Does anyone know if Ed had to use a special amp or other equipment to get that trippy sound of Cathedral?

it's a delay, isn't it?
Writing In All Proper Case Takes Extra Time, Is Confusing To Read, And Is Completely Pointless.
No it's called Cathedral because he recorded it in a cathedral.
That's why it sounds all echoey and stuff.
Cheers!
n' stuff...
If Ed was in a Cathedral when he recorded Cathedral then what was Ed doing when he recorded Spanish Fly? Hmmmmm......
Diamond Mafia Forever - 4. To restore fullbug to the prominent place in this board, after various serious attacks by hitch1969 have now damaged his reputation and now is reguarded as a "Retarded, Stoned, Canadian, Dog finger bangin' fuckup"
It was a Lexicon PCM 70, used for "Cathedral," a pair of Roland SDE3000 Digital Delays and an Eventide H3000 Harmonizer.
"If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”
I can play Cathedral using a super chorus boss pedal, digital delay. also if fucking around without having to resort to using the same old brown sound I will hook up my mt zone distortion pedal, last in the chain leading into the amp. Keep in mind that Ed never really dicked around with distortion too much. you can alot out of an overdrive, flanger and chorus pedal.
"FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKIN' BITCH! WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE ANYWAYS? TALK TO ME LIKE THAT? FUCK YOU. DRAG QUEEN LOOKIN' WHORE- YOU AINT SHIT. YOUR THE FRECKLE TO THE LEFT OF MY BROWN EYE. NOW GO MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL...OH, PUT DAD ON THE PHONE"
Hey, what is the definition of brown sound anyways? NEVER said I was a guitar player.
The Savicki mind never stops wondering about things............
...livin in the online VH world for 19 years....thanks to a 2 year old.....
brown sound is toned down without any distortion. no feedback. clean strings, but deeper. Perfect example. Listen to Running with the Devil. Then listen to Summer Nights. Devil is brown sound.
When Sammy joined the group in '85, Eddie was forced to tune up and kill alot of that "brown sound" to compensate for Hagar's higher un-steady voice. Or some would have you believe that Eddie played the brown sound to clean up Daves voice. (but trust me Eddie added to Daves already nice voice, like the two songs from BOV1, he toned back down again) So basically Brown is in pedal effect terms would be, Flangers, Octaves,Chrous's and Delays. Then the proper amps with good gain control and voila. If I missed anything to you other players out there feel free to add some info.
Didn't Ed also use the solenoidal disback capacitor charge on the outboard flocktag? Yea, that's it...
Big Troubles, that is a great answer. Even though I don't know shit about playing, I understood what you said.
My question is, how are "Brown Sound" and "Harmonics" related, if at all?
Well it all depends on the sound your going for. Harmonics and Brown could be defined the same by one person or to someone else it could be the difference between the opening of Hear about it Later (harmonics) and Unchained (brown). I think most ppl would tell you that harmonics have small places in songs. Beginnings, middles and ends. Maybe a lead or two. And with Ed VH, he did a masterful job of blending all those sounds to keep us talking about it almost 30 years later. Kinda cool when you think about it. But easily answered is when talking about Brown Sound, you talk classic VH. Add a distortion pedal or two and you've got your self, Motely Crue, Ratt or Cinderella. (blech!)
