Was he beaten as a kid ? Did Papa VH beat him and Shemp with whiskey bottles ? What could possibly have happened to this guy other than believing all the hype of "Greatest guitarist since Hendrix"

Think his primary demon is a lazy attitude coupled with booze. As to the cause, probably too mcuh success and too many people telling him he was the most bitching guitarist ever.

He started drinking at an early age. They only thing he really knows how to do is play guitar.
He is an innovator on guitar. Changed the way people play. Not used to dealing with praise.

He then thought whatever was named Van Halen would sell like virgins in a whorehouse. ANd when they didnt he began to drink heavier and rely in pitty, self-pity, lack of empathy, and manipulation to RE-gain comtrol.

I agree,but it was quite pathetic of them to talk shit about Dave.
They made it their campaign to slag Dave, and for the squeeling poodle to yap off along with them is absolutely pathetic !

this is also why he worked well with Roth but hated him too

nevertheless it's interesting that both ed and his sister alexis were/are heavy alcoholics. sammy gave an interview where he gave a little insight of what things were up to in howdy dowdy mountain...ed getting arrested for fighting with val and cutting his hair off so piss drunk that val wouldn't let him in the house and on some other occasion getting called to bring alexis to some clinic, because of his drunkness...
both must have their demons and it seems to be in the family...

The Pasadena Area used to have a Dutch community. Jan and Eugena Van Halen moved to Pasadena from Holland because relatives there sold them on the wonderfulness of Southern California. I think Jan was hoping to get some work playing sax and clarinet for movie soundtracks and being a gun for hire for studio work. Unfortunately Jan's instrument of choice was out of date and he mostly gigged in small bands and worked as a janitor. Mrs. Van Halen raised the kids and cleaned houses.
I have talked to sevral people who knew the Van Halens and frankly everyone said Jan Van Halen was the nicest guy you could ever meet. Friendly and funny. Eugena was more reserved but I never heard anything bad about her.
I guess their house was so small you had to pass through Eddie and Alex's bedroom to get to the bathroom. One person who was friends of the family told me the Van Halens would always fix you something to eat when you visited with them. They also remember going through the boys bedroom to take a leak and there was a very cool guitar laying on Ed's bed that was made to look like the VH logo.
Valerie Bertinelli was married to Eddie for 23 years and even she says she doesn't understand why Ed continues to hurt himself.
Who knows, the Van Halens made a wonderful living doing what they loved. How many people get that chance? They pissed it all away. They pissed every relationship they had with people who cared about them away. They pissed their fanbase away. All I can say is Edward Van Halen should be the posterchild for LOSER!

I dunno. Alcoholism, to me, isn't so much a disease as it is a sign of self-indulgence. Therefore, Ed's continual battle with the bottle (presuming he is even trying to stop drinking) just comes off like an example of a self-centered asshole when coupled with his own press statements.
But I'm not making a claim that I have a deep understanding of psychology/psychiatry. I'm not Tom Cruise. Who really knows what Ed's thought process is? I don't know the guy, and a lot of my opinions on this stem from my OWN self-centered interest of seeing Ed back in action with Dave, so it's easy to take Ed's actions as proof that he'd be better off with Roth in the band. The presumtion being that if Ed IS gonna be continually drunk and miserable, he may as well be doing it while undertaking a CVH reunion.

alcoholism-or more precisely addiction- is a disease and the most devastating thing about the disease is not the way in which it manifests itself; i.e. drugs, alcohol, gambling etc. nor in the effect it has on the person inflicted (its something they have done to themselves) but in the toll it takes on the innocent lives that are always involved. In this case, us fans.
Further, on the alcoholism and Ed coming off as a self centered asshole bit of it all-I think thats where it gets a bit tricky. What we have seen has been enough to make Ed many well deserved enemies...But DAVE doesn't seem to share in the hatred of him...and even though he and Val divorced... they were together a long, long, time by any standards... and... well... how to put it? There are many people who know much about it that could and should be slinging shit, but ain't and my guess is there is a reason.
I am not going to get into excusing Ed's behaviour, or even in trying to rationalize it, but simply want to point out... the only thing the majority of us know is what we see... but there is much the majority of us did not see! Things are not always as they seem.

I think it's out of place to suggest one knows the about Eddie and Alex's childhood.
What seems obvious to me is Eddie and Alex made a concerted effort afterthe band broke up in 85 to slag Dave.
For 20 years, it's been what an asshole he is, how untalented Dave is - yet, Dave has not been part of their lives.
Both those guys are TERRIFIED of the legacy of the primary thing that will be remembered about them when they die - which was their combined efforts with David Lee Roth. They will all be remembered as ONE entity. DLR is comfortable with it and long ago accepted this...in fact, he has embraced it and pays tribute to the legacy, and thus, in part, himself. Eddie and Alex go out of their way to try to destroy and ignore...and deny their own past.
The lyrics to Me Wise Magic pretty much say it all:

"Who are you and where are we?"
So you have 20 years of denial, insecurity, guilt over demonstrising DLR and their own classic VH legacy, and the drinking. Every time Eddie has uttered "anybody can sing these songs", it has built upon the foundation of HATE and jealousy (that DLR was such a great vocalist and songwiter and that NOT just anybdy can sing the songs and write great rock lyrics).
All and all, it's not good.
