Powell to Kerry: Back up your claim with names of foreign leaders
By Jennifer C. Kerr, Associated Press, 3/14/2004 22:30

WASHINGTON (AP) Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday challenged Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry to name the foreign leaders whom the Massachusetts senator claims want him as the next U.S. president.

Kerry, the all-but-certain Democratic presidential nominee, said at a fund-raiser last week in Florida that he's heard from some world leaders who quietly back his candidacy and hope he defeats President Bush in November.

Powell expressed skepticism on ''Fox News Sunday'' when asked about Kerry's assertion.

''I don't know what foreign leaders Senator Kerry is talking about. It's an easy charge, an easy assertion to make. But if he feels it is that important an assertion to make, he ought to list some names,'' Powell said. ''If he can't list names, then perhaps he should find something else to talk about.''

Pressed on the issue on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania, Kerry refused to name any leaders who back his campaign, saying he won't violate the confidence of those who spoke to him privately.

''No leader would obviously share a conversation if I started listing them,'' said Kerry. ''The point is that all across the world, America is meeting with a new level of hostility.''

''There are relationships that have been broken,'' Kerry said at a town hall meeting. ''I have heard from foreign leaders elsewhere in the world who don't appreciate the Bush administration and would love to see a change in the leadership of the United States.''

He also wouldn't say at what level he had spoken with officials. ''I'm not going to play that game,'' said Kerry, who said private conversations should stay that way.

''I don't think Colin Powell or the president would start listing the names of those who said something critical,'' said Kerry. ''I think the people of the United States understand that we have lost some of the good will that we had extended to us immediately after Sept. 11.''

Powell also said it was ''just absurd'' for Kerry to have suggested that the administration held up for political purposes announcement of an agreement with Libya to rid itself of weapons of mass destruction.

''That took time to bring that deal together and I've been following it very, very closely for a number of months,'' Powell said. ''And when finally the United States and the United Kingdom negotiators got a deal with Libya, we acted on that deal and we announced that deal. It was not held up for any campaign or political purpose.''

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, meanwhile, said on CBS' ''Face the Nation'' that the president has told Powell and him not to get involved in the re-election campaign.

''He thinks that it's best if his secretary of state and his secretary of defense tend to their responsibilities and not allow their departments to become enmeshed in the campaign,'' Rumsfeld said.

''It's obviously difficult if those issues become prominent and we have to discuss those issues, but we will be doing it in a manner that is not campaign-style at all,'' Rumsfeld said.

This sounds like "I know a secret you don't know".........
But my question is that if he had no intention of giving up the names of the World Leaders making such statements, why even bring it up?

The man is notorious for saying things and not backing it up with facts of any sort.
Powell was right when he said that he needs to find something else to talk about.
Just mentioning his "Private" conversation was a breach of confidentiality if you ask me.

Like he didn't know people would want to know who these Leaders are?
C'mon, it just doesn't wash with me but i'm sure the Liberal voter has no issue taking the flip flopper at his word......it would be a different word tomorrow anyway if it were politically advantageous...

To quote President Bush: "John Kerry has been in Washington just long enough to take both sides on every issue" I loved that line...

If Kerry were to name such foreign leaders, odds are their countries would be suddenly attacked by "Al Qaeda", in an attempt to "persuade" them that only PNAC can protect them from Harvey Bin Laden the 6 foot invisible terrorist Easter Bunny.

If Kerry were to name such foreign leaders, he would be taken to the woodshed by such leaders for lying.

You have spin for everything, this we all know...

So, what Kerry is actually doing is protecting these "Leaders" according to you?
Well, don't you think he would have been better served to just not say anything about these so called "Foreign Supporters" ?

How can you support a party that makes numerous claims about anything and everything under the sun and never have anything to back up those claims?

Kerry is already altering his statement as of last night when a man challenged him on this issue.
Oh but the ever socialist, immoral Liberal's will just ignore that as well.

    Unbelievable

    Who you gonna vote for?

    LOL @ horse faced ass

Besides, i didn't call you a Kerry supporter i asked how you can support that party.
I'm assuming that just because he is the Dems boy he will get the support if they like him or not. This race is about power to the left and i'm sure they could care less who it is as long as the White House can be delivered as the prize.

Well, you're half right. A lot of the so called "left" were decieved into believing that Kerry was "the only one who can beat Bush". But the ones in charge of the party aren't "left" by any means. They are the Republican infiltrators of the DLC, whose mission is destruction of the Democratic party from within. And given our losses in 1994 and 2002, and the "loss" that was really a win in 2000 (which never should have been close enough to steal), it's obvious that they are doing their job all too well.

The question is not "can Kerry beat Bush", but "will it make a damn bit of difference if he does".

On Supreme Court issues, perhaps. On environmental policy, hopefully.

But when it comes to the fascist imperialistic policies of PNAC, the guys behind Kerry are no different than the ones backing Junior

We need more options in Presidential Elections i do believe. All of them must be equally funded also.
I would also like to see a Blue Coller type of guy have a shot at the Presidency actually.

I'm getting sick and tired of rich guys getting the chance and then speaking about the rich as if they aren't part of that group. we need realistic leadership in this country as opposed to what we have now on both sides of the isle.

In other words, it's time to shake it up a bit...

And ironically enough, there was one such candidate from your own state, and look how far he got. Shit, the guy used to live in his fucking CAR! Can't get much more humble than that.

    Kucinich?

Humble he may be but he's also sort of whacko on his policies. his idea of immediate troop withdrawl from Iraq scared me to death, lol.

I really would like our troops to come home but they need to finish their work first.
Personally, I am sick and tired of this whole Iraq mess.

I'm just sick and tired of what has happened to our society over the last 10 years........Its hard to really care anymore, about anything.

It's also amazing at how quickly he embraced the "Republican wing of the Democratic party" (the DNC and Kerry).
