Mets in the deal, according to the report.

The Red Sox and Devil Rays could resume talks about a straight two-way deal for Huff, who would give the Red Sox a left-handed bat to replace the injured Trot Nixon, the report said. Huff, however, is due in excess of $6.75 million next season, which could be too expensive for Boston's liking.

The Devil Rays were insisting that Boston trade both its top offensive prospect, Hanley Ramirez, and its top pitching prospect, Jon Lester, to the Rays in order to finish off the deal. The Red Sox, however, couldn't convince themselves to trade their two best prospects and their 150-RBI cleanup man in one massive transaction.

But Tampa Bay held firm. So by game time Saturday night, the Red Sox and Mets had decided to remove the Devil Rays from the equation and see if it was possible to pull this off as just a New York-Boston shuttle flight.

No...can't blame them for trying...but they HAVE to make moves to get better...and you can't go out and expect a team to dump their top 2 prospects...AND arguably their bets player...with only Huff and Cemeron in return...

Moving manny's contract seems like something they've been trying to do for a couple seasons now anyway, but they shouldn't settle for anything but value for him.

    There's no way you can...

there are maybe 2 others who year in and year out are as good offensively...

    Pujols...and maybe Cabrera...

Seems like too big a move to the team and like Ortiz said ... how do you replace a guy like that ... at least during a down the stretch playoff run.

The off season would be better ... but the Mets are trying to win also ... the timing doesnt see right, but I know Manny runs his mouth, etc.

Yeah...but I was listening to the radio...EsPn today...and they brought up a good point...

    Manny rarely thinks...

and the great thing about it is that he feels no pressure because of it...a game in April is just as important as a game in October...

which is why he's always so good in the playoffs...

Cleveland got fucked over by those fuckers...

lol ... no doubt ... wasn't worried about any market but his own when Boston rung up $140 million.

A lot of athletes win the big one ... and then it's all out the window ... all that matters is themselves and the coin.

I know they always matter, but like in football too ... win the big one, get paid, get fat, and it's done.

He'll have a good year next year, a lot like Pedro, something to prove one more time, but then what.

With Ramirez gone it affects Ortiz too...because if you used to walk Ortiz you get to Manny, now you can just walk him no big deal. And Ramirez doesen't run his mouth as much as Pedro Martinez...the Yankees are my daddy...who would say that dumbfuck comment about anyone?

I know Ortiz isn't happy about it all, and is down on the fans for booing Manny.

All should have been handled after the season.

Yeah, and this shit will get to his head and he won't focus on killing the ball. I would keep Manny, he may complain and shit but he kills the ball, and thats his job. Except this crap when he won't play, or wont try as much, that pisses me the hell of he gets paid 60 mil and just cause they cant trade him they make all of the fans suffer. That's low. I was piiiissed when i saw him not go after that fly ball.

Big Rumor that Minnesota has put together a major deal to acquire Soriano from Texas...and...

I'm hearing that perhaps...all the major players are getting together for a big time deal...more on that in a second...

I just have a fucking feeling that Manny is going to the Mets today...

Omar is feeling the heat to do something...

and with the new TV deal next year...they need as many stars as possible...

Soriano would be huge in Minny ... in that park. His offensive numbers would be even better IMO.

Here's what they are saying on ESPN as we speak...

Soriano for Lohse, Boone and Liriano (their top pitching prospect)...but they are hedging on Liriano...

Everyone is saying that Manny is staying...including Manny...

I still think the Mets are going to make another push to get him...

Deals crop up out of nowhere sometimes. The deadline does that to teams.

Gotta love the anticipation of the possibility of a big deal going down.

The funny thing about it is that we may not know about a big deal until 8:00 or so...

I think if you get a deal in to the league office by 4:00...you can have a few hours to get the particulars finalized...

I remember one year that the Indians got Jeff Juden from the Expos...the deadline passed...I was up until the 2:00 Sportscenter before they made an announcement (when the old deadline was midnight)....

Both the Rangers and the Sox have officially said that these two aren't going anywhere...

36 minutes to go...we'll see...I'm moving to the other thread though...

I'm surprised Huff and Baez haven't moved...

I think Baez at the least will end up somewhere else...
